Ok guys.. Got in an disagreement with a coworker of mine. This lady had a flat tire on her 99 V6 firebird. We started to change it and I told him that we should take the flat rear tire off replace it with the front and put the spare on the front. Her v6 had the G80 code on the door panel and dual turn down pipes which ment it had limited slip with 3.42 gears.
Now I was worried that she would burn up her positraction because the donut looked smaller than the actual tire. So as long as the donut is the same height as the other tire should there be any problem?

He said that limited slip had to do with the tires spinning at wide open throttle. That he was wrong about.. I didnt argue with him... It wasnt my car that was getting the spare on the back.
Thoughts?

Those are exactly my thoughts on it..

But where the conflict comes in is that the ride height is the same so the distance traveled turning left from right wouldnt matter. The LSD wouldnt be constantly slipping and burn out because of it. Yet at the same time I remember something about always putting the donut on the front tire and never the rear.
I didnt feel like arguing nor did I know the specfics on it to argue.

The rule of thumb I have always followed is always carry a full size spare if possible that way I dont have to worry about it. But with LSD on RWD cars/trucks always put the same size height and width on a drive wheel even if it does not always drive. LSD kicks in when needed. How are you going to know in advance when you will need it?
Plus why risk a smaller tire and making the LSD think it is needed when it really isnt.

Just my assesment.

yes but if one is smaller than the other then one is spinning more rpms to keep up with the other side even in a straight line. get a full size spare. people take spare tires for grnated. they are not to be used for a week untill you get around to changing your tire. they are to be used to go TO the tire shop.

as far as the firebird is concerned.. do the f-bodies still use different offset/width from front to rear? on the older f-bodies you cant rotate from to rear.

while it is completely different from rwd i know for a fact that
quaife explicitly states not to use a spare on the front of the
car and recommends switching a good tire up from the rear
and putting the spare on the back.
