Default Chromosomes and Old MGs by D. Randy Riggs Chromosomes and Old MGs by D. Randy Riggs

Chromosomes and Old MGs

by D. Randy Riggs Chromosomes and Old MGs by D. Randy Riggs from Vintage Motorsport issue 2003.2 – March/April 2003

Chromosomes?
Did my father give it to me? Was it someone on my mother’s side of the family? Is it passed down through generations like freckles? Did my Mom have “one for the road” during her pregnancy? Just what is it that makes some of us develop a lust for automobiles? Unscientific studies recently bandied about, point to a possible aberrant gene which creates a chromosomal defect that early on manifests itself in the subject as tilting head syndrome—where the head tilts in the direction of fuel vapors or the sound of open headers.

For me, the syndrome began when I was just a toddler, standing tall in the front seat of our ’49 Cadillac fastback (back when America was America, we didn’t need no stinking child seats), telling my Mom what make of car we were following. She says that I knew names of cars and trucks before I knew names of people.

In elementary school, I was always in trouble for drawing cars instead of practicing my penmanship. And in 4th grade I was dinged again for bringing Dinky Toys to class and zooming them around inside my desk when Mr. Hughes was teaching us about the Lenne Lenape Indians. For punishment, he kept me after class for a forced read of his prized collection of National Geographic magazines but discovered at the end of my “sentence” that I had torn all the car advertisements out of every issue to take home. He never kept me after class again.

There were other ominous signs as I grew older. Attending races at the Trenton and Langhorne Speedways near where I grew up, the aroma of hot Castor Oil on race days was a high I had never experienced. So, to get the same high at home, I bought Castor oil at the drug store and poured some in the fuel tank of our riding mover. Presto! Same wonderful aroma, but unfortunately minus the deep growl of an Offy at full song. Dad never had to tell me to mow the lawn again.

It got worse. My first top-down drive with Pop in his new ’56 Corvette on a warm summer evening put me right over the edge. At that moment in time, you could’ve shoved a dipstick down my throat and come up with oil on its tip.

But of course, like heroin, I needed more. In time, I talked an older Vette-owning cousin into using me as his navigator in local sports car rallies, then began “borrowing” the family car at age 12 for short cruises while my parents were away. The rural area where we lived had but one cop on duty, so the likelihood of our version of Barney Fife spotting me was extremely low risk.

The signs should have been clear to anyone paying attention. I mean, there I was entering my teenage years sporting a record of illegal nighttime road trips, and it was public that I brewed up mixtures of hi-test and castor oil in our garage every time the lawn needed a trim.

If I’d known where to buy it, Nitromethane would’ve been next. There were also accumulated stacks of incriminating evidence in the form of Road & Track and Sports Cars Illustrated magazines that were piled high in my closet. Let’s not even mention the tubes of glue in my desk and various model kits strewn about my bedroom. At 13, when other kids were buying records, I was buying torque wrenches and sockets.

The ripple effect of all this was that I was headed down that narrow, twisty, oil-spotted road to buying a British sports car.

Thank goodness, no one headed me off down the straight and narrow by seeing to it that I bought something far more sensible, like a run-of-the-mill sedan. Oh, what I would’ve missed.

Instead came my first car, the 1955 MG-TF shown here, which led to a lifetime of sports car adventures, relationships, and interesting and fun people, and in a very round-about way, a career in automotive publishing.

And as for that aberrant gene that caused my permanent chromosomal defect, I am eternally grateful to whomever passed it on.

Default A fun story about a car guys day 16 OCT 2021

Hi Bob, I really enjoyed your Keystone show on Saturday...........My friend Ray and I showed up in the little but trust me, very potent '27 Ford Roadster powered by the iconic slant 6............it was the first time ever for me riding in a T Bucket no Fender type such as his............ I tell you it was a blast oh, it would not be as much fun riding in that vehicle if it didn't have a 4-speed...............

After we left your show we headed down some back roads and picked up I-4 for a short distance to arrive at The Plant City Car Show, Believe It or Not Ray took another trophy there. I treated my friend Ray to a nice lunch and we walked around and saw the cars and then sat in the chairs under some nice shade for a while and then Departed around 6:30 oh, and if you could believe this.......

Then we went back to Dunedin where there is another car gathering at the McDonalds and spend some time there. Talk about a Car Guys day well let me tell you it couldn't have gotten any better.

and I forgot to mention that before arriving at your show we stopped at the paint and body shop which my 1971 duster is being completely restored and Steve the owner told me it would be only one more week until the car is complete, once I get it back it will take some time to reassemble but I am guaranteeing you, you will see it out at your show. Just wanted to share my happiness and tell you about the wonderful day that we had which included showing up at your show!
-AluminateWow!
What a day!

That's the kind of fun story we ALL want to live.
That slant six has definitely got some legendary pulling power.
Ray's '27 Roadster won the Best Of Show Trophy at Keystone.

It's great that he also trophied in Plant City

Thanks for the report on the Duster. It had been a while since we had emailed
and I was hoping that the Duster would be at Keystone one day.

I also found the Dunedin folks to be friendly and laid back on some
of my non-Keystone Saturdays.
I regularly advertise for Dunedin's "Campfire" car meet on my car site through my signature.
https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/e...ml#post9440283

Thank you for sharing your day. I plan to put this into Keystone's internet newsletter
and I thank you for sharing it.
-Bob

Default What we did on OCT 16 2021Keystone Motor Club...It was the most Fun Car Show ever!

What we did on OCT 16 2021Keystone Motor Club...It was the most Fun Car Show ever!
It was the most Fun Car Show ever!
  • We are being overwhelmed with all the cars coming in. It was the first time we had to park cars on the grass.
We need a bigger parking lot.
I'm willing to listen to suggestions, if attendees will email me. Were you there?

    Photo from Dan/Gail, Team Holsen
  •
  • First, a confession:
Two of the boxed door prizes had 1/4 inch of dust from 50 years of storage.
Dust had been knocked off the box outside. But the inside was not cleaned up at all. You might look up the value of those dusty items before you toss them out.

The boxed items were only door prizes, along with Car Wash Soap,
a 5 gallon Car Wash Bucket, Tire Shine, and a round tire gauge.
It was winners choice as to what you won when we drew your name.

A Collectible Large, Tall, One-of-a-kind Beige Ceramic Chalice-styled "Cup" with a large poinsettia carved opening into the side for the included candle to shine through includes a large oval-shaped table cloth which goes with the ceramic cup, and can be claimed by the winner if you email me. I have to wash the table cloth before you can have it.

It's at least 50 years old, and has to be washed by hand. Please be careful with the cup, I was unable to look up the value on the internet. You may have the only unbroken one still in existence.

Except for the door prize collectibles,
We paid out $77 to the winner for the 50/50 raffle. Things were pretty hectic.
Thank you to Dick Peterson for operating the 50/50.

The brand new, original box, original plastic bag, unassembled Tony Stewart collectible Shop Light/Desk Light...the last one that's not in a museum was the grand prize, and may be worth more than the $77 in the 50/50. It's not listed on the internet that I could find.

There were two winners for Best of Show in the Herb and Carol Wagner Memorial Car Show:
Thomas Leo's '68 Chevy 210 won Best of Show and a 2 foot trophy.
Ray Crowley's '27 Ford Roadster won Best of show and a 2 foot trophy.

Keystone Founders Sam and Carol Prentice stopped by briefly.
I need to meet with Sam soon. We are being overwhelmed with all the cars coming in. It was the first time we had to park cars on the grass.
We need a bigger parking lot.
I'm willing to listen to suggestions, if attendees will email me. Were you there?

I want to thank Dick, Don, Vic and John, who helped with tent assembly, and thank you also to Deb Rebuck, Danni Wells, and Dick Peterson who helped with disassembly and packing up when it was time to leave. Thanks also to Gen for the use of the pickup truck and the preparation help prior to the Car Show.

Dan and Gail Holsen were both taking a ton of pictures and the best ones are posted: on Keystones Members Group page..

Default "Don't lose this one." An article for the Keystone Motor Club.

"Don't lose this one."
An article for the Keystone Motor Club.

One of the rules of life is that when you buy a new car, the woman always gets the new car
and the guy gets the old one. Any guy who has been married a long time already knows that.
-------------------

I was proud of her.

We always took vacations in September when all the kids had gone back to school,
She loved to visit my mother in North Carolina and see the Blue Ridge Parkway.

In September we had the place to ourselves. Almost.

She had outran a BMW and one other car that morning in my Datsun 510 with the autocross suspension,
up shifting, down shifting and taking the correct lines through the turns.

My God I loved that girl.
When you can find a woman who can really DRIVE, she will usually be a LOT faster than the guys.

Not only could she drive, she could put up with me.

I have a picture of her sitting looking bored in the infield turn one of the road course at Daytona.
All our friends were racers. She was always there for me.

I have a picture of her smiling and sitting on a sign and the picture proves that on that day
we were in love. In the town so named, in North Carolina.
.......Love Population xxxx lol
--------------------------------------------------

Our relationship had started years before that. I had taught her how to shift a manual transmission.
It was in my Bertone bodied Simca, and each time she ground the gears, she felt worse than I did.
We became best friends, and later became married.
---------------------

We had just bought a bright yellow Datsun B210..........for her.

Having seen how I had gutted every car I ever owned, and they all had eventually looked like race cars,
I had gutted them for safety reasons of course......Not necessarily to save weight,
but to remove "inflammable" material. lol

...she said to me: "Don't touch my car."

I saw no need to mention that by then I had already removed the guts from the 5 mile per hour bumper
one day while she was visiting her mother.
-------------------

It was months after our friendly divorce that I locked my keys in my car.
Do I need to say who the one person was that had a spare key?

As she handed over the spare key she smiled and said:
"Don't lose this one."

Don't lose this one? I think I already did.
I lost her when I wanted to become a famous racer instead of a famous husband.

Those words.........arrived a bit late.......I had been becoming a famous racer instead of a famous husband.
All our friends were racers.
She will always drive high performance cars and will never get ripped off on a car repair.
--------------------------

We had done everything together. I worked at Florida Federal Savings every other quarter
and went to USF in between those quarters. After work she would sit in my classes and we
even got her a fake-o student number so she could run programs on USF's computer.

When she said she wanted to take dancing lessons, I thought she would take the classes,
and it would be one more thing to do together. Why not?
We had both gone to SCCA race driving school together.

She went to take dancing lessons and a very handsome fellow went there to find a wife
so he could get his kids back, and they met. I knew the guy. He was a good catch.
He and I both worked for the phone company.
------------------------

She and I drove together early to the court house in her Datsun B210 and we were both upset
when the judge took later arrivals first, as our parking meter was ticking away.
We sat on the same side of the table when we saw the judge.

He said "Linda, why do you want a divorce?"
and she couldn't think of anything!
I leaned over and whispered: Tell him "irreconcilable differences"
I had heard it on TV.

That's not what she said. She said something completely different.

The judge looked at us for a moment then said: "Bob, why do you want a divorce?"
I did not say "irreconcilable differences". I figured that if we agreed, then we would not
be turned down on the divorce. I said word for word what she just said.

The judge gave us the divorce and we got out before the parking meter expired.

He got his kids back. She now had the family that she and I would never have.
They started a successful business, they retired 3 years ago, and had a great life in between.

"Don't lose this one".
I think I never did.
