Old timer new to this forum

 

I use to live off Hwy92 down a dirt road at the end of Tampa Drags. Tampa ran on Sunday's and it would be my alarm clock when the first car fired up at the track. I would wake up and take the race car out the dirt road, turn right, head a quarter mile west and turn north on Black Dairy rd. which dead ended at I-4 and the track. There would be a bunch of people both black and white hoovered around the starting line betting money on one car or another. You know I can not recall ever having racial problems back then and this was the early 70's. It's my understanding that the drag strip was ran on the old Hwy 92 road bed. I know at the shut down end you could see a yellow line going down the middle. The story was that Hwy 92 was relocated when I-4 was installed. Man I have a ton of great memories running that track. At the time we were under the understanding the track was 66 feet short which recently it has been said it was more like120 feet? The track ran down hill towards the end then would rise towards the end and turn right. It end not far from Hwy 579 which I and other ran across and wound up in the Texaco gas station.

 

I remember driving to the 24 hours of Daytona...seeing Tampa Dragway alongside, driving down I-4 toward Daytona, after they quit drag racing there. The timing building was at the West end of the track. I was told that some of the fastest dragsters could not stop before reaching the intersection of Hwy 92 and 579 and that was why it got closed.

I should have taken pictures of the timing shack before it got torn down....but it was not impressive looking and I was interested in sports cars at the time. I may not have had a camera back then. I wish I had taken pictures of the strip itself from each end, but we don't always think in terms of historical value.

In my interest of cars in general, I had heard the name Don Garlits as being a drag racer, but it was years later that I learned that Garlits had a shop and a house in Seffner. Don's brother Ed had a gas station/garage on the west side of MacDill Avenue across the street from the old MacDill Auto Parts. Around the early 70's Don opened a much bigger shop in partnership with Zorian the exhaust header guy. That shop was on Main Street, across Himes Avenue, East of what is now Walmart on Dale Mabry. I regret that I never did stop and at least look at that Main street shop.
