NASCAR's first lady of racing Louise Smith is the inspiration for 'Barnstormer' in 'Cars 3'

Before Janet Guthrie and Danica Patrick, there was Louise Smith -- pioneering race car driver and NASCAR legend. As the first woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999, the "Good 'Ol' Gal" from Greenville, South Carolina, is also the inspiration behind Disney Pixar's "Cars 3" character Louise "Barnstormer" Nash (voiced by Margo Martindale). The name serves as a tribute to the driver and her infamous No. 94 1950 Nash Ambassador. Known for her flair and fearless crashes, Smith's success and style made history in the racing world.

Editor's Picks

Her journey began with the support of a then-young promoter, Bill France Sr., the eventual co-founder of NASCAR. France helped launch Smith's career, and she quickly fell in love with the sport.

She gained national notoriety in 1947 at the Daytona Beach and Road Course race, where, legend has it, Smith went to watch but ended up on the track. Entering her husband's new Ford coupe in the race, the "Barnstormer" wrecked and landed herself on the front page of newspapers across the country.

Known as the "First Lady of Racing," Smith crashed several cars and broke innumerable bones. In fact, one wreck left her with 48 stitches and four pins in her left knee; others are claimed to have nearly taken her life. Her boldness and spectacular speed took the racing world, and many of the men in it, by surprise.

Smith won an impressive 38 races across four divisions from 1947 to 1956, when she retired. She remained active in the racing world for nearly four more decades before her death in 2006 at age 89. Her legacy lives on with "Cars 3," which hits theaters on Friday.

By JASON STEINWheelbase MediaOctober 23, 2012Racing has always been chock-full of "good ol' boys."

But what about the "good ol' girls?"

What about the wild woman from Barnesville, Ga., who used to show her passion for driving fast by outrunning the police in her hometown? What about the woman who loved hanging it out there so much that she nearly broke every bone in her body . . . and was darn proud of it?

There are pioneers who break new ground, and then there's Louise Smith, a woman who took dynamite to conventional thinking.

"I was just born to be wild," Smith told the Baltimore Sun daily newspaper more than a decade ago. "I tried to be a nurse, a pilot and a beautician and couldn't make it in any of them. But from the moment I hit the race track, it was exactly what I wanted."

And how.It was the early 1940s. Racing promoter Bill France Sr., the eventual founder of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR), was looking for a woman driver who might attract more women to his local track in South Carolina.

Someone knew someone else who also knew Smith, a woman who had become legendary for outrunning the law.

Even though she had never seen a race - much less driven in one - Smith finished third in a modified 1939 Ford. Not realizing that the checkered flag meant the end of a race, she kept driving around the track until someone threw out a red flag, forcing her to stop.

"They told me if I saw a red flag to stop. They didn't say anything about the checkered flag," she said.

Smith was bitten by the bug.

A year later, she borrowed her husband's new maroon Ford and said she was going on vacation. Instead, she drove to Daytona Beach, Fla., entered a race and wrecked the car.

On the bus ride back home, she created a story she would tell about the car breaking down on her trip.

"Where's the car, Louise?" her husband, Noah, asked when she returned.

"That ol' trap broke down in Augusta (Ga.)," she said.

Noah then showed her the front of the Greenville, S.C., newspaper that carried a picture of her wreck in Daytona.

"That's the greatest story of all," said the late Benny Parsons, a former NASCAR star and a TV analyst, in an interview in 2006 after Smith's death.

From that point on, despite her husband's objections, Smith became a regular on France's new NASCAR circuit. Using Smith as a bit of a novelty act, France would send her to Canada and the U.S. northeast in hopes of drawing more attention.

"We didn't think (NASCAR) was going anywhere," Smith said in an interview with the Associated Press in 1998. "So if we got the chance to go out of the state, it was like we went to heaven."

In a decade of racing, Smith made a name for herself, by winning races - 38 events in all - and producing spectacular crashes with her aggressive style. In one race her car overturned, a crash that gave her 48 stitches and four pins in her left knee.

On the circuit, driving against some of NASCAR's early legends, she was dubbed the "Good Ol' Gal" by the other drivers.

"We traveled in a gang," she told the Associated Press. "If one of us had a hot dog, we'd all get a bite."

But it was hardly easy being the first woman driver.

"Then men didn't like it to start with and they wouldn't give you an inch," she said.

Smith was a true barnstormer, running for $100 prizes and some extra appearance money.

After retiring in 1956, she remained active with the racing community, helping at tracks and sponsoring cars.

"I enjoyed every minute of it," she said. "Didn't make a whole lot of money, but if I could do it again today, I'd do it. And I think I'd make it."

Smith would be remembered as "the first lady of racing," and was the first woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999.

She died at age 89, but not before leaving an indelible legacy.

Perhaps the late Benny Parsons said it best.

"If we could find a Louise Smith here in 2006 to get in there and finish fourth in the Daytona 500, imagine what that would do for NASCAR racing."

Just imagine.

Congratulations to Milt and Rosemary Roorda on being in the Center Spread of Motoring Tampa Bay Magazine as well as on the cover with their Red 1909 Model T Touring Car.
--------------------------------------------
A few famous Ladies you may not have heard of....
Sounding like the Academy Awards...I would like to thank my mother...and your mother too. If it wasn't for those ladies, most of us (lol) would not be here if it weren't for a woman and we wouldn't be having a great time at Keystone's 3rd Saturday Herb and Carol Wagner Memorial Car Show.

Thank you to Renee Martoglio for the generous donation that has kept us in trophies for 2+ years.

Thank you to Gen Rummy for creating the WOK/Women Of Keystone and the monthly Special Programs, for brewing up and providing 730AM coffee, Root Beer Floats, bottled water, and a Day at The Beach without having to actually go to the beach.

Thank you to Keystone Administrator and purchasing agent, Danni Wells for the monthly support and the ideas, the sounding board critiques, and the negotiating for Keystone on her way to Striving for Great, not just Good.

Thank you to Gail Holsen, photographer and co-anchor with Dan Holsen for Keystone's Facebook member page (search Keystone Motor Car Club Members) and to Isabella Bradley creator of KMC;'s original Facebook page.

Thank you to Carol Prentice, wife of Sam Prentice, founders of Keystone Motor Club and Linda Martin, KMC's prior Meeting Notification Secretary.

And thank you to all the WOK/Women Of Keystone who attended on a cloudy day.
KMC appreciates all of you. Every lady who came onto the premises got a Rose for Ladies day.
including the spectators... We gave Roses also to guys to take home to their favorite female.

To learn more about Famous Ladies go to post # 463, etc of https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/e...r-club-12.html Betty Skelton raced Air Planes as well as a CORVETTE in NASCAR Time trials! Louise Smith was the first Lady of NASCAR and Michelle Mouton was the fastest woman ever in European Car Rallying.
--------------------------------------------
Once again Rickster and two other guys who don't sign in beat me into the parking lot.
This was on a day that looked a little cloudy. I had sent out the rainy day policy that states you can bring a substitute car so you don't get your show car wet and dirty and we drew names for trophies and prizes as promised.
Rick says to me: "Bob, I checked with Paul Dellagato and he says it won't rain until after we leave." Folks you can't get any better advice than that. Even 6 hours later it had not rained. 23 people signed in....a bunch more drove in, hung out a while, and had a good time.
-------------------------------------------
Connor Boggs, graduating Senior, Eastlake High School helped with sign-ins, raffle drawings, and who knows what all. Danni Wells did the 50/50 Club Participation and door prizes. Earl Baker won the Best Of Show Gift Certificate with his '50 Ford. Larry Clark won Best Of Show Trophy with his 307 Chevy. Kurt Kalbach won and donated the Club Participation money back to the club. Thank you sir!
-----------------------------------------------
On June 18th KMC Mancave Day we are giving away TWO Tsunami Classic TSCS 701H Fishing Rods with Quantum Optima 40 4 bearing continuous anti-reverse Reels fully loaded with line...never used.....still in plastic....retails for about $100 each with rod, reel, line and keys to a new car........kidding about the car part....and we have a few other items coming as well.
Get the RED ticket for door prizes. Get the Free Blue ticket for Gift Certificates and free car show entry. Ask Bob about signing up for FREE KMC Mission BBQ Birthday Sandwiches, and Veterans will eat Free sandwiches on Armed Forces Day.
It’s more than 1 day of honor—MISSION BBQ is celebrating for a whole week. 5 days of appreciation for each branch of the military followed by a special lunch on Armed Forces Day. Monday–Friday, May 16-21....all active duty service members and Veterans can enjoy a FREE SANDWICH from any location.
--------------------------------
Kurt and Mechiel Kalbach took me up on the rainy day policy when they drove over in their
1999 FL60 Freightliner. I was looking up by about six feet into Mechiel's smiling face
when she said: "Well, Bob, you said we could bring a substitute vehicle!"
So I signed them in. lol

By chance if a KMC member doesn't know, a Freightliner is the tractor part of a tractor-trailer and it is huge!
A great picture would be Kurt's '79 Trans Am Firebird parked nearest the camera with both vehicles in the same picture and the FL60 Freightliner as a background behind it.

It was a first time happening for Keystone Motor Club. Kurt will give you the story about the unique details of both his Firebird Trans Am and the story of his FL60 Freightliner. NO ONE has seen a Freightliner engine at a car show. Kurt can drive too. He backed the Freightliner into the North lot like he had done it before!

It was another great day in the Keystone Zone, folks, and we thank you for stopping by.
-Bob

Default Congratulations to Dan and Gail Holsen. WE saw your Mustang story!

M O N T H L Y N E W S F R O M T H E B A Y A R E A M U S T A N G S , I N C .
The Voice Page 1 June 2022 Edition This month we are pleased to share the Pony Tale of Dan and Gail Holsen and their 2020 Mustang GT500. (Article by Dan Holsen)

I placed my order for my current Mustang on August 9th of 2019. I must have contacted over a dozen dealers, to see if they had an allocation for a base GT500 and if there was a large markup over MSRP.

After I placed my order with a local Ford dealership the waiting for my second “new car” I ever ordered began. I found a forum call Mustang6G that had inside information from the GT500
production factory in Flat Rock, Michigan. They could track production information based on
VIN numbers and let us know what stage of production our cars were at. I was excited to find out
I had a low chassis number (LO- 191) and a production date for my car of 10/7/2019. At first, I
thought I might get the initial GT500 shipped into Florida! Then I learned that there were
many stages a car had to go through before it would be shipped to the dealer. The car was first "Sent to Plant" (10/19/2019) then "Body Shop" (10/24/2019) after that "Trim Line" (10/28/2019)
finally "Produced" (10/29/2019). Was that it? Would I have the car by Thanksgiving?
No.

The final step would be “Released – awaiting shipment.” I never found out if it was a ps4
Michelin tire issue due to freezing temperatures, electrical, or body panel fitment but the car
would not be released until 12/23/2019. The rail car to Florida shipped after the Christmas/New year shutdown on 01/10/20. The Mustang6G forum would let owners know the car was “on the way” by posting a dancing baby gif.

The Voice Page 5 A Pony’s Tale
Everyone was thirsting to see that kid “shake it” for their delivery. I saw my message on Monday Jan. 11th, 2020. I finally picked up my car on January 28th, five long months after I ordered it.

My Mustang is a 2020/GT500/Rapid Red/5.2Liter/7 speed dual clutch/Port fuel injection/HP 760@crank, 625 lb-ft torque/Composite Carbon Fiber Driveshaft/Zero to 60 3.5sec./1/4 mile 10.7 @134mph/Zero to 100mph and back to Zero in 10.6 seconds/16 ½ inch front brake rotors.

Other interesting features are Carbon Fiber dash/Full exterior PPF (Expel)/Vinyl
stripes/Handling Package: Gurney flap and splitter wickers/Technology Package:
BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert; Voice-Activated
Touchscreen Navigation System; B&O Sound with 12 speakers and subwoofer/
Cobra projection lamps/Magneride suspension.

As for modifications, I have done a JLT cold air intake, replaced the plastic radiator
expansion tank with an Steeda aluminum one, and install some BMR jacking rails,
and added a JLT Cold Air intake, but otherwise I’ll stay stock while under
warranty.

In the future, my Mustang and I will go to shows if they have a good charity cause, or
if a Mustang Club needs support. In general, I like to go to meet & greets where
you don’t have to have your car in “perfect” show condition.

(Continued from Page 1)
If you were to ask me what I love about my Mustang, I’d say that it can pass
anything... (except a gas station). I’ve received some car show trophies, but my favorite is the Kid’s Choice Award I received at a Northpointe show. It is good to see at least one more generation appreciates the internal combustion engine. (Continued on Page 6).
