November 16 2019 meeting........
Arriving at Winn Dixie, W-D had roped off several parking spaces. What great service!
.........that turned out to be for the blood mobile and not us.
---------------------------------
Before anyone else showed up, Vic and I sat in Vic's 39? 40? Lincoln Zephyr during a light rain mist as he told me about his trip up north to deliver a concours car from a museum to the show grounds, and the steps needed in order to figure out how to make it run under it's own power after years of sitting idle with a perfect visual museum restoration, but little done to make it run well.
----------------------------
The rain stopped.
The Keystone Motor Club meeting was at Winn Dixie 17649 Gunn Hwy and Van Dyke Road, Odessa.
Thanks go to Milt Roorda who supplied everyone with Dunkin Doughnuts.
Milt always has an interesting display, and today he did a show-and-tell related to the Model T transmission
and magneto....If I got that right. He also pulled out one of the Model T "wooden" ignition coils for us to look at.

Parking his Model T truck sideways in the "notch" gave us a perfect spot to put up the Keystone Motor Club banner.
As told to me, When founded, the club name was "Keystone MOTOR Club" and it was a requirement that a member own a motor of some kind lawn mower, tractor, auto........anything with a motor. This newsletter was recently edited to correct mistaken other club names to read "Keystone Motor Club". If anyone finds something otherwise, let me know please.

The display attracted Carlos and one other spectator.

Vic passed out some posters, cigars, and other Cigar City Concours memorabilia.

Attending on November 16 2019:
Milt Roorda
Vic Piano
Dick Peterson
Alan Mevorah
Jan Nelson
Bob Vail
New attendees were
Kyle Winston and
Max Winston
Names and emails are being added so the Winstons will receive Keystone meeting reminders

----------------------------
PLEASE NOTE: THERE WILL BE NO DECEMBER 2019 MEETING

1.We are looking into the January 18 2020 meeting to be held tentatively at someone's house.
2.Milt Roorda has suggested that we meet in his AIR CONDITIONED garage during July and August.
I think we should accept his offer.
----------------

Keeper of the banner is now Milt Roorda.
Keeper of the table and tent is Vic Piano.

Default Swing axles, Flip Sygnarski, Operation Grand Slam and JOY 123

An article for Keystone Motor Club:

While doing a search for videos related to the movie Ford V Ferrari, -now over 30 of them........I found a film from that time that mentioned Triumph Spitfires
competing at Lemans. It was a promotional film produced by the Standard Triumph Motor Company of Coventry, England. The film documents the 1965 24hr of Le Mans and the 4 Triumph Spitfire racing prototypes entered by the company.Triumph never identified their cars other than Spitfire racing prototypes with 1.1 litre inline 4 cylinder engines and aerodynamic hard tops. 1.1 liters is about 1/2 of a 2 litre soda bottle.........and yet racing at lemans.
---------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

Time was closing in on the smaller engined cars.....
Speeds were rising......
At the Daytona 24 Hours, the long-tailed Porsche prototypes would pass the SAME small engined Bug-eyed Sprite TWICE PER LAP......EVERY LAP.....
I know because I Timed the Porsches.
----------------------------------
At Sebring one year, a Spitfire flipped in the Timing-Scoring turn where I was working.
The rear swing axle had no limiting straps to prevent downward axle travel, and the car jacked itself up and rolled right over in the air.

In Macdill Sports car club, we had been requiring rear axle limiting straps for swing axles at our autocrosses for some time.....
------------------------
I had been tech inspector at a Macdill Sports Car Club autocross at the Schlitz Brewery (now a Yuengling brewery in 2019)
When I told an NSU driver that he needed rear axle limiting straps, or he couldn't run. He argued and had some unkind things to say.

I finally agreed to allow him to demonstrate that his rear swing axle car would not flip over.
He drove away quickly and made a u-turn............and flipped his NSU over onto it's roof.

I said nothing to him...and did not need to.
---------------------------------------

Story #2: An even earlier time.....late 60's
Operation Grand Slam was a MacDill Sports Car Club autocross at an abandoned WWII runway/airport near Sanford Florida.

I owned no car and was promised a ride to the autocross with Flip Sygnarski in a 356 Porsche hardtop....if I could get to the meetup spot.
Flip was famous as a real racing driver, having obtained an SCCA competition license.
Both of us were stationed at MacDill Air Force Base at the time. The club was meeting for the drive to Sanford at Ayres Diner on Dale Mabry, West side (approximately across from Village Inn) . My ride from the air base had let me out, and as I walked across Dale Mabry, I was hoping that I would get a ride in that Porsche.
I got my dream. The car was beautiful and smelled just like leather and rubber with a hint of Castrol R-30, as I imagined all Porsches of that time would smell.
--------------------------
As we hit the I-4, I asked him how he got the name "Flip".
He told me he had flipped his 356 Porsche in Turn One (Timing Scoring turn) of the infield course at Daytona. Nowadays all cars have transponders to score them. I guess that would now be called Infield turn one in 2019.

356 Porsches had a rear swing axle, but in those days not enough people knew swing axles would pivot downward in a hard turn causing the car rear end to rise and flip over.....something lowered cars did not often do.
---------------------------------

Years later.....I saw the empty shell of Flip's car sitting behind a small Garage belonging to Herb Trinka on US 19 in Clearwater.
It was in the waning years of Herb Trinka's mechanical career. I knew the car had belonged to Flip since the yellow and black New Jersey tag "JOY 123" was still on it. New Jersey tags of that era had no expiration sticker.
Working up my courage on a cold Sunday morning, recalling my memories, and with a hint of a tear in my eyes
I removed the tag, knowing the empty shell was headed to the crusher.

Porsches should always be given a Viking funeral instead of being crushed.
I still have that faded tag today hidden amongst lesser known car tags in my garage.
-----------------------------------------------------

Back to Operation Grand Slam,
After the event, I accepted a ride home with Drucella Sing in her Triumph Spitfire, She lived in the trailer park at Gandy and MacDill Ave in Tampa which is now vacated and probably about to be sold in November of 2019.
----------------------------
Drucella had not competed in MSCC's autocross that day, and as we were leaving, no doubt overcome by a
day's worth of revving engines, spinning tires, and the smell of gasoline fumes, she decided to get on the gas in a sharp left hander
....................and drove the Spitfire off the road to the right when the rear swing arm tucked under the car just enough to head us off the road and into a (luckily) small palmetto tree. I never saw her again after that day.
---------------------

Time was also closing in on swing axle rear suspensions
-Bob
