$2013 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge
$2013 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge
Based on the number of posts on here lately I feel like I might be making a private entry into my personal car journal, but here goes.
Tod and I took out our $2013 Challenge car this past weekend to the PCA Endurocross. (Yes, we stole the endurocross idea from FAST. Sue us, Half of the PCA members are lawyers. Kidding, of course, About the sue us part.
The car is a 1994 Mustang 5.0, 5 speed nicknamed Ka-Bluey. Luckily she did not go Ka-Bluey this past weekend, since gas was pouring out of the filler neck and someone told us they saw sparks coming out from underneath. We shook it off. You gotta be tough to drive a Mustang.
Anyway, our raw time was second to Danny Shields in his Boxster R. We were happy with the time for our first test drive, but we have work to do. We are going to fall mid-pack at The Big Show if we can't best a Boxster on Bridgestones.
Good news: 1) Nothing important broke, 2) Danny said the car did not have any bad traits that needed addressing, and 3) We have until mid November to get her done.
Bad News: 1) It fell off the front of the trailer on the way to the event because Tod let the Polish guy tie it down (so clearly Tod's fault), and 2) we have a long "to do" list.
Wish us luck.
Mark
(Hey, did anyone see our photo with the TR7 in the current issue of GRM? Page 36? We apologize for not being better looking. Sorry.)

We took the Mustang out again on 9-15 to Full Throttle Speedway for a second round of testing. Tod took a mid-day FTD, but we had Danny take her out during the last session, and he went even faster. I did not check the times carefully but I think the car took FTD by close to 2 seconds. I do know that Danny did a 43.6 in his Boxster S, and a 41.5 in our Mustang. So we are feeling good. He still wants us to play with the tire pressures, shock settings, and the alignment, but we are getting closer.
I was pretty scared before we put down the new times. We need to do well against street cars if we want to have a decent showing at the $2013 Challenge. One more work session at Tod's to make some adjustments (and add Nitrous oxide for the drag portion), then we'll go for another test drive.

Sunday (10-13-13) was our last planned test day at a PCA autocross in St. Pete. Tod took FTD with a 29.9xx. Next in line was Danny Shields in his Boxster S on Rs with a 31.0xx. So the Mustang is faster than a B-Stock Boxster. We can live with that.
We should have place some bets before the day started with some of the Porsche guys. I have a hunch the guy with the 911 turbo with the carbon fiber hood would have bet us out of pride.
Question: How loud do you have to be before the neighbors at St. Pete call the cops?
Answer: Approximately One 5 litre Mustang.
One more planned work day before the big show on November 15th.
Crossing my finger we don't break anything.
