Kahne snaps drought with Brickyard 400 win
Sunday, 23 July 2017
By RACER Staff / Image by Matthew Thacker/LAT
Kasey Kahne got an overtime do-over with daylight almost gone, and his jump on Brad Keselowski helped him end an agonizing 102-race winless streak and win a wild Brickyard 400 that saw a record number of cautions.
After Jimmie Johnson's crash – amid a three-wide run into Turn 3 with Keselowski and Kahne – brought out a caution with two laps to go, Kahne was leading and Keselowski second on the first overtime attempt, with Kahne choosing the outside lane in a reverse strategy call from an earlier restart. But Kahne appeared to hold back before the restart zone while Keselowski's lane pushed forward, and it led to an almost immediate caution and red flag when Michael McDowell pushed Trevor Bayne too far and triggered an eight-car crash that blocked the track.
But on the second attempt – with Keselowski taking the outside lane to avoid Speedy Dry – Kahne pulled in front of Keselowski and held through the first two corners, and he was leading at the line when Denny Hamlin hit the wall and triggered a three-car wreck behind them on the backstretch.
"The [restart] before, it just didn't work, everything went wrong," an exhausted Kahne told NBC Sports. "The final one everything went right. And once I got into Turn 1 I had good power and was able to clear him."
It's the first win for Kahne since a victory at Atlanta on Aug. 31, 2014, and the first win for Kahne's crew chief Keith Rodden. Kahne's victory is the 10th Brickyard 400 win for Hendrick Motorsports, who won five with Jeff Gordon and four with Jimmie Johnson, who was one of multiple cars to wreck hard in Sunday's race when he crashed. It also once again kept Roger Penske from his first Brickyard win.
Amid speculation about his future in the No. 5, Kahne said the win meant more in a career sense, although "to win at this track is unreal.
"It feels good to win, you know?" he said. "For all these people that work so hard, it feels good to get into Victory Lane and show that we can do it if things go our way.”
Keselowski finished second, followed by Ryan Newman, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth.
“Kasey, he did a heck of a job today, he drove a hell of a race," Keselowski said. "I was happy for him but of course I wanted it for my team. I thought I was in the right spot. You’d seen all day where you get somebody on your outside in the corner and they got real loose, but he drove in there and just…stuck. I don’t know, probably got the wrong lane there, made the wrong call. The double-file restarts, everyone was on edge there and then some, and I guess I just guessed wrong on the last one.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s hopes of winning in his final visit to the Brickyard were dashed when he ran into the back of Trevor Bayne in a stackup on lap 76. Earnhardt's car began smoking with apparent radiator damage and his day was done.
Kyle Busch was denied his third straight Brickyard win when a side-by-side battle for the lead with Martin Truex Jr. on a restart ended in a major crash on lap 112 crash. Truex got loose and collected Busch, who had swept the first two stages.

Keselowski rues lane choice on final restart
Sunday, 23 July 2017
By Kelly Crandall / Images by Nigel Kinrade/LAT
Brad Keselowski could taste the yard of bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway before a final restart wiped it away.
The leader of the race coming to a second overtime attempt, Keselowski had his choice of lane for the restart. He took the outside, leaving Kasey Kahne on the bottom. It proved to be the wrong choice as Kahne powered by and cleared the overtime line when the final caution flew down the backstretch.
"I felt like I hit it pretty well. Just Kasey, it stuck," Keselowski said of the restart. "He drove through the oil dry. He didn't just drive through it, he drove it in there, and it stuck. You know, lots of credit to him for getting it to stick. It was impressive.
"I didn't feel like I could do that if I was on the bottom lane. Maybe I could have, I don't know. You never know 'til you're in that spot."
With Keselowski coming up short, the driver is now 0-8 at Indianapolis and team owner Roger Penske, the most accomplished IndyCar team owner at the track, has still not won a NASCAR Cup Series race there.
The No. 2 having a shot at the win was a testament to how hard the team fought. Even as he battled late in the race, Keselowski wasn't happy with how his Ford was handling, saying it wasn't dialed in but crew chief Paul Wolfe and company made it better with every pit stop.
"We just have to take our result and move on," Keselowski said. "We weren't the fastest car today, but our team did a hell of a job executing. I wish I could have executed a little bit better to bring home the win. I'm not sure what that would have took.
"But all in all, good to have a top finish at this track. I think our best finish coming to this race here was ninth. Kind of checked this one off as at least getting a top finish."
There was also a little bit of humor to it.
"I was thinking as I was walking over here (to the media center) about watching a race here with Kasey a few years ago where he was probably going to win it, and a restart at the end he got passed in the same way we did here today," Keselowski said. "I was thinking about that, and thinking, 'You know, I guess if we run up front and do what we did today, then we'll (one day) get a victory like Kasey did.'"

[h=2]Hendrick signs Byron to replace Kahne[/h] Wednesday, 09 August 2017
By Kelly Crandall / Images by Brett Moist/LAT & Russ LaBounty/LAT
Hendrick Motorsports made it official Wednesday, announcing that William Byron will drive its No. 5 Chevrolet beginning next season. Byron, 19, will replace Kasey Kahne.
The new comes a year after Hendrick signed Byron, snatching him away from the Toyota Racing camp. Sponsorship for Byron next season will come from Liberty University, where Byron is currently enrolled, and Axalta Coating Systems, two companies currently supporting him in the Xfinity Series.
The Daytona 500 will mark Byron's Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series debut. He will compete for Rookie of the Year honors.
"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Byron in a team release. "Mr. (Rick) Hendrick has built such a great team. The people at Hendrick Motorsports have dedicated their lives to giving their drivers the best chance to win every weekend. I have a responsibility to them to work hard and put everything I have into this opportunity. They need to know I'm always giving 100 percent, because that's what they do."
Midway through his first Xfinity Series season, Byron has earned three wins (Iowa, Daytona, and Indianapolis) and is looking at being the number one seed in the playoffs. He also leads the Rookie of the Year standings. Last year, Byron competed full-time in the Camping World Truck Series where he won seven races in addition to being named the top rookie.
"When I told my parents that I wanted to drive racecars, they supported me and believed I could do it," continued Byron. "Without them, there's no way this would be possible. Axalta and Liberty University are awesome partners, and I'm so thankful for their faith in me. I'm going to do all I can to make my family, my sponsors and my teammates proud and represent them all in the right way."
Byron will be teammates with seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, Chase Elliott, and Alex Bowman.
"At every step, William has proven how quickly he can adapt," said team owner Rick Hendrick. "Some drivers have raw talent and some have a strong work ethic. William has both. It's impressive to see a young guy who never gets rattled and instinctively knows how to communicate with his team. That level of commitment, poise and pure ability is rare at any age. I think he's just scratching the surface."

Hendrick takes responsibility for Kahne's struggles
Wednesday, 09 August 2017
By Kelly Crandall / Images by Nigel Kinrade/LAT & John Harrelson/LAT
Rick Hendrick admitted Wednesday it was time for a fresh start in the No. 5 camp.
Change comes in the form of William Byron, the 19-year-old who will replace NASCAR veteran Kasey Kahne beginning next season. Byron will move up from the Xfinity Series to take over the ride, even though Kahne still had another year on his contract.
However, the performance of the group has simply not been where it should have been the last few seasons. And so when asked if the driver change would be taking place had Kahne run better, Hendrick (pictured at right, above, with Kahne) pointed fingers only at himself.
"I have to take responsibility for that," Hendrick said on a media teleconference announcing Byron's future. "For whatever reason, we have not performed and I take the blame myself. We just haven't gotten the job done like we should, and so sometimes when you have those kinds of situations you have to change something up to get a fresh start."
Kahne joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2012 and immediately won two races. Yet that has been the only season, to date, Kahne has finished in the top 10 in points with Hendrick. While he's gone on to win four more races – including the Brickyard 400 last month to lock himself into the playoffs – Kahne failed to make a post-season appearance in 2015 and 2016.
Through 22 races this season, Kahne has just four top-10 finishes.
"I take responsibility for that," Hendrick reiterated. "I'm not blaming anybody – crew chief or drivers. For whatever reason, we weren't hitting it."
Even with the driver change, Hendrick revealed he will still be paying Kahne next season. And without going into details, Hendrick said he is also helping Kahne "in another situation that we could be involved with in helping another team."

Mack joins Leavine as Kahne's crew chief

Leavine Family Racing has finalized its driver and crew chief lineup for the 2018 season.
Announced Tuesday morning, Travis Mack, who is the current car chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Hendrick Motorsports, will join the organization as the crew chief for incoming driver Kasey Kahne.
Kahne was announced as the next driver of the No. 95 Chevrolet last month.
Mack, who has been the car chief of the No. 88 since 2015, has been a member of the Hendrick family since 2004 and got a taste of being a crew chief when he served as Earnhardt's interim leader at Richmond Raceway seven weeks ago.
"As crew chief, Travis brings leadership and a solid experience to Leavine Family Racing," said Jeremy Lange, vice president and general manager of LFR. "His passion for racing and desire to win will fit well in our organization and, collectively, we are all looking forward to 2018 and beyond."
A former shock specialist and mechanic, Mack is the latest in a long line of Hendrick Motorsports employees who have worked themselves into a crew chief position.
Greg Ives was a race engineer for Jimmie Johnson before being tasked with leading Earnhardt's team after the departure of Steve Letarte. And Letarte held down many roles at HMS before becoming a crew chief, such as mechanic, car chief and tire specialist.
Kahne's former crew chief, Keith Rodden, was a Hendrick mechanic. There's also Kevin Meendering, who moved to the Xfinity Series as a crew chief for JR Motorsports after being the lead engineer for Earnhardt's Cup team.
The 34-year-old Mack is a native of Louisville, Kentucky.

CRANDALL: How do you measure Kahne's legacy?
“Kasey is a really tough competitor, and drove the car hard, and gave it 100 percent all the time,” former crew chief Kenny Francis said. “He was one of the good guys in the sport; one of the nicest guys around. I hope everybody knows and understands he’s such a good guy, down to earth, as good a person you’d ever want to meet. For all the wins and success, and all the tough times we’ve been through, he’s just a
great guy.”Kahne announced his intention to retire in August. While acknowledging he had not been as competitive as he desired over the last few years, Kahne also spoke of wanting to spend more time with his family. Tanner, Kahne’s son, turned three in October.Except, Kahne didn’t get to finish the season. Lingering dehydration issues reappeared on Labor Day weekend, and the effects forced Kahne out of his car.
He tried to earn medical clearance to return for the final few races by testing at Charlotte Motor Speedway, but to no avail. Kahne ran 25 of 36 races in his last year.“I was surprised, but not surprised,” Ray Evernham said of Kahne’s retirement. “I knew he wasn’t totally happy with everything that was going on; I know how much he cares about family and his other forms of racing. In some ways, I’m really sad because I’ve
always thought Kasey had way more potential than we were able to realize with him, both myself and Mr. Hendrick.“I’m [also] happy for him. It takes a lot of guts to stand up and follow your heart and walk away from something everybody tells you [that] you should be doing to do something that you want to do. I really admire him for that.”For a driver who came into the sport with a bang, Kahne went out without even a
whimper – hardly a thought on the final weekend of the year. Ask about him though, and there is plenty to unpack about Kahne’s career, character, and NASCAR legacy. The Evernham EraKahne’s Cup career started with a lawsuit. After two seasons of competing in what is now the Xfinity Series driving a Ford, Kahne was snatched up by Dodge owner Evernham going into 2004. He inherited the No. 9 from Bill
Elliott, prompting Ford to sue him for what it viewed as a breach of contract for switching manufacturers. The courts dismissed the claims.Although winless in his first season, Kahne did grab Rookie of the Year honors by finishing 13th in the overall standings with an impressive 13 top-10 finishes. It didn’t take long for one question to dominate headlines: When will he win?“The cars of that era suited him,
with the crazy bodies and the offset and the way the aero worked,” Evernham said. “I think when Kasey came in, those cars may have suited him more than they suit the other guys, and he was fast. We won a bunch of races; we should have won more races with him. It was his time.”Kahne finished second five times in 2004, and then once more in 2005 before claiming his first win. Starting from the pole at Richmond
Raceway, Kahne was dominant, leading 242 laps on his way to victory at the Chevy American Revolution 400.“When he first got here, he was very shy,” said Tommy Baldwin, who was Kahne’s crew chief in 2004-05. “He was new at it, so he didn’t know really what to expect – he just got in the thing and drove the wheels off it. We were fortunate enough in the beginning [that] we were fast 90 percent of the places we went
to.“Unbelievable talent… It was fun. It was fun showing up knowing you were one of the cars to beat, and then having all the tools.” Kyle Busch, who entered the series in 2005, remembers Kahne’s early years.“Kasey was a fierce competitor in the Evernham days,” he said. “I remember the No.9 Dodge every week going on the racetrack and being fast, and all of us chasing them and wondering what they had going
on.”Beginning with the final race of the ’05 season, Kahne was paired with Kenny Francis, beginning a partnership that lasted through all but five races between then and 2014. The duo exploded with success in 2006, winning six races and finishing eighth in points – at the time, a career-best for Kahne.
Francis and Kahne had 10 points-paying wins and a victory in the 2008 All-Star Race – an event he’d earned his entry into via a fan vote. His popularity wasn’t a surprise, for as successful as Kahne was on track, his blue eyes and boyish good looks captured plenty of female attention off it, prompting sponsors like Allstate to take advantage with comedic commercials.
Kasey the Kind Kahne’s story cannot be told
without acknowledging his reputation. A recurring theme that appeared when Kahne’s name was mentioned across the paddock is that he was one of the good guys.Elliott Sadler was Kahne’s teammate when Sadler arrived at Evernham in 2006, and remembers how welcoming Kahne was even though “that was his team.” At 31, Sadler was becoming a journeyman driver in the series while Kahne, then 26, was
becoming a face of the sport. The two were teammates from 2006-10, which included tumultuous transitions into Gillette Evernham Motorsports, and then Richard Petty Motorsports. Sadler and Kahne became such good friends away from the track the two eventually built houses next to each other.“Funniest thing about Kasey, he’s like a light switch,” Sadler said. “He was so caring and funny and kind of quiet
sometimes, but he’d get a little courage going every once in a while, and get pretty loud, and he was always a good guy to be around if you’re having a beer somewhere. But when we were at the racetrack, he knew how to flip a switch, and he was a fierce competitor. You could tell how focused he was, especially when he and Kenny Francis were together. … Wanted to win. Took it very hard when he didn’t, or didn’t run
as good as he thinks he should.“Really good guy. I told him the other day, I liked him as a teammate, but I loved him as a neighbor. If we had bad days on Sunday, we were OK by Monday night. We had already gotten back to loving life in a good way and keeping each other cheered up.”
Busch was one of many to wish Kahne well while also saying he enjoyed competing against him.“I’m sure we’ve battled for wins here and there on both the Xfinity side and the Cup side,” Busch said. “We’ve also battled for 15th-place finishes and ended up crashing each other a few times. But he’s always been a respected competitor, and one that everybody respects out there on the racetrack.“You tend to try to not
get into him, but you do make mistakes, we’ve all done that, and I’ve done [it] with Kasey. Most notably a couple years ago, when I think it was three times we ran into him and crashed every time. Certainly, I’m sure, he probably feels like he’s still behind on that of getting me back, but overall, it’s been fun over the years.”Jimmie Johnson also spoke highly of his battles with Kahne over the years. The seven-time champion
went as far as to say Kahne, while driving for Evernham, made him a better driver.“My strong tracks were also his strong tracks – Charlotte is the first one that comes to mind,” Johnson said. “We had some awesome duels. Along my journey of becoming a multi-time champion, he’s one of the guys that’s helped me dig deeper and find more within myself. He’s been a great friend. I certainly just want the best for him. It’s
great to see him as a father. The friendship side, that piece is probably what I will hold onto the most. But, along the way, he did make dig deeper than I’ve dug before, and make me stronger.”Given the amount of time they spent working together, Kahne and Francis naturally became friends as well.
Francis described their relationship, built on mutual respect, as “good as friends can be.” When the two recently saw each other, Francis told Kahne that everything he [Francis] has is because of him.

In order to preserve some of my most anticipated projects, I decided why not knock out a video that should’ve been produced 6 months ago. Ever since his retirement announcement, I’ve wanted to make a video on Kasey Kahne. The question I asked myself, however, was what could I talk about? Now while he’s underachieved on the racetrack, I don’t consider Kasey Kahne a Misfortunate Legacy. Some of the instances of mediocrity were more on the team, and there isn’t a compelling failure I can pin onto the Washington driver. Instead, we are going to go over the downfall and the decline in performance of Kasey Kahne. After all, he was considered one of NASCAR’s most promising stars, right alongside Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards during the mid 2000s. There’s a lot of material to go over, so its time for today’s featured presentation. Music provided by Royalty Free Music
