Default What Keystone Motor Club did on DEC 18 2021

That song from our last days in High School starts to play again in our hearts as well as in our minds...and in my imagination, poodle skirts and all, we are holding hands in a big circle.......

"For all we know, we may never meet again....
Before we go, make this moment sweet again...
A lifetime for some,... tomorrow may never come...
For... all... we... know......"

Back on OCT 16 KMC was blessed with overwhelming success.
That day for the first time we parked in the grass and on both sides of the entrance road.
and we all knew it would be the last time.........................but maybe not..
------------------------------------------------
Because for NOV 20, DEC 18 2021 and JAN 15 2022, we had moved to a bigger location At Fox's Corner; North East corner:
Our thanks to Matlock Homes and Glamorous Kitchens at 16921 Gunn Highway 33556. The topic of conversation THAT day was; 'I think we need a bigger place" and "Next month, I'm getting here at 9:30." A few earliest arrivals beat the uncertainty of Saturday traffic on DEC 18 and got there by 9AM.

Good News! For DEC 18 and future meetings we are moving barricades to the side and opening up more parking area. We need a loaned battery-powered leaf blower to clean leaves away a week or so before the JAN 15 meeting. If you have a leaf blower, email and let me know, please.-Bob

Everyone signing in for the car show got a Keystone Motor Club Christmas present
plus an original song booklet of Gen's car-oriented Christmas Songs.
If you did not get the present and booklet, ask and pick them up at sign-in on Jan 15 2022.
-------------------------
We are having bigger, and nicer trophies each meeting. Chili Cook Off trophies to be presented
on January 15 2022 include a necklace with a Chili Pepper and even the tablecloth has Chili Peppers!
Pics take a moment to download.....

Don Smith won the lighted Christmas Angel collectable. Value was unknown. We could not find it listed anywhere. It probably was the last one. We gave away 3 collectible Snowmen of Ceramic and some Crystal, and a book on Fords. Milt and Rosemary Roorda donated some hand built bird houses for the raffle and set up a display of antique car parts net to their Model T Ford

If we pulled a ticket with your name, you got your choice. We save all donated door prizes for future events. But we gave away the boxes of fresh donuts. LOL

Renee Martoglio assisted with Trophy presentations for the Herb and Carol Wagner Memorial Car Show. Danni Wells drove her '57 Chevy over and operated the 50/50, plus helped with setup and takedown. Deb Rebuck's 2009 Corvette won the
Best of Show Trophy
Anthony Quiroz 1968 Mustang won the Best of Show Gift Certificate.

Gen had gone to Winn Dixie to direct stragglers down to us.
35 people entered the No Entry Fee Car Show, and plenty of people skipped sign-in and
just enjoyed hanging out. We will be opening up more parking for future meetings.

Default Remembering the Great Times ........

Remembering the Great Times ........by D. Randy Riggs

Nostalgic Is What It Is

FromVintage Motorsport issue 09.1-Jan/Feb 2009
Yes, a genuine hunk of Riverside’s Turn 6 asphalt. Photo: D. Randy RiggsWhile no one I know has accused me openly of living in the past, I’m sure a few of my friends might think that I do. There are signs of it everywhere.

I collect old toys by the hundreds, old motorcycles, old photographs, old books. I own an old Morris Minor van, 41 years old. I have saved all my old cameras and assorted odds and ends. I love old trains. I still have the three-foot tall Jerry Mahoney puppet I got for Christmas when I was five years old.

I have every helmet I’ve every owned except for a few that were borrowed and/or stolen. Displayed in my office and garage are new models of “old” cars. Netflix is the way I watch movies, usually old TV series like Combat or Alfred Hitchcock or my recent favorites—film noir from the 1940s and 50s. Until a year or so ago, I vacuumed with a 1959 Electrolux canister because it worked like a champ and reminded me of the day my Dad bought it, when America manufactured just about everything and did it well. How else can you explain a vacuum cleaner that lasted for nearly 50 years?

Topping all of this old nonsense off, I earn my living creating a magazine about motorsport history and old race cars and racing heroes.

But living in the past? Nah! Instead I think of it as being nostalgic. I mean, if I really lived in the past I’d be typing this on an old manual typewriter instead of a Mac G5 and would still be shooting photos with film cameras.

All those old family photos I have are treasures because for me they re-ignite the sense of fun and wonder we had as kids. I was lucky that my Dad had photography as a hobby and consequently shot lots of photos. They are moments frozen in time that if you study long enough, can bring back even more memories, like the finned rear fenders of my grandmother’s ’60 Ford Starliner fastback—Montecarlo Red with a Corinthian White roof—peeking into the corner of one photo I have.

I was 13 when she bought that new Ford and she was 63—a fancy red car for a grandmother. But hardworking she was, a Hungarian immigrant who came to America in 1914, learned English and wanted most to become an American citizen, expecting no handouts. “Katie” worked in a doll factory, cigar factory, cleaned houses and did catering. Her second husband was German and, since neither could speak each other’s native language, they conversed in English. She bought a new car every two years, come hell or high water, and the Starliner was the first she ever let me drive. If I think really hard I can remember its wonderful new car smell. A heavenly scent. Today’s fresh off the assembly line cars smell nothing like they did then, plastic not in the same league as American-made steel finished in fresh lacquer.

Try to find a ’60 Starliner today—they’re just not around, and I’m not quite sure why. Instead, at every old car show, there’s a parade of ’57 Chevy convertibles, always matching numbers of course, and always with the rarest of options. Sure. And what’s with those continental kits the restorers slather on every darn convertible from the 50s? No one with good taste ever put one of those on a car back then and, in fact, we had an expression for the practice that I can’t repeat.

I think my grandma loved that Ford more than any car she ever owned, even more than her step-down ’49 Hudson. I know I’d sure like to stick my head in a Starliner again, sample the Cruise-o-Matic and the purr of that 352 V8.

Yes, photos can bring back those memories, but so can objects. I have a big hunk of Riverside Raceway’s Turn 6 on my shelf, retrieved when they plowed up the old track back in May of 1990. It’s got some white paint on it because it was from the outer edge of the asphalt, and I drilled a hole in the top, mounted a little checkered flag and painted “Riverside Raceway 1957-1990 RIP” on the surface. It’s my little tribute to the track where I raced both motorcycles and Formula Fords. “Normal” people get a quizzical look on their faces when they see it on my shelf, while racers get a big smile when I tell them what it is.

Yes, it’s nostalgia. Much more fun to look at all this stuff instead of watching the news, with the incompetent pompous pinheads in congress and the senate blathering away, making bigger problems out of the ones they’ve already created. I mean, why look at the likes of a Barney Frank or that Illinois governor—who needs a chinstrap for that hair of his—when over there is a number plate that Kenny Roberts signed, a scarred helmet that saved my life and a wonderful photo of Karen and I getting married overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

That’s not living in the past; it’s remembering all the great times, friends and moments that should never be forgotten.

Default Not quitting won a championship..... I was at Road Atlanta the year Dave Heinz won

An article for Keystone Motor Club
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I knew Dave Heinz
and saw him run it in the 24 hours of Daytona. I liked the car's looks and when I designed the jacket patch to be sold at the track that year, I put his car on the jacket patch. I probably have the only one left........on my sports car jacket.

Dave Heinz was a car dealer from Tampa....started with small British
BMC Sprites, Midgets, etc.........then he sold more expensive exotics....moved his dealership to Hillsborough Ave....won the "Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea" race sponsored by Car and Driver Magazine.......Later on, spoofs of the Cannonball Baker were named "Gumball Rallye"

When Dave Heinz passed away from cancer, one of the guys in the shop knew the value and the significance of that trophy and took it home with him..........I don't know what happened to his other trophies..... If anyone knows a Native American Indian named Ed MacDonald, he probably knows more than me.
-----------------------------------------
Not quitting won a championship.....
I was at Road Atlanta the year Dave Heinz won the SCCA National Championship in Formula A.
That car had more power than a human could control. When you floored the gas, the car jumped sideways.....427 fuel injected Chevy V8.........at the halfway point, he was so far behind in 3rd place that the guy next to me said " Dave Heinz should just give up." I said "What for? The other guys could always break".

The cars in first and second place did not break.....

They both spun out......and Dave Heinz drove to a National Championship.
From then on, his stationary and his business logo had a line across the
page left to right and a tiny winged Formula A car at the right edge......

That's when Dave got the Corvette......It was raced all over the country as well as Sebring and Lemans. The huge fiberglass fender flares were made in a small shop on Lauber Way in Drew Park by Rick Jellison.

Dave Heinz once told me that you could win plenty of races. You could win National Championships. You could be one heck of a racer, but until you drive a Corvette, no one knows your name. Once you drive a
Corvette..........EVERYBODY knows your name.-Bob

Default What Keystone Motor Club did on JAN 15 2022

The WOK, Women Of Keystone gave us another great day at KMC January 15.
A Steven Spielburg Production........actually, he may keep on wishing......lol
----------------------
Months ago Danni Wells and Denise Johnson said they wanted to hold a chili cook off. Back when I was married I was partly trained and I know that
when a woman says she wants to do something, it's best to get out of her way.
So I got out of their way.
Danni and Denise get full credit for organizing the cookoff.
----------------------
It was a cold day driving up Gunn Highway to put up some signs and I was overthinking.....as I have sometimes admitted to.... (LOL).....but...

When I passed by Matlock Homes Glamorous Kitchens at Fox's Corners, I saw Denise Johnson unloading and setting up tables. When I got to Winn Dixie, I saw the familiar Red Chevy Belaire
of Mechiel Kopaska and Kurt Kalbath's Firebird and they told me they were getting supplies for the cookoff.

Back at Matlock Homes, people were arriving and signing in. I'm greatful that Tammy Whitlock had arrived and opened the show room. Danni was not only setting things up for the cookoff, she was also selling 50/50 tickets while I was signing people in.

Nitish Rele dropped off copies of Motoring Tampa Bay Magazine. Wayne Platteborze made a donation to Keystone Motor Club. Frank Salerno donated a speaker system for Keystone to use. Can you hear me NOW? Keystone Founders Sam and Carol Prentice stopped in for a visit, Denise Johnson did a live stream video, and Milt Roorda did a drive through with his Model T club. We had free magazines again, and some members donated door prizes.
--------------------
This was the closest chili cookoff ever!
The winner scored 101 points, second was 99 points and third place was 98 points.
1st Place was Mechiel Kopaska.
2nd Place was Gen Rummy.
3rd Place was Danni Wells.

Each entrant got a chili pepper necklace and their choice of trophy.
Mechiel picked out a red trophy to match her red car.I thank the entrants. I thank the unknown score keeper...who I still owe
a chili pepper necklace to,... and I thank all the judges.
We gave half the 50/50 to one randomly drawn judge......in this case the judge got $104.00.

Winners of the Herb and Carol Wagner Memorial Car Show Best Of Show trophy and $25 gift certificate were Nick Barrasso and Ed McGuinness.

We had the Best Chili in town, The Best Cookoff in Town. The Best Car Show in town and people were asking me "When is the next cookoff?"
Well folks, after you tell Danni and Denise thanks for putting this first one on,
you might ask about next year's contest.

Everyone said they had a good time.
And me? I'm greatful that the Women Of Keystone did such a great job....
and that someone saved me the last half of a bowl...... mmmmmm.....It was great!

I thank you and everyone for coming out. It was a great day, and the Best Chili Cookoff in Town!
-Bob

Default If you have any kind of hot rod or classic car you should take a trip similar to this

Article for Keystone Motor Club, by anonymous author,
who has more guts than I do, about a trip I'm reluctant to take in the same kind of car.
-Bob
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update, I made it all the way up to Michigan and back home to Florida.
Our trip was about 2600 miles long. It covered 7 states. In a T- Bucket with a ten gallon gas tank that is roughly 40 gas stops, lol. We spent a total of eight days driving, plus the weekend we spent in Michigan. I only had to stop twice for rain (We got wet several times), and was fortunate to have virtually zero mechanical problems. There were an uncountable number of people honking, waving, taking pictures, and asking questions at the gas stations.

My advice is, if you have any kind of hot rod or classic car you should take a trip similar to this. Make it happen. Find an excuse to go somewhere or visit someone. It was much more fun than hanging out at a car show or making an ice cream run. What an awesome view of America we got to enjoy. I didn’t plan any of my overnight stops ahead of time. When I’d had about enough driving for the day I would just start watching for a decent looking old fashioned motel. Most of those are very affordable, and you can park your car right outside of your room, with a car cover on it. Two of the nights were spent at relatives houses. That made for nice visits and free accommodations.

I drove by myself from Florida to Michigan. On the return trip back to Florida my wife rode with me. We did zero miles of freeway driving. We took backroads and highways the entire way. We occasionally cruised at 75 MPH, but most of the time ran somewhere around 55 MPH. We passed through many, many small, cool looking, historic old towns along the way. Some of the best scenery was found on the curvy mountain roads of Tennessee and Kentucky. Also in that area I was blown away by the number of 1940’s and 50’s cars still sitting out in fields and backyards. You just don’t see that in my part of the world.

As far as specific roads, from St. Petersburg, Florida up to near Atlanta I took Highway 19. Most of that road is a four lane, very smooth, wide, and with light traffic. Easy driving. From there, I let my phone with Google Maps guide me up through Georgia, Tennessee, and Kentucky. I turned on the “avoid highways” feature. Starting in Southern Indiana I took US - 127 up through Ohio and Michigan. This road is dotted with historic small town America and many farms. It does get pretty bumpy once you cross the Michigan border, lol.

Each year, the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation awards more than 100 students hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds.
Each year, the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Foundation awards more than 100 students hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds.

Last year, five students received the Top Student Awards, which included a $5,000 scholarship. Ten scholarship winners who were chosen to participate in the SEMA Show Student Experience received a trip to the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where they gained firsthand experience and made valuable connections with professionals in the industry.

“The SEMA Scholarship Program is unlike any other scholarship program, in that our goal is more than just handing out money to help with expenses—we strive to support students in pursuing careers in the industry,” said Chris Standifer, SEMA project manager, recognition programs. “Scholarship applicants become a part of our network in which we support the future generation.”

Applications for this year’s scholarship program, which are due March 1, are available at www.sema.org/scholarships. All students with a passion for automobiles and pursuing a career in the industry are encouraged to apply.
