The entry list for the fifth Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Daytona presented by IMSA, November 13 – 17, at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) was officially announced today by HSR officials, and the 2019 edition the Classic 24-Hour race at the “World Center of Racing” is on track to be the biggest running of the race to date.

Currently showing over 300 drivers in more than 175 entries from 15 different countries, the list includes an impressive collection of past and current champion drivers, sports car racing legends, motorsports notables, rare and priceless historic sports cars and much more.

To see the 2019 HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA entry list, please click here.

Confirmed motorsports stars, legends, champions and notables include Derek Bell, Ray Evernham, Jochen Mass, Andy Wallace, Joao Barbosa, Marco Werner, John Morton, Carlos de Quesada, Eric Curran, Jim Pace, Billy Johnson, Justin Bell, Todd Holbert, Andy Pilgrim, Jim Pla, Aaron Scott, James Davison, Gunnar Jeannette, Butch Leitzinger, Daniel Morad, Bill Warner, Forest Barber, Doug Smith, Dieter Quester, James Gue, Eric Foss, Kees Nierop, Luca Riccitelli, Rod Emory, Scooter Gabel, Al Bacon and more.

One entry certain to steal the spotlight is the legendary Holbert Racing No. 14 Lowenbrau Special Porsche 962 HR1 (pictured above and below), entered by Kevin Jeannette and Gunnar Racing, that will be co-driven by car owner Rodrigo Sales, Derek Bell, Justin Bell and Gunnar Jeannette.

Holbert Racing built chassis HR1 at the team race shop in Warrington, Pennsylvania and debuted the 962 midway through the 1985 season. The car won 10 races in IMSA competition, including the 1985 season finale at Daytona with Holbert and Al Unser Jr. co-driving.

The HR1 returns to Daytona for its second Classic 24-Hour race appearance but the first with Derek Bell on the driver lineup. Bell is a three-time winner of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, with the first pair of wins back-to-back victories with Holbert and Unser in 1986 and 1987 in an earlier No. 14 Lowenbrau Special Porsche 962. Bell made 20 career starts in 24- hour races at Daytona, beginning in 1971 when he co-drove a Wyer/Gulf Porsche 917K with Jo Siffert. His last appearance was in 2003, co-driving a Jim Derhaag Corvette with his son Justin, who had the fastest lap in qualifying.

Both Bells have won sports car racing world titles. Derek earned back-to-back World Sportscar Championships in 1985 and 1986, and Justin captured the 1997 FIA GT2 Championship before winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans GT2 class in 1998.

Car owner Sales has been an emerging talent in both IMSA and World Challenge GT4 and Touring Car competition in recent years, with Gunnar Jeannette among his co-drivers.

Kevin Jeannette’s son – and the namesake of his father’s long-running Gunnar Racing team – Gunnar is an accomplished professional driver in his own right. His titles include the 2011 IMSA Le Mans Prototype Challenge (LMPC) “PC” championship and a Petit Le Mans GT Daytona (GTD) class victory with WeatherTech Racing in 2018.

The 2019 Classic Daytona presented by IMSA will be the first running of the race with a reformatted and expanded Run Group structure. The major change is the division of the original Group E into two distinct classes, each featuring modern but retired prototypes and GT race cars from this century.

Run Group E remains a showcase of such iconic machines as the Audi R8 LMP, Pescarolo Judd LMP, Peugeot 908 HDi FAP and Lola B07 LMP race cars that compete in the group with Daytona Prototype International (DPi), LMP2 race cars and others just past their prime.

Always an HSR Classic Daytona highlight, Group E is bolstered this year with a trio of Pescarolo Judd entries determined to beat three-time and defending winners Rogers Motorsports and its 2005 No. 38 Audi R8 LMP and co-drivers Andy Wallace, Doug Smith and James Gue.

The Pescarolo contingent includes the debuting 2011 No. 99 ERA Motorsport entry of Jamie Constable from Great Britain (pictured above). Two 2007 Pescarolos have also been entered from GMT Racing for Juan Gonzalez and Butch Leitzinger in the ex-Rollcentre Racing No. 18 and a similar Judd-powered No. 16 entry for Randy Johnson and Nick Boulle. Gonzalez and Leitzinger co-drove the No. 18 Pescarolo to a Run Group win in the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour in 2017 and now want an HSR Classic Daytona victory to go with it.

The Group E split paves the way for Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge (LMPC) “PC” cars and Gen 2 and Gen 3 Daytona Prototypes “DP” machines to compete for overall division honors for the first time in a completely restructured Run Group F. The competitor response has been strong, with nearly 15 “PC” and “DP” cars currently entered.

Group A – 1962 – 1972: The oldest and perhaps most memory-stirring division, Group A features legendary and early FIA-era prototype and GT machines that raced in international and world championship competition. The group has attracted race cars such as the Lola T70 and T165, Ford GT40 and several Chevron B8 and B16 models. Production-based cars of the era include an AC Cobra, Shelby Daytona Coupe, Shelby GT350, BRE Datsun 240Z and a strong lineup of early Camaros, Corvettes and Porsche 911s. Two entries of note are a pair of 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupes (pictured upper left below) from the Germany-based HK-Engineering team. Sports car racing legend Jochen Mass co-drives one of the classic Mercedes along with teammates Hans Kleissl and the sister-car duo of Christian Jager and Guido Haarmann.

Group B – 1973 – 1982: Evoking the same emotion and memories of Group A with a little more turbocharged power and wide-body aerodynamics, Group B has attracted Porsche 935s and other Porsche 911-based models, BMW CSLs and some big-bore Camaros and Corvettes. Group B is also home to several ultra-quick and classic sports prototypes including a half-dozen Chevron B19, B26 and B36 models, a March 75 S and Toj SC204. A Group B highlight is the return of the big-block Classic Automotive 1979 No. 88 Greenwood Corvette (pictured bottom above) with French sports car driver Jim Pla.

Group C – 1983 – 1993: The prime of the GTP and Group C era is at the heart of this division that always draws a strong entry. Entries this year include the Lowenbrau HR1 and an ex-Kremer/Leyton House Porsche 962, a Jaguar XJR-5, March 83G (pictured right above), Nissan NPT90 GTP and a quick GTP “Camel Lights” Porsche Fabcar. For the first time in 2019, Group C will share the track with Group D competitors.

Group D – 1994 – 2003: Historic but familiar, Group D has attracted a competitive mix of early Doran and Riley Daytona Prototypes and several big-bore Ford Mustang T/A, Oldsmobile Aurora, Saleen Mustang and Corvette C5R entries that will battle for production car honors with Porsche 944, 964 and 996 entries. An entry of note is the Classic Daytona return of Forest Barber in the same Bell Motorsports 2003 No. 54 Doran 2003 Doran JE4 he co-drove with Terry Borcheller, Christian Fittipaldi and Andy Pilgrim to the overall Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2004. Barber has owned the Daytona Prototype, which is entered for this year’s Classic Daytona by Doran Racing, ever since that milestone victory.

Group E – 2000 – 2018: This well-supported group lets premier ALMS and Le Mans prototypes not eligible to race at Daytona in their prime a chance to take to the 3.56-mile high-banked road course. Two Audi R8 LMPs, the three Pescarolo Judds, a Lola B07/18 LMP, Dallara Oreca DO-05, Courage LC75 and Ligier JSP2 LMP2 car will do battle in what could be one of the closest and fastest races in “HSR Classics” history. The GT field is equally diverse with Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Corvette and BMW all represented. An entry to watch is the GMT Racing 2007 No. 7 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP former group winner David Porter will be driving solo in the car’s Daytona debut.

Group F – 2000 – 2018: Group F has been revamped to showcase modern Prototype and GT race cars a few years removed from some of their Group E counterparts but just as attention-grabbing on the DIS high banks. The division is now home to a strong entry of the popular Oreca FLM09 Le Mans Prototype Challenge (LMPC) “PC” cars and Gen 2 and Gen 3 Daytona Prototypes “DP” cars no longer eligible for current IMSA competition. Both classes will compete against recently retired LMP2 cars of the same era, including an Oreca Judd. The GT field is just as strong with a solid entry of Porsche 993, 996, 997 and Caymans taking on Corvettes, Camaros, a BMW Z4 and even a second-generation Ford GT Mk7. A local entry of note is the JC Racing LLC 2015 No. 9 Corvette Daytona Prototype (pictured above) owned and driven by lifelong Daytona Beach resident JC France, who with co-drives with Tim Jernum and three-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Joao Barbosa.

Group G – HSR Cars: Formerly competing as Group F, the new Group G division is home to HSR classes not represented in the other groups. Offering a mix of primarily production cars from six different decades of competition, Group G includes many of the same teams and race cars that compete in HSR’s Vintage GT and Historic GT groups and the HSR Classic RS Cup and HSR Global GT series. Several different Porsche models from all generations make up the majority of the entries, but BMW, Mini Cooper, Aston Martin, Lotus and even a lone Subaru WRX STI are all represented. Other unique entries are Porsche 904 and Shelby Cobra recreations and the oldest American car in the race. The 1956 No. 57 Chevrolet Corvette (pictured below) of Dave Roberts is usually the oldest car at most race events, but this year it was edged by the debuting pair of 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwings in Group A. Roberts co-drives the Corvette with Martin Lauber and legendary NASCAR team owner and engineer Ray Evernham, a team that is combining to field an entry in all Classic Daytona Run Groups for the second-straight year.

The HSR Classic Daytona debuted in 2014 at the “World Center of Racing” and the immediate success of the inaugural event called for a second running in 2015. After a year off, the 24-Hour Classic Race on the 3.56-mile DIS road course returned in 2017 and is now an annual fixture on the HSR calendar.

A competitor test day on Wednesday, November 13, kicks off the 2019 HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA. The full-day test sets the stage for the following four days of official competition that culminates with the classic 24-hour race from Saturday, November 16, at 2 p.m. EST straight through to the final checkered flag 24 hours later on Sunday, November 17.

Information on the 2019 HSR Classic Daytona and HSR Daytona Historics, including event details, competitor entry forms, provisional event schedule, spectator tickets, media credentials and much more, can be found by clicking here.

The 2019 HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA entry list can be found by clicking here.

Noteworthy

– The Porsche 962 HR1 is the team’s all-star entry for the Classic Daytona, but Gunnar Racing is fielding three additional Porsches for the HSR Daytona weekend. The Gunnar stable also includes a 1973 No. 14 Porsche 914/6, a 1985 No. 14 Porsche 944 and a 2013 No. 14 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. The 944 and GT3 Cup car carry the same Lowenbrau livery of the 962 HR1 while the 914/6, which will compete only in the HSR Daytona Historics, is adorned in the traditional Holbert Racing blue with red and yellow stripes. The 944 has Rod Emory and Todd Holbert, son of the late Al Holbert, listed as drivers while Sales, the Bells and Gunnar Jeannette will all be listed and welcome to take a shift in each of the Porsches, depending on how the races unfold.

– Doubling up Groups C and D ensures the traditional format of the HSR Classic Daytona will literally continue like clockwork again this year. Including the combined Group C and D sessions, each HSR Classic Daytona Run Group takes to the track four times throughout the 24 hours. The competitors in each group covering the most total distance in the shortest amount of time in their four sessions will be crowned Classic Daytona presented by IMSA champions. Overall Run Group winners are awarded custom-designed HSR Classic Daytona B.R.M. Chronographes commissioned exclusively for the Classic 24-Hour race.

Next week’s Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic Daytona presented by IMSA will be the biggest running of the twice-around-the-clock blockbuster race to date, and a strong group of HSR partner sponsors and preferred vendors have stepped up to support the fifth running of the Classic 24-Hour race at Daytona International Speedway, Nov. 13 – 17.

Currently showing over 300 drivers in more than 180 entries from 15 different countries, the Classic Daytona entry list boasts an impressive collection of past and current champion drivers, sports car racing legends, motorsports notables, rare and priceless historic sports cars and much more.

The HSR partners and vendors supporting the HSR Classic Daytona are equally as notable and well-respected in both motorsports circles and their respective industries.

Part of the HSR Classic Daytona since the inaugural running of the Classic 24-Hour race in 2014, B.R.M. Chronographes is back this year as the Official Timepiece Partner of HSR.

Continuing a highlight tradition of the HSR Classic Daytona, each overall winner in Run Groups A through G — and the highest finishing GT competitors in Groups A through F — will be awarded Classic 24-Hour Commemorative B.R.M. Chronographes.

The HSR Classic Daytona support is just one part of the relationship between B.R.M. Chronographes and HSR that was further solidified earlier this year with a five-year partnership extension that will keep the luxury French watchmaker the Official Timepiece Partner of HSR through at least 2024.

Run Group winners at next month’s HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour and HSR season champions will also be awarded B.R.M. Chronographes.

Leading safety product manufacturer Stand21 has been a valued HSR partner since 2017 and a fixture on the worldwide motorsports scene for nearly 50 years.

The French manufacturer first made its mark with HSR with an exclusive line of Classic Daytona- and Classic Sebring 12 Hour-branded racewear a few years ago.

Stand 21 returns to DIS next week with some new additions to the “HSR Classics” line to complement the current offering of custom-designed racing suits, driving gloves and driving shoes that are available in various colors and with the customer’s choice of Daytona and Sebring race event logos.

Another iconic motorsports brand, BBS Wheels, will also be in full force at the HSR Classic Daytona. Along with two members of his sales staff, BBS of America, Inc. President Craig Donnelly will be available for both competitors and street wheel customers in their booth in the DIS FanZone and one-on-one with teams and drivers in the HSR paddock.

Joining BBS as an HSR Preferred Vendor at the HSR Classic Daytona is Christopher John Ltd., the North American distributor for Morgan cars (photo at top). Led by company principal Christopher Silvestri, Christopher John Ltd. will be located in the DIS FanZone with a display of Morgans for both the street and the track. Available offerings include a Morgan eligible for competition in HSR.

A Morgan car corral, organized by the central-Florida MOG South car club, is also part of the HSR Classic Daytona and will be located in the parking area near the owner driver lot across from the International Horseshoe. The group is hosting the George Waltman Memorial Tour and will have over 20 Morgans in the corral. Waltman drove solo in the 24 Hours of Daytona solo in 1968, finishing 30th in a 1964 Morgan Plus 4.

The complete list of HSR series sponsor partners includes B.R.M. Chronographes, WeatherTech, Speedcom Communications, Sasco Sports, Stand21, Hagerty, Sunoco and Christopher John Ltd. Nissan Motorsport is the Official Pace Car provider of HSR.

Classic Daytona specific partners or preferred vendors include B.R.M. Chronographes, Stand21, Hagerty, Omni Logistics, BBS Wheels, Christopher John Ltd. and Festivals of Speed.

A competitor test day on Wednesday, Nov. 13, kicks off the 2019 HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA. The full-day test sets the stage for the following four days of official competition that culminates with the classic 24-hour race from Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. EST straight through to the final checkered flag 24 hours later on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Default Largest Running of HSR Classic Daytona Gets Underway

Largest Running of HSR Classic Daytona Gets Underway

by Cyndi Paceley

Daytona Beach, FL — Now that yesterday’s test day is in the books, full-on action for the HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA is on the schedule for today through Sunday.

Photo: Patrick Tremblay (HSR)

With the official schedule and entry list updated last week, Historic Sportscar Racing is now overseeing the largest running of the fifth event — with over 300 drivers in more than 180 entries from 15 countries.

It is the first running of the race with a reformatted and expanded Run Group structure – most notably the division of the original Group E into two distinct classes each featuring modern but retired prototypes and GT race cars from this century.

Photo: Patrick Tremblay (HSR)

Here’s a rundown of those groups.

• Group A (1962-1972): Featuring legendary and early FIA-era prototype and GT machines that raced in international and world championship competition, the group has attracted race cars such as the Lola T70 and T165, Ford GT40 and several Chevron B8 and B16 models. Production-based cars of the era include an AC Cobra, Shelby Daytona Coupe, Shelby GT350, BRE Datsun 240Z and a strong lineup of early Camaros, Corvettes and Porsche 911s. Two entries of note are a pair of 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupes from the Germany-based HK-Engineering team. Vintage Motorsport columnist Jochen Mass co-drives one of the classic Mercedes along with teammates Hans Kleissl and the sister car duo of Christian Jager and Guido Haarmann.

• Group B (1973-1982): Includes Porsche 935s and other Porsche 911-based models, BMW CSLs and some big-bore Camaros and Corvettes; also home to several ultra-quick and classic sports prototypes including a half-dozen Chevron B19, B26 and B36 models, a March 75 S and Toj SC204. Another highlight is the return of the big-block Classic Automotive 1979 Greenwood Corvette with French sports car driver Jim Pla.

• Group C (1983-1993): Entries this year include the Lowenbrau HR1 and an ex-Kremer/Leyton House Porsche 962, a Jaguar XJR-5, March 83G, Nissan NPT90 GTP and a quick GTP “Camel Lights” Porsche Fabcar.

• Group D (1994-2003): Includes a competitive mix of early Doran and Riley Daytona Prototypes and several big-bore Ford Mustang T/A, Oldsmobile Aurora, Saleen Mustang and Corvette C5R entries that will battle for production car honors with Porsche 944, 964 and 996 entries.

• Group E (2000-201: Includes premier ALMS and Le Mans prototypes not eligible to race at Daytona in their prime.

• Group F (2000-201: Revamped to showcase modern Prototype and GT race cars.

• Group G (HSR Cars): Formerly competing as Group F, the new Group G division is home to HSR classes not represented in the other groups, offering a mix of primarily production cars from six different decades of competition, including many of the same teams and race cars that compete in HSR’s Vintage GT and Historic GT groups and the HSR Classic RS Cup and HSR Global GT series.

Classic 24-Hour race hits halfway

Run Group front-runners emerged while some favorites and early contenders encountered setbacks as the HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA raced through the midnight hour and hit the halfway mark early Sunday morning at Daytona International Speedway.

The fifth running of the Classic 24-Hour race at the “World Center of Racing” began at 2 p.m. EST Saturday afternoon and five of the race’s seven Run Groups completed the first two of their four segments before the clock struck midnight.

A pair of Lola T70 MkIII teams that have each scored HSR Classic Daytona victories in the past split the first two Group A segment wins. Last year’s group winners James Cullen and Frank Beck moved their title defense off to a good start with a victory in the first Group A segment in the Olthoff Racing 1970 No. 101 Lola T70 MkIII, but another Lola entry took the class lead with a second segment win Saturday night.

Gerard Lopez and Frantz Wallenborn – who co-drive this year with Eric Helary – scored the Group A victory in 2017 in the Iconic Racing 1969 No. 1 Lola T70 MkIII. The European team is halfway home to a second title after taking runner-up honors in Saturday’s first segment and the victory in the second.

The Iconic No. 1 team’s move to the front came a multi-car accident on the opening lap of the second Group A segment sidelined the Beck and Cullen entry. Beck was uninjured in the four-car melee that also saw John Morton walk away unscathed after the 1970 BRE Datsun 240Z the Nissan/Datsun racing legend was driving ended up on its roof.

In Group B, HSR Classic Daytona debuting driver Matteo Ferrer won the first segment in the Amalfi Racing 1976 No. 5 Porsche 935/K, but it was Alain Rüede who emerged to take the group lead at the halfway point. Rüede finished first in segment two in his 1982 No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro IROC to take the overall group lead over not only his GT competition but a stout field of sports racers as well.

The combined Group C and D format has produced some of the best and most dramatic racing so far in the first half of the HSR Classic Daytona. John McKenna and Ross Thompson co-drove the ex-SunTrust 2006 No. 10 Riley MkII Daytona Prototype to the overall and Group D victory in the first segment only to be knocked out the race with a broken axle on the opening lap of the second race.

That opened the door for the 2003 No. 54 Doran JE4 Daytona Prototype of Forest Barber and Terry Borcheller to not only take Group D honors in segment two but also give a stout challenge to the Group C leading and legendary Holbert Racing No. 14 Lowenbrau Special Porsche 962 HR1 prepared by Gunnar Racing.

With Borcheller at the wheel of the Doran and Gunnar Jeannette driving the HR1, the No. 54 and No. 14 battled for the overall segment two lead while taking respective wins in Group D and Group C in the combined class race.

Group E started the HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA on Saturday afternoon and then brought the race to within minutes of Midnight late Saturday night. Reigning and three-time Group E winners Andy Wallace and Doug Smith move their title defense off to a fast start with Wallace taking the first segment win in the Rogers Motorsports 2005 No. 38 Audi R8 LMP.

With a heavy mist and slight rain fall leading into the second segment, two-time Daytona and Sebring “HSR Classics” winner David Porter called on champion driver Joao Barbosa to drive his Daytona debuting 2007 No. 7 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP prepared by GMT Racing.

Barbosa took the segment two win but a close second-place finish by Smith was enough to keep the No. 38 Audi in the overall Group E lead by 14 seconds at half distance.

The HSR Classic Daytona 24-hour race will run straight through to the checkered flag Sunday at 2 p.m. EST. Spectator tickets can still be purchased at HSR Registration at DIS Gate 40 off Williamson Boulevard from now through 11 a.m. EST Sunday.

Noteworthy:
  • The No. 54 Kevin Doran-prepared Doran JE4 Barber and Borcheller race this weekend is the same car the duo, joined by Christian Fittipaldi and Andy Pilgrim, drove to victory in the 2004 Rolex 24 At Daytona 15 years ago. Barber, who has been the sole owner of the car since 2003, joined Borcheller in entering the Classic Daytona in 2017 only to be sidelined with a mechanical issue before the start. This year’s competitive start comes in the first race Borcheller – a seven-time sports car racing champion in his prime – has started in two years. He won a second Rolex 24 At Daytona overall in 2010.
  • Another notable early retirement was the Sundry Racing 1992 No. 5 Oldsmobile Aurora GTS of Steve Cohen and Ray Snowdon. The team topped their GT rivals and several prototype competitors for the overall Group D victory last year but weren’t as fortunate today. Cohen was at the wheel in segment one when a rock or other piece of debris dislodged the serpentine belt on the Aurora’s engine. The water pump and other key components stopped after the failure, but Cohen carefully brought the car back to the garage at idle speed. Having completed only two laps today, and entered for next month’s HSR Classic Sebring, the Sundry team elected to retire the No. 5 from the Classic Daytona and prepare for the Classic 12-Hour race.
  • The HSR Daytona Historics for the season-long HSR championships came to a successful, safe and competitive conclusion Saturday morning prior to the start of the HSR Classic Daytona. The event saw the major race debut of Ashley Helenbrook, who is well known in the HSR paddock as a founding co-owner of clothing supplier RacerInk, at the wheel of her 1996 No. 131 BMW 328i. With business partner and fiancé Cody Ellsworth – a former HSR champion and HSR Classic Daytona race winner – serving as driving coach, Helenbook finished all three of her Daytona Historics races. The results included third and fourth place SSC-class finishes in the Friday/Saturday WeatherTech sprint races and a solid 17th overall showing in Friday’s hour-long Enduro.
