I dont see how they are that bad, they are a damn near infinitely changeable wheel, different size lips, different size barrels, different offset faces, bolts, hex caps, center colors, etc. When it comes down to it you're going to be hard pressed to find a wheel like that for less than $3k. They also go for $3k because, 1. Most people are clueless as to where they come from/get them, 2. Most people would rather buy something finished than put the time into building a set, 3. Believe it or not, It cost that much to build a NICE set of wheels.

they're expensive only cause you gotta find the right, OEM parts for them. they're starting to get quite sparse. and you can get some seriously bad ass lips for them which also add up quite a lot.
RS's were VERY rare a couple years back. but once people got to them, from all sorts of different cars that came with them stock, they we're able to jack up the price quite a lot because they were hard to get and do right. but now they've become fairly common and so forth...
they are great wheels, look very clean on just about any car, and the possibilities are endless with what you can do with them and make them look like...as with just about any 2-3 piece wheels...
