highly placed spoliers like that allow for a lesser angle of attack, thus creating a smaller amount of drag while still creating a ton of downforce (same reason the evo and sti have tall spoliers). huge spoilers like that are not uncommon on highly modified porsches that see a lot of track time
I know all that....it still looks ugly.

psh. the 996 gt3 isnt nearly as nice as the 997 gt3. plus, 996 has the gt2, which is probably the best looking 996 in my opinion(dont like the ugly scrambled egg headlights). the gt1 was another gt car split between generations, with a 993 version, and a 996 version.
