Is it Illegal???
not in Jacksonville it's called an altered VIN and 17 people just went to jail over it... the key to doing what you are wanting to do is getting a bill of sale on the wrecked bike including the MOTOR number which is not the VIN but it is linked and the cops can verify it... you then buy a clean title frame from ebay or other source and mount everything up and you've got all the records to show if there's ever an issue... if you want a copy of the bill of sales i use shoot me an email and i'll give you one in Microsoft word... thisismymessage@aol.com
the guy that said buy a frame from Yamaha is partially correct but you have to send the neck of your damaged frame to yamaha to buy the blank and they will stamp it
Always check with your DMV, yes this will be a long time on hold to talk with someone who is working with only 2 brain cells but, every state has different laws. If you know someone at a local dealer ask them what they do when they are replacing a frame. If the frame is stamped the factory has to do it. If it is a plate that is rivited to the frame it will be easy to transfer. Make sure that you have all the receipts from the purchase donor frame and the title to the bike vin that you want to use. The motor id# and the vin number will need to be linked in the DMV data base once the swap has taken place. Just a lot of red tape to deal with.
