Default 4 miracles and a '69 Nova An article for the Keystone Motor Club

4 miracles and a '69 Nova
An article for the Keystone Motor Club

If you never had car trouble, don't read this.
If your car always got you home every time, then we are blood brothers.
-------------------
When I last saw the '69 Nova it had 440 thousand miles. A proud father had driven from Ohio with his 5 kids, his wife and a huge flat bed trailer. He SAID he was getting it as a project for him and his youngest daughter to work on for her first car.

I love it when folks spend time with their kids. I also recognized the gleam in his eye that said: "I want to drive this car just the way it is!" I practically gave him the car, plus over 20 rims, extra body panels, boxes of parts with Chevrolet part numbers, plus an envelope of coupons to Burger King, Wendy's and McDonalds, and told him : "On your way back home, dinner's on me."
--------------------
My Nova was a rolling test bed. Stock car racer Smokey Yunick was my hero and I loved that car.
I had stretched the nose forward 8 inches, and lowered the nose by 8 inches. I had made skeletonized aerodynamic "sorta" stock-looking screened bumpers, an aluminum hood, aluminum door skins, and from the beltline downward I had replaced the steel with aluminum.....and then hid the seam between the steel and aluminum underneath the side trim. My Nova weighed half way between a stock Nova and the Corvettes that raced at LeMans.
---------------------
It had a full belly pan to get me better gas mileage even though I had one gas tank under the trunk floor with the gas filler behind the license plate...... which was partly blocked by a trailer hitch and a very large tennis ball hitch cover..... and a second gas tank for a back seat that was filled by two quick-fill side gas fillers. It had two levered ball valves and plumbing to switch gas tanks while underway. Three quick fill gas caps saved 15 minutes at gas stops and could be fueled from either side at any pump. The side gas fillers were flush with the plastic windows.

I had put on four wheel Cadillac discs from the "Rolls Royce"-looking front wheel drive Cadillac
with Oldsmobile/GMC calipers and used a 68-69 NON POWER Corvette disc brake Master cylinder. That was the only year when Corvette had a MANUAL disc brake system and no brake booster. The Nova never had brake fade again.
---------------------
It had heavy duty sway bars front and rear with Adco stock car front springs and Landrum racing leaf springs on the rear with a full set of poly graphite suspension bushings all around. Monroe air shocks with the air valve behind the license tag allowed me to tune the rear ride height for better aerodynamics on the Interstate and level it out if I had something heavy in the car.

Headers and the Corvette style side exhaust had sound dissipators to stop my eardrums vibrating when I drove next to an Interstate bridge.
---------------------
---------------------
I saved horsepower by using electric radiator fans and there were two 44 ounce auxiliary engine coolers behind the headlights.
I had made self-dimming headlights before Porsche and Ford got theirs. At a certain distance out and a certain distance over, the headlights went totally blank. I drilled out the driving light reflectors for extra quartz halogen bulbs. At one toll booth on the Polk County Parkway, the green lights came on and the gate lifted as I pulled up....without a sun pass.

A Deputy Sheriff once told me... when stopped... that I had no headlights....until I "cut them on"......he then quoted me every headlight rule in the statute book and then he said: "Never mind". I loved that car.
---------------------
---------------------
I was coming back from Atlanta and the Nova sputtered like it was running out of gas. I coasted to the exit, dumped my spare gas can and filled up at the first gas station. It took almost no gas! ....and then I saw the red alternator light on the dash.
---------------------
I made it to a Discount Auto Parts in the last 15 minutes before closing and asked for an alternator test. When we both heard the grinding sound we both knew the problem. Even with an alternator cut out switch, my alternator had died a premature death. As I was wiring and bolting a new alternator back on in the darkened parking lot, I heard thunder and saw the lightning.
I started asking God to hold the rain off me until the car was "ready to drive away."
Most of the time that works. lol
----------------------
I don't go to church but God was about to show me a miracle.

It started drizzling and the rain was getting progressively worse, I grabbed my tools, threw them on the car floor, and dripping wet, I cranked the car. When it started I took that as a psychic message from God that the car was "ready to drive away".
----------------------
I pulled onto the Interstate with the alternator light shining in my face.
I'm no religious guy, but I asked God to keep my car running until it was back in my driveway.
---------------------
I cheated. The car was running, but I cut off the lights to save the battery, and I was drafting the tractor trailers, but when passing a rest stop I pulled up beside the trailer and cut the lights back on in case the highway patrol was in there, and then cut the lights back off again. The alternator light never went off. For hours the light did not go off.
-----------------------
I made it back to Tampa and driving through town I had no lights, and was still asking to keep my car running until it was back in my own driveway. Downtown, the cops were busy on a side street and didn't see me. Miraculously I caught all the traffic lights green which never happens. There was no traffic on Bayshore which never happens. Then as I made the final turn onto my street, the engine died.....and I coasted into my own driveway, while giving thanks for keeping me invisible to the cops.
-----------------------
-----------------------
Next morning as if it never happened, surprise! The car started with help from my battery charger. At Ralph's Generator shop on Nebraska Avenue, he said: I don't believe this! You have a break in the wire somewhere between the firewall and the front bumper."
-----------------------
I did not have a broken wire. I found a connector that had a quarter inch
burned away between each piece.
There is no way in hell that 12 volts could have jumped across that gap.....
but maybe in Heaven .......
----------------------
I replaced and sealed that burned connector in plastic and tossed it into the glove compartment.
I don't even go to church. But that was the first miracle....with an artifact to be kept forever in the glove compartment. I'm sure the scientists among us will have an explanation.........

There were more miracles...but that's a story for another day.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Default Muriatic acid best carb cleaner...directions

Ronnie Henson
8.63K subscribersSorry!, for the mirrored image, was done on my phone. How to clean your Holley or any other aluminum carburetor with 33% Muriatic acid without spending a ton of money with great results.

This process is NOT compatible with all carbs. Do a small test piece first to make sure your carb is compatible with this method. Note: This process will not work with pot metal! (It will turn black) Make sure that when you rebuild your carb after

this process you spray a little WD-40 on all the bolts, threads and steel parts before installing them. Good luck! I will be posting up my L79 (327) .030 over SBC 11:03.1 CR 331 CI build soon, using this rebuilt Holley 750.

Please hit the like and subscribe button, Thanks! Safety notes: 1. Eye protection 2. Rubber gloves 3. Well ventilated area 4. Dispose of the used acid solution in the toilet, keeps the pipes clean.

Default What Keystone Motor Club Did on April 17 2021

The April 17th Car show was the most fun ever.
The “Cackleberry Party” that weekend at the Keystone Motor Club was an outstanding success.
There were cackleberries everywhere and lots of eager members to play, "Let's make a deal!" The Women of Keystone not only provided hot coffee and tea, but pastries were also on the serving table, provided by Renee Martoglio along with all sorts of other candies and treats. Thanks to Ed and Jean Montgomery for operating the 50/50. The winner of the guaranteed $25 payout got $50 instead! We also gave away a dual power air compresssor as the grand prize.

With close to 50 cars signed in, and about 75 people visiting and having fun. Many prizes including the “Let's Make a Deal” trophies, (winners could choose the Gold and Red Trophy or the Red and Gold Trophy.......lol.....) and the 50/50 drawing had $50 in it. Fifty seemed to be the lucky number. Nitish Rele delivered copies of Motoring Tampa Bay Magazine. Keystone Motor Club is featured on page 8. Extra copies are on the WOK/Women of Keystone's table.

We paid Tribute to Herb and Carol Wagner with the first of the Memorial
Car shows. We read a tribute and history of their '63 Chevy Impala Convertible, named "Sunshine". The car was on the grounds for all to see. Jim Filcheck drove over his '69 Chevelle and won Best of Show. Wesley Shallow drove his '69 Camaro over and won Best Of Show.

Keystone has some 3 foot trophies donated by Keystone Motor Club Founders Sam and Carol Prentice. for when we have 60 or more cars.
