shopping 4 car alarm
I'd never buy an alarm through ebay unless I didn't care about the money. They're way too finicky to not have a dependable and recognized dealer back up. Not to mention you might as well install it yourself because 1. most shops won't install alarms they don't sell and 2. if they do, they're probably not going to warranty anything.

the only finicky alarm is the one you hook up wrong, aside from a factory defect, a good name brand alarm like dei will be just fine, also buying from a seller with good ratings and alot of sales will help if the unit is defective, the seller will most likely have their own return policy. If it's a unit that can be bought at pepboys for like $50 on sale then I agree, I wouldn't waste money on ebay for that type of unit.
as far as installing it yourself, that is exactly what I do with my alarms and what I reccommend to anyone else that they do. Learn how to do it yourself or get a friend that is an electronics wiz to help. with the problems that the so called "professionals" have caused to my car and alarms in the past, I wouldn't let an install shop change my fuses much less mess with my alarm system. Most alarm shops have some punk kid that is more worried about his algebra final than installing your alarm acurately, I'd rather take the time to do it myself the right way.
oh and the "dependable and recognized dealer" does not exist, there is no such thing as a dependable dealer, bestbuy, circuit city, car stereo shop, brandon city stereo, and least of all fuck off....I mean BUZZ off, just to name a few.

Im with John on this one. Not to mention, when you buy online, you lose a lifetime warranty and them covering your deductible if your car does end up getting stolen. Plus, sorry to say it, kender you might know what your doing as far as installing, but theres almost no way a first-timer would do a better install job then an experienced shop. Yes, good shops do exist, I know you probably had a bad experience, but theyre out there. There are certain things that are only learned from experience.
Ive done 3 ebay/online 791's. One had the siren output randomly go bad 6 months down the road, for no reason at all. Shit does happen, and for someone who doesnt know what theyre doing, its not the best route. Just my two cents.
