Gentle reminder: meet at Winn Dixie 17 October 2020 plus women of Keystone (WOK)
Sept meeting 2020 Pictures Ed Montgomery, Alan Mevorah, Gen Rummy, Jan Nelson, Vic Piano, Chris Monduori, Kyle Nett, Victor Conte, John Case,
-------------------------
Lots of new and exciting changes are being made for our October 17th, KMC meeting. First of all, every car will be received with a checkered flag as you drive to the meeting area and pass the finish line. The next improvement, we now have is a welcoming table, to sign in, get a treat or drink of ice water, and get your 50-50- ticket for $1. Cruise in at 10AM. Then at exactly 11:00 a.m. we will have a short informative business meeting, then all ticket holders will get a chance to win one of the many Halloween prizes before the 50-50 drawing for cold hard cash! Bring your own chairs to relax in the shade while visiting with other car enthusiasts.

WOK, the Women Of Keystone, will be telling their favorite Halloween stories, wearing a crazy hat, or showing off this year's Trick or Treat costume. What fun!

One interesting project for new business is to make a written record of the history of KMC which started in 2012. What do you think of that? Be ready to be interviewed for your story or fill out a "homework" sheet for the next meeting.

The fliers presented at the last meeting were a huge success at the Garage One Car Show on Anderson Road back on Oct. 3rd. About 24 fliers were given out with half responding that they would like to attend. Don't you just love visitors!

Default What we did on October 17, unofficially called the Keystone Car club Halloween Party

What we did on October 17 2020, unofficially called the Keystone Motor Club Halloween Party.
Pictures will be on the way soon.......

-----------------------------------
We had a visit from Paul Figoni and the Friday Night Cruisers, which I had begun to think of as
the Let's Roll Car Club...since at the end of all the notices I get from them, it always says:
"Let's Roll!"
This is our email exchange:

Paul,
Your Pontiac looked Good....
You and your friends are welcome at any of The Keystone Motor Club meets.
We are having chili and Empanados on November 21.
For high octane, bring your own hot sauce....
----------------------------
I did not get her name or kind of car, but one of your female members
won two door prizes and $25 on Saturday 17 October at Winn Dixie.
----------------------------
Seeing how you can gather a large group of car enthusiasts for a cruise,
If you ever decide to form a cruising car club, a great name would be the
Lets Roll Car Club.-Bob lol
---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------
Paul's reply:

Thanks Bob,
I was nice to be part of your monthly event and share the Keystone CC time. I'm sorry we couldn't park in your area, but when I got there I realized there was not enough space for us in your designated area. We all had a great time! Thank you for sharing, and allowing me to speak at your event and sharing info about our shows.

I do not have info on who won the money and prizes. We are unofficially called "The Friday Night Cruisers", but it's more of a network than a club. I did start a local car group in my subdivision called "Stagecoach", called "The Stagecoach Posse". Anyway, keep up the good work... and keep on cruisin'.

Regards,
Paul Figoni

Default What we did on October 17 2020, unofficially called the Keystone Motor Club Halloween

What we did on October 17 2020, unofficially called the Keystone Motor Club Halloween Party.
and the October fun event........Pictures will be on the way soon.......this page is going into our KMC history and our newsletter.

The Highly Informal, Strictly Voluntary Keystone Motor Club newsletter has over 14,000 views:
WE are the car scene!
click: https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/e...or-club-5.html
-------------------
To continue getting meeting notices and photos, it is a good idea to periodically sign in at a KMC car club meeting, or to say HI ! in the newsletter, or send me an email, so that we know you are still interested. And if your interest goes away, just tell us "Get me out of those meeting notices!" and it will happen. lol
----------------
On October 17 2020 The KMC 3rd Saturday meeting was at 17649 Gunn Hwy and Van Dyke Road 33556 in the Winn Dixie parking lot. 10AM till Noon...At the East side "notch" of the parking lot. We were joined by the Friday Night Cruisers car club and some new people.
----------------
Raise your hand if you crossed the finish line with a racing checkered flag! What a fun way to begin our “meet and greet”. The new welcome table provided by the W.O.K –Women of Keystone is really taking shape as a gathering place for information and ticket sales. Of course, it being our Halloween party, we only had one witch stirring up trouble with a bull-horn, at that!

We shot some car BS for about an hour. There were some new people with cars which we had not seen. Milt Roorda arrived early and set out signs at our meet spot by the road. Milt also had on display a broken radius rod from his car.
He is prepping his model T for a multi-day vintage Ford rally and discovered the break from the pre-tour checklist. That checklist is VERY Valuable, and I hope he sends me a copy.
-----------------
Following the October 17 meeting, Milt is retaining the signs for the club.
Gen Rummy is holding our roll of raffle tickets.
We are still looking for our official table, tent and banner....check your garage, please.
----------------
Meeting attendees----------------and car attendees ---------October 17 2020 sign in order:
Gen Rummy..............................2005 Honda CRV, 8,000 original miles
Vic Piano..................................1939 Lincoln Zephyr convertible club coupe
Joe Avanzato............................Aluminum Bodied 2007 Jaguar
Deidrich Dierks.........................'98 Dodge Viper RT-10
Steve Gibson............................Red '57 Chevy, with drive-in car hop display
Barry Humphrey.......................'79 MGB...great engine detailing
Gabriel Prieto...........................'78 White 911 SC, special exhaust
Buddy Rawls.............................Mustang
Jamey Rawls............................Mustang
John Hotaling...........................'99 Porsche Boxter
Jim Black ................................'06 XLR
Alan Mevorah............................Avanti/Chevy
Keith Mevorah..........................'40's vintage Military Harley Davidson
Victor Conte..............................1980 Corvette and pit bull "Rocco" to guard it
Earl and Debbie Baker...............'83 Mercedes 380 SL Convertible

Milt Roorda................................a vintage red Ford "station wagon"
Tom Morookian.........................'36 Ford Street Rod
Bob Vail....................................Dodge Charger SXT
Robert Norman.........................
Dave Pinault.............................
The Friday Night Cruisers car Club
And a few car folks which I did not get signed in....let me know if you were one of them

Not all cars were matched with their (sign-in sheet) owners...but I will get better at this.
More info on your car is welcome.Tell me what you drove over in, write it on the sign-in sheet,
or email me.

Comments from the sign in sheet:
It's another Great Day!
Happy Halloween Party!
My cars are paid for!
Great Show, Great People!
-------------------------------------------

Ice, drinks plus some snacks came from Gen Rummy, who also flagged cars in with checkered flags as they arrived, handled the greeting, sign-ins, and the WOK (women of Keystone). Gen had typed up a prototype notice for attendees to look over and make suggestions. The notices of our upcoming meetings will be placed on car seats at other car shows and car meets......for those clubs which are still in business.
----------------
This is an acknowledgement that we helped set the record of 412 cars at the Veterans AMC on the first Saturday of October. And further.....There are 119 photos of cars and people at the 2nd Saturday Breakfast at Insty Tune and some pictures are of our members. CLICK: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/owdkfae5m37fh5q/AABgTMWrlnC9Vxlo8ZGYxr6Da?dl=0
------------------------
At exactly 11:00 a.m. We had a short informative business meeting, then 12 raffle prizes were given out as “trick or treats” for our informal Halloween party. The winner of the 50/50 received $25 from Alan, our ticket winning guy. We now have $76 dollars in our unofficial treasury. Our thanks to everyone that bought a ticket. This is the public acknowlegement in newsletter post #294 that Bob Vail is holding the $76

Paul Figoni was introduced and told us about the Friday Night Cruisers, and some upcoming events. including the Culvers Friday Night Cruisein across from Westfield Citrus Park Mall.
-----------------
Vic Piano was our Guest Master of Ceremonies.
It was interesting to see Vic's crowd-drawing V12 1939 flathead a second time, (I never knew there was a V12 flathead) with it's fabricated prototype PVC valve,....and to learn that the glass jar (it really was glass) on the firewall........... was filled with Marvel Mystery Oil and plumbed to the carb spacer.

Why? An overhead valve engine has the valves upside down compared to a modern V8, and when stock, some smoke comes out at startup and again at shut down because of the oiling system. V8's have oil naturally draining down hill so modern V8's are always oiled.
-----------------
Things were a little busy....Not too many people took the history survey or the quiz to fill out, but we have our next meetings to try again.
------------------
The 50-50 was operated by Alan Mevorah. Alan brought his Avanti/Chevy and his son Keith rode a '40's Motorcycle. Two door prizes and $25 was won by a Lady from the Friday Night Cruisers car club. $26 goes into the KMC treasury. This is the public acknowledgement at post # 294 in the Keystone newsletter: Bob is voluntarily holding the total amount of $76 for the club.
----------------
Pictures from October 17 will be emailed out in a few days. We may have found a volunteer to take pictures at future meetings and send them in for the newsletter. Jim Bradley brought his daughter Isabella.....who has a couple cars of her own and who volunteered her picture-taking abilities.
--------------
Should we be adding more advance notices to our meetings as a planning tool?

Advance notice:
A British car club is holding a New Years day tour JAN 1 2021 along the beaches of Pinellas County with lunch at a restaurant next to the Gulf somewhere around New Port Richey. As we get closer to New Years Day, we may look into joining and touring with them without interfering, since it is their event and they are organizing it. There will be some great photo ops and a great place for lunch.
At least it was when I went with them last time.
-----------------
Advance notice:
Coming on November 21 there will be some donated free chili and one member volunteered to make some Empanadas. We missed having her sign in on the attendance sheet and If she doesn't email to my business card address, I don't know how to contact her. She has a young son who is excited about cars.
We have acquired a separate table for food, as Door prizes may become a regular meeting feature.
We have already gathered a bunch of Thanksgiving door prizes and don't forget the cold hard cash for the 50/50 final drawing. Some lucky person will be getting the pot. Will it be you? See you all on Nov. 21 with your lawn chairs for another fun car show. There's something for everyone. See you then.

Looking forward to the November 21, car meeting. We are cooking up a huge crock pot of Gen's famous contest winning chili for about 24 people or so. We will start serving at 10:00 a.m. when cooked the hottest, and will serve chili and oyster crackers while it lasts. So, be sure to be early or at least prompt for your bowl of scrumptous delight!
----------------
The November 3rd Saturday KMC meeting is November 21.2020.
Social distance with us, drive through and beep your horn, or back in, open your hood
and hang out for a while.

Happy Halloween!

If life wasn't scary enough this time of year,
this is probably my favorite “Rat Rod.” It is so
authentic that it is cute. Don't you think?
Well, the countdown to Halloween has begun
and the stores are full of children picking out the
images they wish to be for one night. With so
many shut-downs in the area, I wonder what
many of the “Trick and Treaters” will be doing?
I'm thinking of being a “couch potato” and just
watch my favorite Saturday night TV shows. I
bought some chocolate Snickers bars and just
now noticed that the package is getting empty.
Wonder how that happened?
Other news, I'm doing good here and wishing
you a happy ending to October and a great
beginning to November. Are we all thankful
for that? Gen Rummy at Veterans 24 Car Meet.

Default History of Hemmings motor News Old Standard Auto Parts

History of Hemmings motor News

Old Standard Auto Parts

From the birth of Hemmings through today

By Kellen Olshefski

Hemmings: it’s perhaps one of the most recognizable names in the automotive collector world. Best known for its classified advertising sections, the monthly publication branded as Hemmings Motor News is not only the oldest of its kind but the largest as well, selling 215,000-plus copies every month. From its humble beginnings in Quincy, Illinois, to its current state as a multiple publication entity based out of Bennington, Vermont, the history of Hemmings actually traces back to a company formed years before the publication ever hit the stand: Standard Auto Parts. And now, the current owners, Chuck and Diane Bos, are prepared to bring a selection of old parts, signs and collectible items—all with ties to the storied Standard Auto Parts and Hemmings history—to Mecum’s timed online auction platform, Mecum On Time, with the auction to begin closing on September 19.

When the U.S. entered World War II in 1941 following the attack on Pearl Harbor, American industry was profoundly affected, as everything and anything deemed critical to the war effort was subsequently designated by the government as such. Gasoline and rubber were suddenly being rationed, and with steel being redirected toward wartime machinery, the production of automobiles almost completely ceased. Chrysler was building airplane fuselages; General Motors was producing airplane engines, firearms, trucks and tanks; and Ford was rolling a B-24 Liberator long-range bomber off its Willow Run assembly line every 63 minutes.

According to a report by PBS, more than 3 million cars were produced in the U.S. in the year leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Throughout the duration of World War II, however, just 139 automobiles were built by American manufacturers.
Ernie HemmingsFor Americans, the halt in automobile production meant there was a greater need than ever to keep older cars on the road beyond their normally useful life, which translated to an increase in demand for what were previously considered obsolete parts. In the years prior to World War II, while unused old parts had in many cases been simply discarded once they were deemed outdated, many family owned and smaller auto parts stores of the time would merely move the obsolete parts from front and center to either the back of the shelf or the back of the store. Standard Auto Parts of Quincy, Illinois, founded by G.E. Hemmings in 1923, was among the establishments that followed this practice of saving old parts over the years, and as such, the company soon made a name for itself as the place to find whatever it might be that one needed to keep that old car on the road.

However, just as the war came to an end, so too did the halt to automobile production and the dire need for old car parts. By the time G.E. Hemmings’ son, Ernie Hemmings, returned from Korea in the early 1950s, the automobile industry had rebounded from World War II; new cars were plentiful, and the demand for old, obsolete parts had slowed to a trickle. But, just as innovative businessmen do, Ernie Hemmings found the silver lining and a way to make use of those seemingly outmoded old parts.

By advertising some of the parts collecting dust at the back of the shelf within the day’s few old car publications, Ernie Hemmings discovered that there was indeed still a strong market in search of the old stock. Seeing the potential in print, Ernie Hemmings eventually decided to begin publishing his very own “little paper,” which he dubbed The Hemmings Motor News. Volume 1, Issue 1 of Ernie Hemmings’ publication was released in January 1954, and as circulation of the magazine continued to grow and old store stock was sold, Standard Auto Parts emerged as a mail-order Model T and Model A parts supplier.
Ford Model T 1917A year prior to the magazine’s release, a man named Ron Cloat and his father, Fred, stopped in at the Standard Auto Parts storefront to purchase parts for a Model T they were restoring. Striking conversation, Ernie Hemmings told the pair of his plans to start his own magazine, and Ron, in a show of support, gave Ernie 50 cents, making Ron the sixth paid subscriber to The Hemmings Motor News. Cloat’s involvement wouldn’t end there, however, as he was destined to become a much bigger part of Standard Auto Parts history.

Throughout the years, Ron continued to do business with Ernie Hemmings, and while Ernie had sold the Hemmings Motor News publication to the late publisher Terry Ehrich and his partners in 1968, when he was ready to sell Standard Auto Parts in 1988, it was Cloat who stepped up as the interested buyer. Ron and Jane Cloat, who also ran a Model A restoration shop in Peoria, Illinois, would go on to run the shop for the next 20 years, continuing to serve the classic car market just as the Hemmings had since 1923.

Ron Cloat, who had retired from a career as a sheet metal worker, often traveled from swap meet to swap meet around the region with his van and trailer to sell parts under the Standard Auto Parts name, and when he wasn’t traveling, he was manufacturing his very own headlight visors. Those headlight visors—built with polished stainless steel and marbles for the “jewel” and using a handmade specialized tooling—gained popularity among enthusiasts, with numerous parts businesses like Mike’s “A” Ford-Able Parts, Snyder’s Antique Auto Parts, MACs Antique Auto Parts and more all still selling the jeweled visors today.
Meanwhile, auto enthusiasts Chuck and Diane Bos of Hillsdale, Illinois, came to know of Standard Auto Parts while restoring Model As they had purchased in 2005 and 2008, as the previous owner of those cars had highly recommended Standard Auto Parts. “I started doing business with them,” Chuck Bos said. “They were real on the ball and seemed to have a good inventory. Jane handled most of the orders, but if I had questions on something, she’d put Ron on the phone, and he was extremely knowledgeable in Model As.”

In the spring of 2008, Bos said that Ron Cloat reached out to him, asking if he would be interested in purchasing Standard Auto Parts and his jeweled visor business. “We talked back and forth, and I guess I don’t know why I decided to pursue it, but he put together an inventory and we met several times,” Chuck Bos said. As one thing led to another in the time that followed, the Cloats officially sold Standard Auto Parts and their visor business to Chuck and Diane Bos after 20 years of ownership, with Ron continuing his long association with the shop as a consultant, customer and friend to the Bos family.

From used and reproduction parts to engine blocks and sheet metal, Chuck Bos said he moved the inventory up to Hillsdale to carry the business into a new generation under the Old Standard Auto Parts name. While the business is still running today, serving dedicated local enthusiasts who have been customers for years, the company has scaled back on restocking its inventory, as Bos is now looking to move on to other pursuits. “So, that’s kind of, in a nutshell, from beginning to end,” he said.

Now looking to sell off some of the items from the nearly century-old business, Chuck Bos is preparing to bring a slew of reproduction and used parts to Mecum’s On Time platform, along with a couple of items tied to Ernie Hemmings—such as Ernie Hemmings’ sign and what is believed to be the final catalog produced by Ernie Hemmings—and the entirety of the headlight visor business, including the original set Ron Cloat based his design on, the tooling, raw material and inventory on hand.
