[h=2]Jeff Gordon to drive Daytona 500 pace car[/h] Friday, 24 February 2017

Three-time Daytona 500 winner and four-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champ Jeff Gordon will lead the field to the start of Sunday's Daytona 500 behind the wheel of the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 pace car.

"Chevrolet and I have a great history at the Daytona 500 and it's an honor to drive the 650-horsepower Camaro ZL1 pace car for the largest, most historic race of the season," Gordon said.
A month removed from claiming overall victory with Wayne Taylor Racing at this same track in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Gordon called said the honor is "taken to a whole other level."

"I remember years ago, I think it was 2005 when I last won this race, Mathew McConaughey was the pace car driver, or was an honorary starter here. To me, you go down the list of prestigious things I have done, this is right at the top of the list. Very, very cool. Yes, it is going to be unique because not only am I going to be doing the job I am supposed to do pacing the field, there is a responsibility as well because the drivers rely on that pace car and that speed to get their pit road speed accurately. Also, I will be interacting with Mike (Joy) and DW (Darrell Waltrip) up in the booth and the broadcast to get the Daytona 500 started off right."
It will be a particularly unique experience considering the Rainbow Warrior will be pacing a front row filled by his former car, now driven by two-time Daytona polesitter Chase Elliott, and former teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.
"Driving for Hendrick Motorsports for 23 years as a driver, to be able to lead this field in a Chevrolet Camaro but also have two Chevrolets in my rearview mirror, that makes it even more special," Gordon said.
"[Chase's] pole was exciting, but seeing what he did in the Duel last night, that was incredible. I think when you talk to Chase I think that there has been a little bit of hesitancy and doubt of what he is doing on a restrictor plate track. He gained a lot of knowledge and experience last year and now it is paying off. He is a quick study. We have seen him do this in other races. He learns very, very fast.
"What he did last night was one of the most impressive things I have seen him do yet. To see him be able to go from last year and unsure of what he was capable of doing on a restrictor plate track, to taking control of that race last night. Making some bold moves."

Gordon won't defend Rolex 24 win

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

One big name in, one big name out.
Of all the things retired NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon has planned for 2018, returning to defend his overall win with Wayne Taylor Racing at the Rolex 24 At Daytona is not on the list. With Gordon's absence, Fernando Alonso should have no competition for No. 1 status in the autograph session.
Having stood atop the podium with Ricky and Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli in January after capturing the victory in WTR's Cadillac DPi-V.R, the four-time Cup title winner says he's chosen to cherish the memory and ride into the Rolex 24 sunset.
"I mean, who doesn't want to go out on top!" Gordon told RACER. "I plan on watching the event – not competing in it. I'll be pulling for Jordan Taylor and Wayne Taylor Racing, and I'm excited to see how Ricky does with Penske's new team."

Gordon retired from competing NASCAR at the end of 2015, only to return later in 2016 to sub for the injured Dale Earnhardt Jr. Along with his new career with FOX as a broadcaster, Gordon took another shot at the Rolex 24 after finishing third on his endurance racing debut in 2005.

The fairy tale result for Gordon with WTR, which also saw team veteran Angelelli hang up his helmet on a high note, will stand as a transition point for the team on its return to Daytona in January.
Taylor's son Ricky recently moved to Acura Team Penske as teammate to Helio Castroneves and Graham Rahal, and with Angelelli and Gordon out of the frame, WTR will have at least two and possibly three seats to fill for IMSA's WeatherTech SportsCar Championship opener in Florida.

Ryan Hunter-Reay, who drove for WTR at Petit Le Mans, is rumored to be the team's endurance driver next year, which would take one seat out of the discussion. The team is also working to identify Ricky's full-time replacement, and a number of drivers are said to be under consideration. Although WTR normally utilizes three drivers for Daytona, and made an exception with the addition of Gordon, it's unclear whether the factory Cadillac program would seek a fourth driver for the Jan. 25-28 event.

Jeff Gordon Interview with Joe Buck

the 4 second lead:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=jh4jO8r0BQk

NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon is the subject of this week's episode of Undeniable with Joe Buck, which airs on DIRECTV's AUDIENCE Network. During the hour-long interview, Gordon discusses a variety of topics from his career on the track.
The four-time NASCAR Cup Series champ turned Fox Sports analyst says in the interview that during his driving career, his Hendrick Motorsports team argued with him to make the races closer because it was better for the sport of NASCAR, but he didn't care how exciting the races were as long as he won. After a while, he was convinced to keeping the races within four seconds, so it would be more interesting for the fans watching on TV and at the track:

Gordon on Earnhardt Interview with Joe Buck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=iA4c62Qw8Xo

Later in the interview, Gordon discusses another one of NASCAR's all-time greats, Dale Earnhardt. Gordon says he looked up to and respected Earnhardt, and always enjoyed racing and learning from him. Earnhardt always worried him because he had his own stance on the level of comfort he wanted in the car and, as a result, he wasn't necessarily as safe as the other drivers:

Gordon getting noticed by Rick Hendrick Interview with Joe Buck

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=YfIRfikmuts

Gordon tells Buck about how owner Rick Hendrick discovered him after he winning a race in Atlanta. While watching the race, Hendrick saw the way Gordon was driving and told his friends he wanted to stay for the end of the race because he knew Gordon was going to wreck. However, Gordon didn't wreck and ultimately won the race. It was this performance that made drove Hendrick to wanting Gordon on his team:

Gordon admits nerves before Hall of Fame announcement

Image by Getty Images for NASCAR
28 sharessharetweetemail
By: Kelly Crandall May 24, 2018 10:22 AM Jeff Gordon tried to play it cool about the possibility of being elected to the 2019 NASCAR Hall of Fame class despite it seemingly being a forgone conclusion.“You never know until they announce it,” said Gordon. “I was trying not to get my hopes up or get too caught up into all of it.”The four-time champion might not have been a unanimous selection, but he did receive the highest percentage of votes in Hall of Fame history. Gordon was selected by 96 percent of the voters. He watched the announcement while at the Fox Sports studios in Charlotte, the base of what has been his new job the last few years, with his family.“When you hear your name, I had different feelings,” Gordon said. “I wasn’t that nervous until it got to that moment. Then it was like, man, this is very special. When you’re surrounded by your family, especially my mom and dad, they sacrificed everything to get me into racing. I can just see the look in their eyes of how proud they are because of the role they played, how they’ve seen me since I was just a kid be passionate about racing. I think sort of disbelief for all of us that it’s led to this.“All that I’ve accomplished, the things that I’ve been able to experience, people I’ve worked with, people I’ve met, then now to get into the Hall of Fame is kind of surreal. I feel it was just yesterday I was driving a racecar, so it’s very surreal but a huge honor.”Following his name, Gordon was excited to hear the next four nominees, and he was excited for each one. And he also thought about his connection to each one in some way.Gordon raced against Roger Penske and Jack Roush teams. When Gordon debuted in the Cup Series in 1992 at Atlanta, it was the same race where Alan Kulwicki won the championship. Davey Allison was somebody “special” to Gordon, and someone to whom he looked up.Following a brief career in what is now the Xfinity Series, Gordon moved to Cup racing full-time with Hendrick Motorsports in 1993. By 1995 he was a champion, only to add two more in ’97 and ’98. Gordon won races everywhere and often, triumphing in the sport’s biggest races while helping transcend it off the track.Notoriety came quickly, and by 2003 he went mainstream, becoming the first –and so far, only — NASCAR driver to host “Saturday Night Live.” He’s also invested much of his personal time into charity and other causes away from the track through the years. When Gordon hung up the helmet on his full-time career after 2015, he had won four championships and 93 races. And with his Hall of Fame selection, he will join the only car owner he’s ever driven for, Rick Hendrick, and a crew chief he found most of his success with, Ray Evernham. That all three of those key pieces are now in the Hall of Fame says a lot about what Hendrick created with his organization, said Gordon.“The people. Then when Ray and I came to work for Rich, Ray told me that all the resources are there, that this could be something really special,” he recounted. “Obviously, it ended up being way more than we ever anticipated.“Those two are like family to me. To be able to follow them in is very, very, very special to me. They’re obviously extremely deserving. I wouldn’t be sitting here if it weren’t for those two. Besides my parents, I owe those two everything, how they contributed to my life in more than just racing. But especially racing, when you look at the success we had on the track.”

Jeff Gordon 1985 Year in Review

Published on Feb 3, 2018
Watch Jeff Gordon's rookie year in the All Star Circuit of Champions during 'Jeff Gordon 1985 Year in Review' When Jeff Gordon was racing QMA and karts his family would also attend sprint car races as spectators at West Capital Speedway and Vallejo Speedway near his home in Vallejo. Jeff at the age of 13 liked reading Open Wheel magazine and in one of the

issues he saw an article about a 14 year old named Sport Allen who was racing sprint cars in Florida. John Bickford, upon hearing about Allen then contacted Lee Osborne from Jamestown, IN who built sprint cars. Lee, reluctant at first because of Jeff's young age, finally sent John an Osborne chassis to Vallejo where John and Jeff built it from the ground up.

The engine was built by Earl Gaerte of Rochester, IN. John spent $25,000 on the car getting ready for 1985. In February 1985 John took Jeff to Jax Raceways in Jacksonville, FL for the first part of the All Star Circuit of Champions Speedweek. At Jax they learned the ropes from Butch Smith who was a championship sprint car owner. Lee had contacted Butch who

advised him to be on the lookout for John and Jeff and to help them with chassis setups. During John and Jeff's arrival at Speedweek officials did not want Jeff to race because he was 13 years old. John persuaded the officials by creating a waiver saying if anything happened to Jeff on the track it would release them of all legal liability, reminded them that they had

no age limit and that Jeff would start in the back of races no matter where he qualified. Jeff in his first race started at the rear of the field and in the first lap lost control hitting the wall causing minor damage to his sprint car. Right after that it started raining bringing the caution out and the rest of the race was cancelled. Later in the week John and Jeff finished out

Speedweek with the second part of it being the Winternationals at East Bay Speedway in Tampa, FL. Jeff in his second attempt at a sprint car race, qualified on the second row in his first Heat Race. Jeff in the #16X car made it to the B Main and finished 18th out of 54 for the entire event earning his first ever paycheck which was $300. During the Winternationals

Jeff was also labeled the youngest sprint car driver in the world. Over the next few weeks ESPN ran a short profile about Jeff on TV during their Speedweeks program (
). Over the next month, Jeff tried to compete in other sprint car races back home in California because he was in school all week there, but tracks would not let him saying he had to be either 16

or 18 to race. In March Jeff was allowed only to practice, not race later in the night, at events at Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA. Tracks in California continued to refuse Jeff because of his age which limited his racing for the first part of 1985. At soon as Jeff finished the school year and the summer came, John took Jeff to Ohio where there were the most tracks in

one regional area which had the least age restrictions. Dave Heitmeyer of H&M Motor Sales, a used car dealer in Finlay, OH, had seen Jeff race in Florida. Heitmeyer offered two rooms out of his nearby home for John and Jeff to stay upon them coming to Ohio for the summer. Heitmeyer was also a track announcer at Millstream Motor Speedway in Findlay.

Heitmeyer during the summer often helped John and Jeff at tracks and sometimes even drove their sprint car trailer for them. In turn, Jeff's sprint car sometimes displayed a H&M Motor Sales sponsorship along with MPD Racing, John's racing parts business in Vallejo. Jim Streicher, who owned a print shop in Findlay and had a son named Mike that raced in

USAC (United States Auto Club), provided a building for John and Jeff to store and work on the sprint car. On June 16th Jeff won his first Heat Race at Millstream. During another race he slid off the track into the fans' parking lot. When Millstream discovered Jeff was only 13 years old, they told him he could not return until he was 16. Later in June Jeff won his first B

Main at K-C Raceway in Waverly, OH. In another race at K-C he flipped. During the summer Jeff raced in 22 events at tracks such as Fremont, Springfield, Tri-City and Vermilion County Speedway along with finishing 2nd in an A Main at K-C and Bloomington Speedway. When asked about his life goals, his answer is that he would like to win the Indianapolis
