[h=1]Lake Mirror Promenade[/h]
Beginning in 2013, the mission of the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival will be to help fund the preservation and restoration of historic Lake Mirror Park so that our community and it’s guests will be able to enjoy this nationally registered landmark for many generations to come. The Friends of Lake Mirror Fund is a newly created non-profit fund administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland. In addition to a portion of the proceeds from the Lake Mirror Classic, individual and corporate donations will be graciously accepted.
[h=2]History[/h]Downtown Lakeland’s history for the last 100 years is reflected in the developing story of Lake Mirror. The work to make Lake Mirror a downtown destination started early in the 20th Century. Not long after the promenade’s 1928 dedication, National Geographic said of the area around the lake, “Like an ornate entrance to some vast Venetian palace looms the Civic Center of Lakeland.”
[h=3]Dedication[/h]
The Great Depression affected not only our standard of living, but our civic pride. By the time Lakeland made it through the Depression and World War II, the city was looking for chances to trumpet Downtown. In March 1946, the walkway around Lake Mirror was dedicated as the Frances Langford Promenade, after one of our city’s residents who had found stardom in radio and movies.
[h=3]Decay[/h]In the mid 1950′s, US Highway 92′s Business route was built around the exterior of Lake Mirror, connecting Main Street and Lemon Street directly to Bartow Highway. This spelled trouble for the park, for both shores were almost completely surrounded with roadway.
Storms and improper cleaning would damage the seawall in the 1960s. In 1973, The Ledger wrote that the lighting was failing and should be replaced. By April 1974, the Tampa Tribune would decry the downfall of the area in an article entitled, “Once-Beautiful Seawall, Civic Center in Decay.”
In an article in the March 1979 Ledger, a reporter wrote “At one time the loggia, under Main Street, housed restrooms, benches, and a grotto. But the traffic around the lake increased so much that there were seldom pedestrians in the area and finally the loggia was closed, barred and locked. Today the city’s electric and water department use the loggia to store equipment.”
[h=3]Recovery[/h]The time was ripe for a small group of citizens to reverse the damage and force a change. Historic Lakeland formed with the goal of rebuilding Lake Mirror. By 1983, they successfully petitioned to have the area added to the National Registry of Historic Places. By 1987, the city rededicated a repaired and refreshed Lake Mirror.
Since the late 80s, there have been many more improvements: Lemon Street south of the park is closed, Hollis Gardens sits on the Southern shore, the old Dixie Highway landing now sports Albert Paley’s “Tribute to Volunteerism.”
MetroJacksonville has an excellent article on the reconstruction of the Lake Mirror Promenade in the late 90′s. If you’re interested in learning more about Lake Mirror’s history, please click here to read it.

The Lake Mirror Promenade (also known as the Frances Langford Promenade, or the First Civic Center) is the host of most of the events for the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival. Designed by Charles Leavitt, and championed by Tom Appleyard, the then-manager of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, the Promenade was constructed in 1928. It is a member of the National Register of Historic Places, added January 27, 1983.[h=2]History[/h]Downtown Lakeland’s history for the last 100 years is reflected in the developing story of Lake Mirror. 1956 BMW Isetta A similar car has been on display at the Lake Mirror Classic in Lakeland
[h=2]About This Car[/h]First developed by Renzo Rivolta’s Iso works in Italy, the Isetta was also license-built by BMW in West Germany, where it’s unusual shape begat the whimsical nickname das rollende Ei (the rolling egg). The Isetta may have sold poorly in Italy, but the timing for BMW was perfect, as it quickly became fashionable despite its humble “people’s car” roots. Thanks to its ease of operation in high-traffic European cities, the Isetta also enjoyed widespread use with West Germany’s Bundespost (postal service). In the United States, the Isetta achieved cult status following several appearances on popular TV variety shows of the era. [h=3]- Quick Specs -[/h]
Beginning with the Model 250, which entered production in early 1955 with a 247-cc single-cylinder engine, the basic Isetta design evolved into the Isetta 300 with a slightly more-powerful 298-cc engine for 1956. It measured just seven feet, nine inches long and only four-and-a-half feet wide. As a result, Isetta owners were never at a loss for a parking space, contributing to their strong popularity among city dwellers. In fact, in many ways the success of this incredibly small and economical automobile saved BMW from being taken over by Mercedes-Benz, its much larger rival, during the late 1950s. BMW made the Isetta its own. They redesigned the powerplant around a more reliable BMW one-cylinder, four-stroke, 247 cc motorcycle engine making 13 hp. Although the major elements of the Italian design remained intact, BMW re-engineered much of the car, so much so that none of the parts between a BMW Isetta Moto Coupe and an Iso Isetta are interchangeable. The first BMW Isetta appeared in April, 1955.
This car was auctioned off by RM Auctions in January of 2012 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, Phoenix, Arizona and in May of 2012 at the Grimaldi Forum, Monaco. Also part of the RM Auctions event for Bruce Weiner in February, 2013.
13 bhp, 298 cc air-cooled OHV single-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission with chain/sprocket drive, leading-arm front suspension with coil springs, rigid rear axle with quarter-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 59.1"
