This Richard Petty Ford Mustang Sold Twice for $535,000 at Auction
By Zach Doell
When NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty shows up to an event, there’s bound to be excitement. And that’s just what happened when when “The King” made an entrance at Saturday’s Mecum Dallas auction.
The NASCAR superstar received a standing ovation as he drove his customized 2015 Ford Mustang GT across the auction block, which he offered up for sale with all proceeds benefitting the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA). Little did he—or anyone—know, it would sell twice in one night.
The Petty’s Garage 2015 Ford Mustang GT crossed the block and gaveled for a commanding $330,000. The winning bidder then turned around and donated the Mustang back to the PVA. An hour later it would auction again, this time raising $205,000 for the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and bringing its one-night total to $535,000.
Needless to say, it topped Mecum Auctions’ sales charts for the weekend, and made for an exciting and emotional bit of television.
It certainly isn’t your average Mustang any longer, though. Richard Petty had his performance shop, Petty’s Garage, overhaul the Mustang GT’s looks and powertrain. Now the Mustang’s 5.0-liter V8 kicks out 627 horsepower and comes fitted with a Roush TVS 2300 supercharger, which pairs with a cold-air intake and a new Magnaflow exhaust.
Upgraded Wilwood brakes and brake lines find a home at all four corners of the Ford, along with aluminum wheels wrapped in Continental tires. Inside, Petty’s Garage dressed the Mustang with a bespoke Katzkin leather interior, while on the outside the car’s wild black-and-blue custom paint job makes no concessions.
