If memory serves me, from back in my electrical product days, there are actually heat conducting powder coats, which might even help heat issues, by giving more volume and surface area to the heat sink (albeit not much).

And powder coating the amp a color other than black might actually help, especially if the amp is installed in a hatch, or somehere else where it gets hit by the sun.

Back in the late 80's, guys were into custom painting their amps (base coat clea coat style)...many amps of that day, like PPI, came painted, as well. I can't remember any problems with overheating.

Might not be as good as anodized aluminum, but I wouldn't expect much of a problem in most cases.

Nice work, by the way.

I just thought it was an interesting coincidence that you posted a thread like "hey look at this cool idea" and then also happen to have an advertisement for your powder coating company in your sig. Which by the way, is againast TR rules as well. Just a heads up.

Im pretty sure it was anodized which is a mineral material the is absorbed into the aluminum, not affecting the heat transfer ablity of the metal. Almost all amp heatsinks are anodized, some are painted (cheap) but no heatsinks are powder coated from the factory.

I have moved out of state and left the powder industry for the most part. I may open a job shop up here in the future but not sure as of now.

Like I said, not knockin the work, looks great, and I dont see any problem with that amp, but just warning others with "high heat producing" amps what MIGHT happen.......

Like I said, shouldnt be a problem with amp......

Just a warning for people with amps that produce alot of heat.

Hey Toby

Actually, powder coatings are very good insulators and heat barriers. Some are even used to insulate electrical components and wiring. I even helped develop a low temp curing, high barrier wire coating for GE a few years ago that is going to be used in a military guidence system.

I personally wouldnt coat any type of heatsink, as it technically defeats its purpose, but it could be look at on a case to case basis.....
