Default Mario, I understand. An article for the Keystone Motor Club

An article for the Keystone newsletter:
https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/a...ml#post9422853
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mario, I understand. An article for the Keystone Motor Club

"The engine sounds, they are my song" - Andretti Image by Campsite Media House
By: RACER Staff | 4 hours ago
“I look at a photo or a trophy today, and you know what? It’s more than a memory. I get the feeling. I can hear it. Those engines, those sounds, they are my song. Stock, NASCAR, Formula 1 — they all played a different sound. And I loved them all. And I still do.” – Mario Andretti
---------------------------------------------
Mario, I understand.

It was years ago I was at Sebring shortly after they made two race tracks.

It was dark, late at night, and I wanted to see what the new track was like.
After I walked the new track,, I decided to walk the track I had known to be the original track.
--------------------------------------

I remembered my first year there and white short tailed Porsches. Long tailed prototypes had been run at Daytona 24 hours
only a few weeks before.

I remember the first time I saw disc brakes so hot that they were glowing red, almost yellow as the cars went by.

I remember one night when the sky to the North was lit up and I thought it was some kind of storm, but later learned
that the Air Force did night time bombing runs in Avon Park, and the whole Northern Sky was lit up.

I could faintly hear the sounds of the cars from the days when they raced in T-shirts, no roll bars, no guard rails, with telephone poles right next to the infield pavement.

One year I saw the original Grand Sport Corvettes......dark Sunoco Blue with Yellow side exhaust pipes......I thought how hokey it looked with yellow
side pipes.......before I knew that 12 hours of bare flames traveling down the 4 inch pipes was so hot that the steel changed to yellow on it's own
......and stayed that way.

I remember the year that a red Ferrari street car came blasting the horn, flying down pit road too fast, being late to line up for the start, without regard for the spectators who were walking packed in the roadway. Because of that one rich jerk, Ferrari lost a lot of respect in my eyes.

The Ford GT 40's had to have "luggage space" and the officials used a wooden Coca Cola crate slid into the back end of a cooling
air passage to be the "official suitcase".

Roger Penske's Camaro "won the race, and Porsche was first in class" according to Car and Driver magazine.
I have the poster from that year. I have a lot of Sebring posters, One with the Chaparral, The GT 40's,..................... bunches of them.
That Camaro engine was built by TRACO, Travis and Coons near the Penske race shop. It was a show engine......It had an excellent engine breathing system.

I remember that every year there was less and less spectator area and more and more spectators. Over the years, I acquired a collection of driving lights and headlights from race cars, that found their way onto some of my street cars. I could see first hand when the race cars were inspected, I got a lot of ideas, and my autocross car had ducting from the headlight to the carburetor.
------------------------
I remember when Mark Donohue did not slow down when there was ankle deep water on the course. I thought that was remarkable that when I could barely see,
Mark was still racing. I later figured it out........ As he was driving onto the Runway to head South, he swung wide in the rain, and actually drove BESIDE the runway as he raced South while others couldn't see either, and others had slowed down. Years later when I was racing sailboats, when conditions got really bad and wind was 50 mph, others were surviving.......but I was still racing. I recall one sailboat race when I was out front leading..... and dumped the boat over! I had rigged lines on the boat so I could bring it back up faster........I had drilled holes in the Hobie Cat metal frame so the water would dump out faster and get going again. I caught the pack, and dumped it again!.....brought it up and passed the pack again.... I dumped the boat 5 times in one race, caught and passed them each time and won the race! Like Mark Donohue, I learned that bad conditions are always worse on the other guy.
---------------------------
I saw how the race cars set their suspension alignments. I drove to Jacksonville one Sunday morning and measured every Hobie cat.
I toed my twin hulls slightly in and the boat went faster. I epoxied the frame, made a stainless steel brace and added extra bolts to stop frame flex.
When the wind would spurt, my boat instantly accelerated, while others took out the slack before moving.

I adjusted the rear twin rudders, so my boat would turn quicker and put a little negative camber into those rudders. I could tilt the mast forward and it would accelerate, tilt it back and it had more top speed. Sail it with one rudder out of the water, and it went faster....Tilt the boat onto one hull and it went faster.

I beat the Hobie Cat World Champion 5 times on the same day, and no one had ever done that before me or since then.
------------------------

That night
I could faintly hear the sounds of the cars from the days when they raced in T-shirts, no roll bars, no guard rails, with telephone poles right next to the infield pavement.

As I walked past the pits I could see Team Penske physically pushing the Sunoco Blue, Kirk F White Ferrari at every stop, when it went back out.
Pretty soon every team was pushing their cars as they were accelerating out of the pits.

The sounds of the cars that night were getting louder as I walked past the pits, the voices were getting louder.

The ghosts of Sebring will always be with us.

Mario, I understand..................... Thanks for listening.
-Bob Vail

Default June 20 2020 meeting Starts at 10AM....on a voluntary basis

June 20 meeting Starts at 10AM....a voluntary basis
An item of business is planning a "tour". Day? Place? Would you set it up?
Another item of business is improving the spot where we meet.
--------------------
Vic Piano has stepped up to be Guest Meeting Conductor for the June 20 meeting
Starts at 10AM.
----------------------------------
Milt Roorda has already mounted the Keystone Motor Club sign on the pole next to our meeting spot.
----------------------------------
Some people may arrive early to stuff already trimmed vegetation into plastic bags.

I plan to arrive around 9AM. If anyone wants to help for an hour on a voluntary basis it will be appreciated.
I have extra gloves.
------------------------------
There are also some bottles and cans left by homeless that need to be bagged and taken to the trash can.
There are some smaller exposed roots than need to be bagged and dragged to the trash can.

There are a few ruts and holes to fill.
-----------------------------
If you have some, we can use some plastic bags, the thicker the better or maybe we can double them up.
If people can bring even one 5 gallon bucket of dirt, (or any dirt at all) we can use the dirt to fill in some ruts and holes in the ground to eliminate erosion and/or tripping hazards.

-----------------------
We can also use some small amounts of leftover roundup (if you have any)
to get rid of some leafy vegetation.

Hope I didn't scare you off and I hope to see you at the meeting!
Social distance with us! ..........drive thru, beep and wave! Or back in, raise your hood, and hang out!
-Bob

Default June 20 2020 at The Keystone Motor Club meeting held at Winn Dixie 17649 Gunn Highway

On June 20 2020 at The Keystone Motor Club meeting held at Winn Dixie
17649 Gunn Highway and Van Dyke Road, East side of parking lot.
-------------------------------
A week prior to the meeting, we cleared away some of the underbrush. Thank you to all who helped.
On Meeting day Milt Roorda hauled a lot of it away and placed some temporary meeting signs
on each side of the "notch". That may have encouraged the automotive street turkeys not to fill the
spaces we took...or maybe the stinking armadillo aroma scared them off. Gen Rummy found the
armadillo and tossed it far from our spot, although the aroma lingered a bit. The aroma won't be there
next time thanks to some local turkey buzzards.
-------------------------------
We had acquired sixteen 5 gallon buckets of dirt, for a total of 80, thanks to Attorney Michael Snively of Snively Law. Dirt was spread where bottles, cans, and underbrush once was.
Thanks to Gen Rummy's pickup truck usage and all who helped. There will be a few more
deliveries of dirt filling some ruts at our meeting spot before the August meeting.
4 buckets from Lowes said "Doing it Right".
--------------------------------
Milt Roorda had mounted the Keystone sign that Jan Nelson got permission for, from Winn Dixies manager. It's lit and on a post next to where we hold our meetings. This is approximately what it says:
KEYSTONE MOTOR CLUB
meets every 3rd Saturday
10AM -NOON 813-839-4281
or 813-452-7807
---------------------------
Vic Piano was Guest MC for the meeting (GMC) and joked about proper preparation of road kill armadillo.
Vic also donated some trash bags to the Keystone Motor Club. Bob Vail is temporarily holding the club's trash bags.
Milt and Rosemary Roorda brought a few antique honest-to-gosh metal toys for display on their antique table,
We talked about having a driving tour. Milt and Vic had two types of suggestions.
Maybe the next step would be to plan specifically where to go and add to the ideas/suggestions.
--------------
If anyone has some leftover small amounts of liquid Roundup, the club has a good use for it.
---------------------------
We need someone reliable on a regular basis to call Dick Peterson for meeting notifications. He has no computer usage. I have his number.
Further meeting suggestions are welcome and will be passed on. If you have thoughts, make them known.
Email me, text me, call me or post in the newsletter. We are willing to listen.
----------------------------------------------
The 50/50 drawing was operated by Alan Mevorah and $20 went into the gas tank of Bob Carter's '57 Chevy. lol ...actually Bob Carter donated the $20 back to the club. Thanks, Bob Carter!
----------------------
Hey Bob, thank you for running these nice pics. (sent in member emails) Actually, he donated the 20 bucks back to KMC to help offset some reason expenses.-Alan
----------------------
Thanks for bringing that to my attention.
No one said a word to me and I was not aware of any donation since there were no
expenses and I only got the club's part. I stapled the $20 to the sign-in sheet as well as acknowledged that I was holding it for the club. I also posted in the Keystone newsletter that I was holding it temporarily. This is that post.
-Bob
-----------------------
Bob Vail stapled the $20 to the sign-in list, and will hold it temporarily until we have voted up a treasurer.
(We know where he lives lol )

The roll of 50/50 tickets was given to Rosemary Roorda to hold until the next Keystone meeting on July 18 2020.
----------------------------------------------
Vic Piano is still the keeper of the table and tent for when we need them.
Milt Roorda is the current keeper of the banner.
-----------------------------------------------
I see a trend of a meeting format with:
1.starting with socializing and BS'ing, about cars, then
2.discussing anything/business previously brought up, car events attended, then
3.discussing any fresh ideas/new business currently being brought up, future car events, then
4.Personal Items for sale, trade or Want-to-buy.
5.other commercial companies which members recommend, and as always........buying from Winn Dixie if possible.
If we need to add/delete/rearrange categories, let me know.........If I leave anything out, let me know.
-------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------

Default Developing an alternative communication while you still can

PARLER is the new facebook/twitter/etc. without shadow banning, without censorship,
without holding back your posts, without disappearing posts,if they are not leftist approved, and without facebook jail.
-------------------
You might start asking your friends to send you their email addresses for future use.
-------------------
If Facebook, twitter and others have pulled dirty tricks on people you know and those
people can no longer communicate with you and others, or if they are no longer communicating
with friends of yours and you haven't yet noticed, for your REMAINING electronic friends, you should
get an alternative means to communicate with them.
--------------------
Facebook, etc.'s "algorithm" that deletes your communications will surely start deleting any posts that mention PARLER.
---------------
If twitter, etc can ban communication, hold back and/or eliminate the US president's account, because
a leftist teenager (who had already written several attacks on conservatives) disagreed with him, you need to develop alternative communications before it happens to you, and while you still CAN use your account.

Surge of Florida COVID-19 Cases Postpones Revs Institute Re-opening Even though a "case" is not a death.

EmailNaples, FL — After announcing in mid-June that it planned to re-open July 7, The Revs Institute is postponing its re-opening due to the increased number of COVID-19 cases in Florida. The govt chooses not to mention that cases of the flu FAR outnumbered covid cases.......A "case" is NOT a death and the real science
says that the govt is counting the wrong thing.
Photo: The Revs InstituteIf you haven’t already, you can take an online look at cars in the Miles Collier Collections and also learn more about the extensive library and archives of the museum.

Default Here is some info on the Rally Across America and donating to a Military Charity

Here is some info on the Rally Across America and donating to a Military Charity, Troop Rewards
Hi Bob,
Here is some info on the Rally Across America idea for Keystone Motor Club participation,
Which was mentioned during the June 20 KMC meeting. I’ve contacted the Rally Across America and registered as an Ambassador. They are allegedly sending me a packet of info, etc. (have not received it as yet). I’d like to present the idea to the KMC and test the waters for a level on interest. We could also use some help in structuring a route to travel, etc. It is a multi-purpose endeavor as it will get people out enjoying their cars and donating to a Military Charity, Troop Rewards. We could ask for donations or charge a minimal participation fee to generate funds for the charity. The charity is one of the five charities that I support through my Concours d’Elegance event.

I’ve attached a promo I made and posted on FB and also on my shop forum on the Tampa Racing website. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Best Regards,
Vic Piano

Thanks.

Best Regards,
Vic Piano

Vic,
On July 112019, post #19 of the KMC newsletter, you said you would like to do some tours:

As far as suggestions go, I would like to see the club promote some "driving tours" as events everyone could participate in and enjoy. The club membership is diverse in terms of vehicles, with many different brands represented. This is a positive and a negative situation in that there can be no specific focus on one particular brand. That puts the impetus on the social aspect wherein activities that all members can take part in should be the primary focus. A committee could be set up to explore and arrange Driving Tours to various points of interest (automotive related or not) in the Tampa Bay Area. I would be willing to serve on such a committee, should the membership want to pursue that option.

Best Regards,
Vic Piano

At the June 20 2020 KMC meeting, Milt Roorda had told us about a Model T tour that he went on and he might like to
put on a tour also for KMC members and friends. I would like to hear both of your proposals again. I see no reason that KMC could not do one or more/both tours.
---------------------------
At the upcoming July 18 2020 meeting would be a good time for both of you to propose a tour to the club.
Let's see how many people are interested. Let's see if a tour is do-able as to a pre-planned day and time.
Length and location, starting point, etc. Two tours would be fun. We need to know more.

We will be exploring further the driving tours that were talked about
by Vic and Milt at the June 20 2020 meeting, plus any other old/new business/suggestions brought up by KMC members.
-------------------------
By 30 June we acquired another sixteen 5 gallon buckets of dirt, thanks to Attorney Michael Snively of Snively Law.
Total so far is 80 5 gallon buckets. Thanks to Gen Rummy for truck usage and to all who helped.
Dirt was once again spread at Winn Dixie where bottles, cans, ruts, and underbrush once was. We sprayed Roundup on the vegetation.
