Famous Race Cars Coming to Feb. 8 Concours in the Hills

by Cyndi Paceley Share

EmailFountain Hills, AZ – After the 2019 Concours in the Hills more than quadrupled the number of cars entered and surpassed a five-fold increase in spectators over its 2014 inaugural event, organizers are planning for more success in the 7th installment on Feb. 8. They have already exceeded the $155,000 raised last year for Phoenix Children’s Hospital and are hoping to raise $200,000.

Among those cars is the 1966 Sebring-winning GT40 driven by Ken Miles; Jacques Villeneuve’s championship-winning March Formula Atlantic; the Paul Newman/Scott Sharp Oldsmobile Trans Am; the Lola T70 Can Am Simoniz Special; the 1982 Eagle Indy car driven by Kevin Kogan; and a 1958 Echidna 58, one of only three built and the 1959 SCCA champion.

Concours in the Hills was the first car show in Arizona to be held on grass rather than in a parking lot. The 2014 event attracted over 200 cars, just four sponsors, a few thousand spectators, and raised about $25,000 for charity.

It is now the largest car show of its type in Arizona, drawing entries from all over the state and as far away as California, Nevada and Colorado. Peter Volny, the founder of the show, attributes the success to the venue that includes gently rolling hills surrounding a lake with America’s tallest fountain and a backdrop of rugged mountain peaks.

Open to numerous categories of vehicles — including race cars, contemporary and vintage high-performance and sports cars, imported and domestic collector and classics, as well as exotics — the show is not a traditional “white gloves” concours but an informal gathering of enthusiasts. Awards are given for Best Import, Best Domestic, Best of Show and Best Car Club Display.

The show will be officially opened by Arie Luyendyk, Derek Daly, Didier Theys, Paul Tracy, Lyn St. James and Harley Cluxton with the “start your engines” announcement.

Vehicle entries are just $60, and spectator admission is free. A few sponsorship spots are still available by contacting Peter Volny at concoursinthehills@cox.net or at 480-773-9070.

The show — owned by Scuderia Southwest, organizers of the monthly Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering — is supported by the leading car clubs of Arizona, both import and domestic.
