Pearn's gamble pays off for Truex

By: Kelly Crandall June 24, 2018 4:20 PM Cole Pearn was praised after crafting the perfect strategy to get driver Martin Truex Jr. to Victory Lane Sunday afternoon.Pearn came over the radio and repeatedly told his driver to pit with just under 40 laps to go. Then at the last minute, Truex, who was running second, stayed out while leader Kevin Harvick ducked down pit road.

When things eventually cycled through, Truex overcame a six-second deficit on his fresher tires to retake the lead. He would then drive to Victory Lane for the third time this year.“We’re not that smart, he probably screwed up,” Pearn said before later admitting Truex indeed thought they were pitting until Pearn called him off at the last minute.“I was telling him to pit and he probably thought he was pitting. At the end of the day it worked out and we’re sitting in Victory Lane, so it’s good.”Truex made just one pit stop in the final stage, that coming with 30 laps to go. After being passed for the lead, Harvick came back down pit road to get fresh tires in case of a late-race caution. The race went green through the final stage.“We knew we were going to do one stop. That was kind of our plan,” said Pearn. “We just — we really needed them to pit earlier for it to work out. It was a bit of a gamble obviously, but obviously it paid off and worked out great. It’s tough. Everybody is so good in this it sometimes takes something different to mix it up to pull one out.”Rodney Childers, Harvick’s crew chief, went to victory lane to congratulate the Furniture Row Racing team. According to Pearn, he and Childers often congratulate each other on their success.

The defending series champion Truex is fifth in the point standings with 18 playoff points. Harvick leads the way with 26, and Kyle Busch has 25. With three wins, Truex now has the third-most wins in the series behind Harvick (5) and Busch (4).

So the front guy dives into the pits for tires.

second place stays out.

15 second pit stop before first place guy can get back on the track while second place guy is doing 200mph for 15 seconds.

The guy who went to the pits can now go faster on new tires, but being 15 seconds behind, the race is not long enough to catch up to the lead car.

Brilliant.

Normally,
Pressure is on front car. 2nd place stays out, you stay out.
You are in front, you will stay in front. If 2nd car goes in, he falls behind.

If 2nd place goes in, you go in......IF IF IF there is enough time left that he would have caught you on fresh tires.

To sucker the first place car into the pits,
2nd place has to make it look convincing and when the first car has committed to go in, 2nd place stays out.
The worst that happens is that the first car slows, and NOW 2nd car stands a good chance of catching first place car.

And yes, if I can hear them over the radio, the opposition team can also hear.
There is a small lag time from when you can hear it, before you can call it in to your pit.

But Harvick brushed it off, as his team finished second to Martin Truex Jr. and Furniture Row Racing after being snookered on pit strategy.Harvick replied that they “gave her hell. That’s all that matters. Always want to win, but stuff happens.”Childers had Harvick come down pit road with 38 laps to go. Truex inherited the lead and pitted with 30 laps to go. He then caught Harvick from six seconds back to retake the lead and win the race.

Before this turn of events, Harvick and Truex had been on the same pit cycle and had traded the lead back and forth.“I don’t really know what’s going on up on the pit box and who is doing what. I just do what I’m told,” said Harvick. “Those guys do a great job. You make some right ones, you make some bad ones, and sometimes you guess right, and sometimes you guess wrong. Who knows what is right or wrong.“I thought that was a good call at the end to put tires on in case the caution came out. We got right back up to where we were running and put ourselves in position to have a chance in case the caution came out. I’m really proud of everyone on our Mobil 1 Ford. We had a really good weekend and came up one spot short.” Childers knew his team might be in trouble, admitting the 78 faked them out and “kinda screwed us a little bit.”After losing the lead, Harvick came back down pit road for fresh tires with less than 20 laps to go. He finished over 10 seconds behind Truex after leading 35 laps. Overall, though, there were no hard feelings.

“What we did last time won us the race, but when we got done with the race we didn’t feel like it was the right thing to do,” Childers told reporters at Sonoma, including ESPN’s Bob Pockrass. “We kind of told ourselves going into the race that we’re going to do it differently … and I don’t know. “We just needed to worry about ourselves and not worry about what other people are doing.”
