Ever get the feeling that there are just too many Ferraris in endurance racing nowadays? Lonely Ferraris? You know, without Fords tinkling in their tortellini? Well, then today is your lucky day: Road & Track reports that Ford may be coming back to Le Mans with a new factory Ford GT program in 2016. Holy. Crap.

Why 2016? It coincides with the 50th anniversary of Ford's victory at Le Mans with the Ford GT40 Mark II, so it would be the perfect opportunity to take the fight to the Corvette and Ferrari in France.
It that doesn't fill you with feelings of patriotism, joy and 'Murica, I don't know what will. Who doesn't like the GT40 and its various descendents throughout the years? Terrorists, that's who. People who hate freedom and our very way of life. Oh, and Italians. Them, too. So, prepare your lasagna-holes, Ferrari. Hide yo' wife, hide yo' schnitzel, Porsche. And Aston Martin, it's time for a tea break.
Ford's return to Le Mans has been floating around the rumor mill for a while, but with nothing quite this awesome on the table. First, there was talk of a GTE Mustang program, and then, a P2 prototype. While those would likely produce a V8 roar so glorious that it would make bald eagles shed a single, proud tear, neither have quite the history of ruining Enzo Ferrari's day.
But now, even though the Mustang GTE program was nixed, R&T's Marshal Pruett reports that a representative with Ford was in attendance at the GTE constructors' meetings at Circuit of the Americas regarding the 2016 rules for the class.
Publicly, Ford Racing head Jamie Allison says that they're focused on their partnerships with existing teams as well as their Daytona Prototype cars in the Tudor United SportsCar series, but sources point to Canadian builders Multimatic as a likely partner for the GTE Ford GT entry.
The best part of all of this? The launch of a new Ford GT 24 Hours of Le Mans entry would most likely coincide with a new production car version. Road & Track lists the 2016 Detroit Auto Show as the car's likely debut.
If this is all true, this is fantastic, fantastic news and a sign that Ford really wants to kick Ferrari — and Corvette's ass at their own game.

 

The Ford GT40 Mk II was decidedly exotic in comparison to most American cars of the era (of course, that’s mostly due to its Anglo-American heritage and the help of Lola), but its 7.0-liter big-block was built of the same stuff as the Galaxies coming off Ford’s assembly lines back home—iron block, pushrods, and all. Still, there’s something magical about hearing it snarling, barely contained by the GT40’s rear bodywork.


The retro-modern Ford GT didn’t race, officially. All its track exploits were privateer efforts. That makes the original the last one to run in anger with Ford’s full blessing. And it’s part of what makes us so excited about the likelihood for a new Ford GT—one designed from the get-go to race at the highest level against the world’s best competition.

Old, new, it doesn’t matter; when you drop a big, bad-ass American V-8 amidships, only good things ensue.

We all miss the absurdly beautiful Ford GT. Gone from the Ford lineup since 2006, rumor has it the Blue Oval could revive the muscle coupe for a 2016 run at Le Mans. But there’s a lot of information (and misinformation) regarding Ford’s reborn supercar.
In light of a storied racing history and winning past at LeMans, the company will allegedly bring out two versions of its new GT. An onroad version, and a race car. Ford hopes that race car will carry Detroit to victory at LeMans once again. Enough reports are telling us that a new GT is actually happening, but there’s still much to be speculated on the actual powertrain.



Rumors have swirled over the past few months about what the company would use. They range from the insane of quad 1.0-liter EcoBoost motor for each wheel, to the more likely and highly reported 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. While Ford uses a highly tuned Roush Yates EcoBoost in the company’s DP cars for the IMSA series, it’s unlikely we will see that engine in the road car.

In terms of viability, the race car is much more likely to use the EcoBoost configuration. It’s already a proven design, and the company and race team have reams of data to go off of rather than using a brand new engine. However, with Ford spending millions of dollars developing the new flat-plane crank 5.2-liter found in the GT350, it seems more likely that the road version will use that motor.
When it comes to the road car, it’s also a matter of heritage. The GT has always been powered by the company’s strongest, most burly engines, and what better motor than a high-revving. naturally aspirated V8 that sounds like a old race car from the 50’s or 60’s?





If Ford doesn’t show up with at least a concept, the company would miss a golden opportunity. Although being the GT’s 50[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary, and all the rumors, why wouldn’t the Blue Oval bring back its most famous racer? Thankfully, the Detroit Auto Show is just around the corner, so we don’t have that long to wait to see if our predictions come true.

Ford is going back to Lemans, Back in the 60s Ford was a leader when it ran the entire 24 hour race on a computer simulator hoked to a chassis dyno, no one ha dever done that before.
