Joe, how does flipping the barrels effect the backspacing on a wheel?

I think it makes it a negative offset.

Not really...negative offset is determined by the mounting surface of the hub versuses the mid point of the wheel. If the mounting surface of the hub is in the dead center, that is 0 offset. At least that's the way I understand it, so flipping the barrel does not effect this.

Well, pending the width of the wheels, it could. I think, say, the wheel has a really high offset like +50 or higher, and is maybe fairly wide, like at least 10.5" there would be a lot more lip/wheel behind the face inside the wheel well, if you flip the faces, then all that inside will be outside and then therefore you will have a huge dish and it will be poking more with a negative offset.

If my thinking is correct it made sense to me but someone may need to clarify if I'm thinking on the right track...
