MIAMI (AP) -- Multiple agencies, including Progress Energy and Tampa Electric, are reporting statewide power outages.
Affected areas include parts of Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties, Orlando, and parts of Tallahassee and south Florida is experiencing a widespread power outage.
Early reports said the areas of Miami, Doral, Westchester and Pembroke Pines are without power as well as the Port of Miami.
About 4.4 million customers across South Florida were affected, Florida Power and Light officials said.
The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m., as scattered thunderstorms passed through the region. But the cause of the outage was not immediately known.
In Washington, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said there was no immediate concern that terrorism was behind the outage.
Stan Johnson, a spokesman for the North American Electric Reliability Council, said eight power plants were off-line across the region, but officials believe the outage has been contained.
Police officers are directing traffic at intersections in downtown Miami. Many stop lights are out and some stores have closed because they are without power.

I got powa here in the Holiday area, but on the way home from Largo there was no traffic lights for awhile, it must have just happend when I was passing thru cause there was NO cops directing traffic, BOY DID I MAKE TIME!!! Its nice ONCE your on 19 when theres no lights
