Ford's maligned Focus tops key industry report
Consumer Reports praises quality of domestic models
Once labeled the most error-prone vehicle in the auto industry, Ford Motor Co.'s Focus compact car is now getting kudos from one of its toughest critics.
Consumers Reports, which releases its influential New Car Preview 2004 today, placed the Focus at the top of its small car rankings. :o
While the Focus has always won praise for its crisp ride and handling, low reliability numbers and numerous recalls prevented Consumer Reports from recommending it to readers in past years. With improved quality, Focus is now the magazine's top pick in two categories -- small sedans and sporty cars.
"We have been seeing improvement in domestic automaker reliability," Paul said. "This confirms they're getting better."
The turnaround for the Focus was especially striking. Between its introduction in 2000 and Sept. 2002, Ford recalled the vehicle 12 times.
There was more good news for Ford. The automaker's Ford Escape and Explorer sport utility vehicles and Lincoln LS sedan were also recommended for the first time.
The latest Consumer Reports survey, conducted in the spring and covering 1996-2003 models, confirms gains that have showed up in other quality surveys, said Louise Goeser, Ford's vice president for quality.
Ford has been closing the gap with quality leaders Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. in the J.D. Powers and Associates initial quality survey since 2000, Goeser said. Warranty repairs are also on the decline and :o customer satisfaction is at an all-time high, she said. :o

Focus wagons are pretty nice. They look great with a nice set of 17's and a 1.5inch drop. Suprisingly, no one has really turbo'd a wagon...it would make a great sleeper.

I guess they don't include improving quality issue's like.
2003 Cobra - defective drivers cylinder head
2001 Cobra - pinging engine/driveline vibe
1999 Cobra - less then advertised HP.
Sounds like a bunch of PR junk to me. My buddy's New Focus SVT has had idiot lights coming on and off, sun-roof stopped working, and some other problem all in the first month and in less then 1000 miles.
I'm not hating I'm just being realistic.
Also have to take into accoutn that it was the first year of the SVT Focus. Even though it's basically the same vehicle there were some changes. In January when I got my Ranger I was about to get a Focus due to the fact that it is a realiable car and gets great gas mileage.
