Question Wire size question

Ok so i think there might be something with the wiring of my subs that makes it burn out my amps. I went to the12volt.com and got a wiring diagram for a dual 1 ohm sub, but it didnt tell me what wiring to use. I think there was 16 gauge wiring (in the box) before, but what would be the difference if i used 8 or 10 gauge. Is there any pros or cons at using a thicker wire?

Subs: FI BTL 12'' Dual 1 ohm
Amp: Soundstream DTR1.3400 1/2 ohm stable
