11.8K subscribersI grew up in the 1950s. This video is about how I personally remember what life was like during that time. It is just nostalgia, nothing more. And yes, I did have a Davy Crockett cap!

JMK1998
It was a joy growing up in the 50's, we had nothing, little did we realize that we had everything from the birth of Rock & Roll to playing hide & seek, Cowboys & Indians and we didn't come home until the street lights came on. Who could forget the Saturday morning TV programs in the 50's. I'd go back there forever if I had one wish.

TheTexn
I was born in 1940 and my teen years were the 1950's. Those years prepared me for a life of Heaven on earth. I would not ask it to have been any better, more exciting or more rewarding. I made the best choice in a wife and after 57 years of marriage i am a happy camper. I look forward to tomorrow and what it brings. Yes, I did not see somethings come to pass. However, God had mercy on me by not granting many of my wishes. All is well in my world.

Default My family did not have all kinds of money but we had love, family and friends

Gloria Ann Opperman
I was Blessed to have been born during this era and we did not realize that this would be some of the best things in life! My family did not have all kinds of money but we had love, family and friends! Life was so much simpler then! Not the horrors that plague the world today!

Default I was born in the mid 1960's and those were the best years of my life

MATTHEW PERRIN
I miss very much family values. I was born in the mid 1960's and those were the best years of my life. I would relive that era in time in a heartbeat, only if all my family and friends were there again with me - so extremely much has been lost since then; so sad. ~ Present day is April 28, 2020 In that time I achieved all I ever dreamed of; had it all. Now in this future era of 2020 all of it is gone now: family, friends and the "best of times." Now I find myself wanting to be reunited with everyone who were so special to me back then, since have passed on. I pray now for the day I too can go HOME to HEAVEN and be once more reunited eternally....

Default "The Old Mercedes" A poem. There is a certain amount of responsibility when you look

"The Old Mercedes" A poem.
There is a certain amount of responsibility when you look after a family member.
An Article for the Keystone motor Club

Hemingway said:
There are only two sports, bullfighting and auto racing.

Steve McQueen said:
There is only racing. Everything else is waiting.

I say:
Life is short. There is only a good car and a good woman
and sometimes you are lucky enough to find one of each at the same time.
------------------------------------
Today I thought about you Lillian.

Today I looked at my key ring and I saw an old Mercedes key.
And I thought about Elizabeth.
--------------------
The letter read:
"Her name is Elizabeth and I don't want her to become a parts car.
The signed title will be on the seat next to the keys.
You will need a tow truck."
I didn't need a tow truck. I took the best mechanic with me that I could find.
--------------------
The garage was dimly lit from the single flickering fluorescent light.
In the middle of the garage under the dust and the cobwebs was an old yellow Mercedes. .
When I was younger I had worked on that car. It still smelled the same.

It had real leather seats. Four door sedan. It had vacuum operated door locks, yellow headlights and an electrical cord going into the engine block, the same as the day when it came from a cold European country.
--------------------
To open the hood, Elizabeth stuck her tongue out at you through the grill, and when you pulled it, the hood would release.
Every light worked except the dash lights. It was almost like Elizabeth was saying to me:
"I don't like to drive at night, but don't worry about the instruments. I will always get you back home."
And she always did.
--------------------
I remember that garage. Over the months I had driven back and forth to Lakeland and cleaned and painted the garage walls. I had worked and painted inside the house. I had rebuilt the insides of a square carriage-style gas lamp on a black steel post at one corner of the brick patio.
Sometimes I worked on the car.
-----------------
We had eaten many times on the patio by candle light.
Lillian had the biggest brightest brown eyes I had ever seen.

Upstairs we had snugged up and listened to the frogs in the evenings.
I remember cool breezes blowing through thin curtains and looking up at the moon and the stars.

We fell asleep by candle light.
------------------
At dawn the birds over on the island behind Lowes would awake
and the rising sun would start coming through the side window.

The pillows were always cool and softer at night
The sheets were always crisp..

The bed and the woman was always warmer in the morning as the steam was rising from the water.
-----------------
The turbo diesel fired up and the car ran.

As I drove down the interstate to Tampa in the light rain,
the Michelins were humming and the car felt solid.
------------------
Every time I drive in the rain, I think of the scene from the movie, "A Man and a Woman"
where he is driving to Paris in the rain to meet her train.
And then I start to hear the theme song music playing in my mind.

When they were apart, the movie was in black and white.
When they were together, the movie switched to color.
----------------
The Lake Mirror Classic is coming up again this year.
I need to go there again.

I will be looking for someone. Maybe a young couple.
I need to find someone with bright eyes and a hopeful look.
I need to find a new owner for the old Mercedes.
----------------
----------------

And today?
The car is gone. The girl is gone.
It has been decades since I saw the steam rising on the lake from the upstairs window.

I just now looked at my key ring again.
The key to Elizabeth is still there.

But why is the key still there?
Looking at the Mercedes key triggers memories...........
and because her name was Elizabeth and I didn't want her to become a parts car.

Default Keystone Motor Club Minutes of August 15, 2020 Guest Master of Ceremonies, Vic

Keystone Motor Club Minutes of August 15, 2020

Guest Master of Ceremonies, Vic Piano, welcomed the 11 attendees after all had signed the roster. Rosemary and Milt provided the a/c hospitality in their garage. Thank you! Vic brought a huge box of old Rod and Custom and Trendsetter magazines to share with other members. Carol Prentice brought her famous chocolate brownies and everyone said, “Yummy!”

  • IMG_1323.JPG
    148.4kB
  • In the middle of the meeting it began to rain and all members hurriedly exited the meeting to roll up car windows. There was no old business. Master of Ceremonies, Vic Piano made the suggestion to make it optional to reimburse those who provided treats for our meetings. It was tabled for a later date.

  • IMG_1324.JPG
    168kB
  • The new fresh business was a suggestion for a next year travel tour. Many clubs charge $100 per person for a money raiser, but Vic suggested that a $25 limit might be more affordable to our members. The Traveling car show was postponed until a later date.
Sharing personal items for sale or items that members wanted to buy was interesting. Three members were wearig hearing aids and Vic said he was thinking about acquiring a pair, so this is a sample of conversation. One member had a friend who had a 1957 Chevy for sale. Another member needed a carburetor for a 1974 Super Beetle. Anyone want any more car magazines? Other members can also bring some magazines to recycle among members.Hi Bob. We missed some people at the meeting. You’ll get an official minutes but yes we’re meeting in September at Winn-Dixie. Good thinking. . Even though it was only a 15% chance of rain today it literally poured right in the middle of the meeting time. So it was good we were inside rather than outside. The winner of 50-50 donated $8 to the club.
See u next time...... Alan
----------------
The 50-50 raffle was operated by Alan Mevorah and won by Jeanne Montgomery. Afterward she contributed $8 to our $27 balance in the treasury, making a total of $35. Thank you Jeanne! ....and thank you to all who participated. Bob Vail is temporarily holding the $35. This is the public announcement in post #259
--------------------------
Our next meeting is at Winn Dixie on Sept. 19, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.
17649 Gunn Highway and Van Dyke Road, East side of parking lot "notch" next to our sign.
Social distance with us, Drive through and blow your horn, or back in, open your hood and hang out
for a bit. We are outdoors and masks will be optional with no judgements. We may set up the tent
for some shade.

Meeting adjourned.
Thanks to Gen Rummy for these minutes, pictures, and some snacking food.

  • Hi, I’d love to get your newsletter and info on the driving tours planned. I’m in Madeira Beach just outside of StPete.... I’m not able to come this weekend due to previous engagements, I used to do a lot of Road Rallies when I lived in NY before moving here. I only used the “reply” function! Hope to join your group for some fun drives ( as hard as that is to do down here 🤦‍♂️) LJ

  • I'm from Tampa so I know it like the back of my hand. I used to race everywhere in Tampa, laurel street, 84 lumber, cover bros, Tyson road, gandy, causeway etc lol. I had a blue fd rx-7 with a T72 fully built. Hre wheels etc. Ran with a blue supra and a white supra.
Now i have bikes and don't live in Tampa anymore but would love to ride down and check out some cars. Are motorcycles welcome?-Mike Delaby

  • Mike, We have driven some of the same streets. I live near Gandy/Tyson etc. near MacDill AFB. I'm more of a road course guy.... around Patterson Road in Hillsborough County.
I rode a Ducati and knew Keith Code back in the day before he became famous
    with his Superbike School.
Bikes are always welcome at our Keystone Motor Club car meets.

The best performance scene these days is at Quaker Steak and Lube on 49th street in Pinellas County. Bikes on Wednesday night sometimes hit 1,000 or more, and Angela's car shows are monthly on Saturdays.....plus ACE Cafe in Orlando almost every night (across I-4 from Amway Center) ACE Bike Night is Wednesday.
    ----------------------------
Times have changed. These days I drive a Dodge Charger with SXT suspension..
...Keystone Motor Club has mostly become rod and classic drivers and collectors.

There are plenty of Cars at a 2nd Saturday free breakfast at Insty Tune near Dale Mabry and Erhlich Road. 7AM-11AM
