Motorsports HoF takes a bow in ‘Ford v Ferrari’

Anyone who has seen “Ford v Ferrari,” the blockbuster 20th Century Fox film depicting Ford Motor Co.’s effort — spearheaded by Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale) — to unseat Ferrari as the king of Le Mans, saw this before the credits rolled: “Revered by racing fans worldwide, Ken Miles was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.”“The goal that our late president Ron Watson had from the outset was that induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America would be seen as the ultimate motorsports credential,” said George Levy, president of the MSHFA, “just as with Cooperstown for baseball and Canton for football. The mention in ‘Ford v Ferrari’ is proof that goal is being realized.”

Miles was indeed inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2001. Shelby preceded Miles into the Hall in 1992. And there were many more MSHFA inductees who had a role in Ford’s success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966 … and 1967, 1968 and ’69. Some were depicted in the movie and some were not. Other Hall of Famers took part in the 1966 race that saw the first-ever victory by an American car.

Phil Remington, Shelby’s master fabricator, played by Ray McKinnon, shared the screen quite a bit with Damon and Bale. He was inducted into the MSHFA this past March in the Class of 2019.

Remington, who died in 2013 at the age of 92, was presented for induction by his daughter, Kati Blackledge (pictured below in 1968 with her father and this past March at the MSHFA induction), who this year has finally seen her father gain some deserved recognition on both the silver screen and with his enshrinement into the MSHFA.
“The Motorsports Hall of Fame of America is a wonderful organization, and I was truly impressed when I set foot inside the museum for the first time when my dad was inducted,” Blackledge said. “I remember looking around and thinking it is very cool my dad is now part of something this big. To my knowledge, my father was never in a winner’s circle photograph his entire career. He cared about victories, but not the glory associated with winning. He had an internal satisfaction from winning but never cared about the spotlight. Then, finally, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America comes along with a call from Ron Watson saying this man — who literally spent his entire life winning races behind the scenes — is going to be inducted, and I thought, ‘Finally he got the big win.'”

Released Friday, November 15, “Ford v Ferrari” grossed more than $40 million as the No. 1 movie over the next week. Its popularity remains strong, with “Ford v Ferrari” trailing only Disney’s highly anticipated “Frozen II” as last weekend’s No. 2 movie.

Part 2 Hall of Fame.....
Including Shelby, Miles and Remington, nine different MSHFA inductees are portrayed by actors in the movie.

Denis Hulme, Miles’ co-driver in 1966, was played by race car and stunt driver Ben Collins. Hulme joined the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Bruce McLaren was inducted in 1995. Played by Benjamin Rigby in the movie, McLaren, like Miles, was one of Ford’s primary development drivers and won the ’66 race with co-driver Chris Amon. 1991 MSHFA inductee Dan Gurney (center in picture above with Miles at left and Shelby to the right) won pole, set fastest lap and led the 1966 race comfortably before his Shelby American entry broke. He and A.J. Foyt (MSHFA Class of 1989) became the only Americans to win the race in an American-made car in 1967. Alex Gurney, Dan’s youngest son, played his father in “Ford v Ferrari.”

John Holman & Ralph Moody also ran Ford GT40s in the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours. A Holman & Moody entry finished third. Holman, who was inducted into the MSHFA along with his partner in 2005, was played by Christopher Dargah.

Actor Darrin Prescott played 2003 inductee Bob Bondurant. Bondurant and 2013 inductee Masten Gregory drove a North American Racing Team (NART) Ferrari 365 P2 at the 1966 24 Hours (DNF).

Lloyd Ruby, inducted in 2005 and played by Adam Mayfield, won the previous two legs of sports car racing’s triple crown (Daytona, Sebring and Le Mans) with Miles and was slated to drive with him at Le Mans before he crashed his plane two weeks prior to the race. “Hard Luck Lloyd” was sidelined for a month-and-a-half, missing his date with history.

“The success of ‘Ford v Ferrari’ hopefully will inspire other filmmakers to bring the stories of these and other inductees to the screen,” Levy said. “Stories we tell every day to visitors to our museum at Daytona International Speedway and on our website, www.mshf.com.”

The MSHFA’s next induction ceremony will take place March 17, at the Shores Resort and Spa Hotel in Daytona Beach. MSHFA Induction Week also includes the annual Heroes of Horsepower Reception, Monday, March 16, at the MSHFA Museum, and two additional inductee events, including a Monday luncheon and Tuesday breakfast.

Noteworthy

• While honored to see her father featured so prominently in the movie, Blackledge couldn’t help but notice the character portrayed was much different than her dad. Remington — always called “Rem” by his teammates and friends — was in his mid-40s when Ford went to Le Mans and never had a beard, let alone a mustache, in his life. McKinnon’s character portrays a much older Remington with a mustache that answered to both “Phil” and “Pops” in the film. “My mom was the only one who ever called him Phil, and I remember laughing the first time they called him ‘Pops’ in the movie,” Blackledge said. “I could hear in my head my dad saying, ‘You calling me Pops?! I’ll give you a pop!’ and rolling his eyes and walking away. He was really funny and always had this mischievous smirk on his face. He had these ice blue eyes that were very piercing, such a handsome guy, but you knew it when he was shooting you that look.”

Other MSHFA inductees who were involved with the 1966 Le Mans race include:

• Phil Hill (MSHFA Class of 1989) – The American’s three Le Mans victories for Ferrari helped establish the Italian firm’s dominance. He drove Ford GTs in 1964 and ’65, and a Chaparral 2D in 1966 (DNF).

• Jim Hall (MSHFA Class of 1994) – Designed the Chevy-powered Chaparral driven by Hill and Jo Bonnier.

• Richie Ginther (MSHFA Class of 200 – Drove a NART Ferrari 330 P3 (DNF).

• Mario Andretti (MSHFA Class of 1990) – Drove a Holman & Moody Ford GT in the 1966 race (DNF).

• Sam Posey (MSHFA Class of 2016) – Drove a Chevrolet Bizzarrini GT Strada 5300 (DQ) coupe in the 1966 race.

• David Hobbs (MSHFA Class of 2009) – Made 20 starts at Le Mans, including a Ferrari Dino 206 S in 1966 (DNF).

• Mark Donohue (MSHFA Class of 1990) – Drove for Holman & Moody at Le Mans in 1966 (DNF) and Shelby American in 1967 when he finished second in class and fourth overall.

• George Follmer (MSHFA Class of 1999) – Drove a Ferrari Dino 206 S for NART in the 1966 race (DNF).

• Peter Revson (MSHFA Class of 1996) – America’s first Can-Am champion drove an Essex Wire GT40 in 1966 (DNF).

• Jacky Ickx (MSHFA Class of 2020) – Drove an Essex Wire GT40 in 1966 (DNF) and won in a John Wyer GT40 in 1969.

• Masten Gregory (MSHFA Class of 2013) – Won the 1965 race for in a NART Ferrari 250 LM, Enzo Ferrari’s last-ever overall victory in the French classic.

• Leo Mehl (MSHFA Class of 2007) – Oversaw the creation and distribution of Goodyear tires that won the race.

‘Ford v Ferrari’ Brings History To The Big Screen For Ford Fans

By Nicole Ellan James December 27, 2019Words can’t begin to describe what it’s like to meet the surviving members of Carroll Shelby’s team that worked on the original GT40, and those who took it to the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hour race. It is a surreal and beyond chilling experience to be within feet of the car Ken Miles drove during the race. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the Original Venice Crew well and to drive one of their cars at Willow Springs International Motorsports Park in California. Gary Paterson and other members of the Shelby American team feel more like my family than anything else. I want to think I have become as close to the story as I could, without having lived through it and been there myself.

What I loved most about Twentieth Century Fox’s Ford v Ferrari, released in theaters on November 15th, is that director James Mangold brought history to life with the film.

While based on real events, the film receives inspiration from A.J. Baime’s 2009 book, Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans.

Carroll Shelby is played by Matt Damon, who, as the movie opens, circa the mid-1960s, gives up his driving career due to a heart condition after winning at Le Mans for Aston Martin. While managing his race team, Shelby takes on the seemingly impossible challenge of helping Ford develop a race car to beat Enzo Ferrari and win the 24-hour Le Mans race.

Shelby enlists the best driver and racing engineer he knows — the English-born, Los Angeles-based Ken Miles, played by Christian Bale. Bale brings Miles to life as a freewheeling, tea-loving bloke who understands the delicate mechanics of race cars inside and out, but struggles to interact with other human beings.
In the film, the GT40 Carroll and Ken initially develop together goes to Le Mans. Still, Ken’s prickly personality sees him left behind. Racing enthusiasts and Ford fans know what happens next, but it should be a surprise to everyone else. And for those wondering, a remarkable amount of the film is accurate, with a few exaggerated embellishments that help move the story along and convey the friendship theme Mangold wanted to showcase.

Tracy Letts plays an arrogant Henry Ford II: his performance seems boisterous and enjoyably overdone at first — but shifts into the dark territory of vulnerability. The young Ford henchman and future Chrysler exec, Lee Iacocca, is wonderfully played by John Bernthal.

The production design of Ford v Ferrari is period-specific. It accomplishes a lived-in look: various radios and dials actually look used, rather than appear new or designed to look worn. The attention to detail is part of what makes this movie — shot by Phedon Papamichael — such a gorgeous-looking piece of work, complete with grease-stained garages and California sunsets.

And the racing scenes are spectacular to behold. Driving and racing enthusiasts will love the well-shot and edited movie stunt driving. In an interview with Matt Damon and Christian Bale, the men disclosed they did as much of the driving as they could, “but if we had done all of it, the race sequences would have been very slow and boring,” Bale said.

The cars themselves are jewel-like as they swerve and curve around twists and turns. Bale told us “they look good, they sound good, they smell good.” Sometimes they dramatically crash and explode. It’s always clear where one car is in relation to another; there’s no crazy slice-and-dice cutting or an endless amount of unnecessary gear shifts. The racing scenes have a fast and beautiful visual logic to them but never come across as furious.

Superformance created two cars used in the movie — the Ken Miles Hero Car driven by Christian Bale, and Bruce McLaren’s black GT40 that placed first at Le Mans in 1966.

The Ken Miles car was built at Superformance in Irvine, California. Superformance designed the car to ensure that every conceivable detail was accurate, in order to give it as authentic and correct an appearance as possible. Superformance did all of this before the car had even been selected for filming, however, all the attention to detail meant the Superformance GT40 was the car to be used for close up shots.

The GT40 is powered by a Roush 427IR V8 engine bored to 511ci, producing 604 horsepower and 572 lb-ft of torque. It’s topped with numerous performance features such as a K&N Inglese-style injection system and a rear-exit “Bundle of Snakes” exhaust. Power is sent through an RBT/ZF-style 5-speed manual transaxle.

Additionally, the GT40, adorned with its legendary blue livery, features a pressed steel roof and a unibody structure constructed of electro-galvanized steel. The independent front suspension hosts unequal-length A-arms, Bilstein shocks with H&R springs, and an anti-roll bar. Out back is an independent rear suspension with trailing arms, unequal-length lateral arms, Bilstein shocks with H&R springs, and an anti-roll bar.

Rack-and-pinion steering provides easy and accurate direction, while vented disc brakes withWilwood calipers easily bring speeds down. Rolling on Shelby American Halibrand-style wheels with knock-off hubs, the righthand drive car also features original-style seats covered in Alcantara with silver rivets, Smiths Instruments gauges, and a Moto-Lita steering wheel, among other fastidious details.

The car is signed by Ken Miles’ 1966 crew chief, Charlie Agapiou, and Ken Miles’ son, Peter Miles, and will be offered by Mecum Auctions at its 2020 Kissimmee sale in January.

Ford v Ferrari is a must-see for Ford fans and racing enthusiasts alike, as it is indeed a “moving movie,” gracefully honoring Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles. Drive, don’t walk, to view it.

We Join Ford v Ferrari Movie Crew, Stunt Drivers At Daytona Rolex 24

By Dave Pankew January 29, 2020If you haven’t seen the Ford v Ferrari movie yet, we’re surprised you are still here and not enjoying it on now-available digital download. The Academy Award-nominated movie not only has the star power to make it a smash hit, but it might become the highest-grossing racing movie of all time.

We sat down during the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona with key players from the film, including the Ford v Ferrari stunt coordinator, stunt driver, and several notable racers like Hurley Haywood, Scott Pruett, and the legendary Roger Bailey. We couldn’t think of a better event to discuss the Ford v Ferrari film’s digital release and upcoming BluRay and DVD on-sale date for those looking to hold on to the memories of one unforgettable Matt Damon and Christian Bale motorsport masterpiece.
As the Rolex 24 race raged on outside, we took a few hours out of the 24 of this legendary American endurance race to talk to the crew of the Ford v Ferrari movie. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

As the Rolex 24 race raged on outside our conference room, we took a few hours out of the 24 of this premier American endurance race to talk to these living legends. And of course, as racing fanatics, the TURNology team asked the right questions to really get a feel for the story behind the Hollywood glam about how the stunts, precision driving, and historical facts make this racing flick one of the benchmarks for our generation.

Motor racing in the 1960s bred some of the most important and most valuable race cars ever produced, just like those in the film. During our rapid-fire interviews, we learned that the value of all the classic race cars in the scene filmed inside Scuderia Ferrari was more than the budget of the film itself. Bust out that fact at the next track day!

The Rolex 24 was the perfect event to discuss the Ford v Ferrari film’s digital release and upcoming BluRay and DVD of this unforgettable Matt Damon and Christian Bale motorsport masterpiece. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.
We cornered Stunt Coordinator Robert Nagle and one of the drivers on the Ford v Ferrari film, Jeff Bucknum (yes, that Bucknum), the son of race car driver Ronnie Bucknum who drove the No. 5 GT40 in the 1966 Le Mans 24h race. Nagle has been the stunt lead on a few films with wild driving sequences such as Baby Driver, Spider-Man: Homecoming, John Wick 2, Mission Impossible, and Captain Marvel. Nagle gave us an inside look at how the film came together since the entire movie was driving-centric and not just related to a few scenes.
Christian Bale was a fantastic driver and, hands down, the best actor I have given driving instruction to. — Stunt Coordinator, Robert Nagle
Ford v Ferrari stunt coordinator, Robert Nagle, has been the stunt boss on a few films, including Baby Driver, Spider-Man: Homecoming, John Wick 2, Mission Impossible, and Captain Marvel. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The hardest scenes in the movie were when the cars were flying through the air and tumbling,“ says Nagle. “It was very challenging to get the timing right, and have the rest of the traffic in the right spot, take after take, to hit their mark.”

How did this translate to the dozens of stunt drivers on set? Well, we questioned Jeff Bucknum, who had an extremely important connection to the film. As mentioned above, his father Ronnie was the co-driver of the Holman Moody Ford GT40, the No.5 car that placed Third crossing the finish line in the legendary scene that saw Bruce McLaren ironically take the win.
“When we did the finish line scene, my Dad’s car actually came in Third, but I joked to the stunt team that I was gonna gas it and place first for his memory. So, I did just that on the first take, even though the director was yelling: cut!” – Jeff Bucknum. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

“I drove six cars in the movie, but driver Tanner Foust and Robert Nagle were gracious enough to allow me to drive my Dad’s replica car in the movie,” says Bucknum. “And I took some liberties during filming since we did a lot of driving.

“When we did the finish line scene, my Dad’s car actually came in Third, but I joked to the stunt team that I was gonna gas it and place first for his memory. So, I did just that on the first take, even though the director was yelling ‘cut.’ It was a very emotional moment for me. But, it was important to put all that emotion into the driving scenes I was part of since the last time I raced was 2012, so it meant a lot.”
“Christian Bale was a fantastic driver and, hands down, the best actor I have given driving instruction too” – Robert Nagle. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

“Christian Bale was a fantastic driver and, hands down, the best actor I have given driving instruction to,” says Nagle. “I took him down to the Bob Bondurant driving school to train, but also to talk with Bob since he knew Ken Miles very well. His aptitude was phenomenal, learning the craft and diving into that role behind the wheel.”

There were a few seasoned racers on-hand to quiz about how their input in the film and the outcome of Ford v Ferrari lined up. CART and IMSA racer Scott Pruett was there, as was five-time winner of the Rolex 24 and three-time Le Mans winner Hurley Haywood, along with a man who was actually involved in the 1966 Le Mans race, Roger Bailey.
We sat down at Daytona during the Rolex 24 with key players from Ford v Ferrari including the stunt coordinator, stunt driver, and several notable racers like (L-R)Hurley Haywood, Scott Pruett, and the legendary Roger Bailey. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

We asked them about the integrity of the film and the dedication to documenting the significant war between Ford in the USA with the Italians at Ferrari after a business deal went south.

They unanimously agreed there were a handful of inconsistencies like the yellow lines on the Circuit de la Sarthe (there are none) or giving the illusion that they were racing around planes in GT40s on the tarmac at Shelby American headquarters (they didn’t). However, all of the racers “loved the movie” and said it was only a natural dose of Hollywood entertainment, which was needed to create an entertaining movie.
Involving legends like Roger Bailey, who helped build the 1966 Ford GT MkIIs for the Ford v Ferrari movie, captured the Le Mans drama using old school stunts without the aid of computer graphics. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

Ford v Ferrari is a solid racing effort, and after meeting with the crew and these racing legends, it leaves us wanting to see it again. Luckily, the movie just released on 4K digital download on popular services like Google Play and Apple iTunes, but a hardcopy on BluRay or DVD is coming February 11.

Until then, we know how they made it all happen and put a monumental effort out to recreate the 1960s Le Mans drama using old school tech without the aid of computer graphics.
The Ford v Ferrari movie has also been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Editing coming up February 9th. Photo credit: Kasia Pogorzelski.

The Ford v Ferrari movie has also been nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Editing. We will see if a ‘Dad Drama’ racing flick actually gets some recognition at the Academy Awards February 9th.

33.2K subscribersKen Miles is more than just a person portrayed by Christian Bale in Ford vs Ferrari. He was actually a very accomplished racer and from the same part of the world as me. Where he has ZERO recognition. But who was he before the movie? Well- Find out! Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

The Henry Ford
16.3K subscribersFew auto racing efforts were as ambitious as Ford’s quest to beat Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most important sports car race, in the 1960s. Ford’s dedication paid off, first in 1966 when GT40s finished 1-2-3 at the French endurance race,

and then again in 1967 with an all-American victory by drivers Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt in the Ford Mark IV. Fifty years later, we look at the Mark IV – and Ford’s long road to glory at Le Mans.
