General Motors Unions Workers on Strike
General Motors Unions Workers on Strike
I'm kinda wondering why there hasn't been a thread yet.
Union employees are on strike.
GM plants hit by UAW strike - Sep. 24, 2007
I'd say good move GM. There's too much surplus in the inventory. Plus, get rid of the union workers, hiring them cost too much.

73,000 workers walk in nationwide GM strike
Marathon bargaining session fails to produce deal as 73,000 UAW members start strike; talks set to resume.
A key to the contract talks is GM's goal of shifting an estimated $51 billion in future health care costs for retirees and their family members to union-controlled trust funds. GM has more than 340,000 retirees and surviving spouses receiving such benefits today.
Shifting those costs is seen as a key to GM efforts to close its cost gap with nonunion automakers such as Toyota Motor (Charts) and Honda Motor (Charts). Ford and Chrysler combined are facing nearly $50 billion of retiree health care costs as well.
Most analysts have said that a long strike at General Motors would be a crippling blow for the automaker's efforts to return its North American operations to profitability, the automaker is probably in a relatively good position to weather a short strike.

Are you a union worker? I doubt it.
Unions are diminishing. There is no need for them due to government labor laws implied on employers. It's only driving GM's payroll up, hurting the company.
I know plenty of people who are looking for work. Every several days, I get a call in from a stranger asking for work.

Do you think someone with just a highschool education should make this much money?
I am a member of the electrician's union but our wages are more inline with reality. We are also highly trained (5-year apprenticeship program).
What those UAW workers make without hardly any training at all is sick. AND they complain and strike every year because even that is not enough.
According to Forbes:
Labor cost per hour, wages and benefits for hourly workers, 2006.
Ford: $70.51 ($141,020 per year)
GM: $73.26 ($146,520 per year)
Chrysler: $75.86 ($151,720 per year)

I pay my employees only $30 per hour including benefits. They don't have a degree, but should have one.
I feel this topic shouldn't be in this section. Now i know why it hasnt been spoken in here. Move to TF, not TR

I live right up the road from the original Saturn plant, small crew were out front tonight.. sorry, no support from me.. 30 miles awa in Smyrna/LaVergne Nissan is paying comparable wages (50k for a line worker, etc) without a Union.. bring the benefits in line with reality and GM/Ford/Chrysler will be competitive in the market, until then it's just whiny UAW workers.
