If it comes down to me having to buy a turbo diesel vehicle in order to save money from ridiculous gas prices, I will go this route;
First step >>
Buy a used old school 80-84 vw rabbit/caddy(pickup) turbo diesel @ VWVortex.com - Golf I/Jetta I Cars
Second step >>
Buy a vegetable oil conversion kit @ 1980-1984 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup (Caddy) 1.5/1.6L Greasecar Kit | Greasecar Vegetable Fuel Systems
Third step = Go to restaurants or fast foods and ask to pump all there old grease tanks for free gas

^ I don't know if this is your first account on here but I had a party bus which was used to travel across country on veggie oil and its a little more difficult then you think but it is definitely a great way to save money.
A tdi version of the 2012 beetle would'nt be to bad for the wife. I'd take a tdi jetta any day over a hybrid. All i can remember is working for honda when the civic hybrid first came out and trying to spin the tires in the rain was a fail... That turned me away from hybrids even though I know they've come a long way since then.
And for those that havent seen the new bodystyle...
Thats a base model ( i think SE) not a TDI but very simple very clean and not a fagtastic hybrid.

Google "project sipster" if you haven't seen it yet. Topgear america did it right with that car.
I'm not a big fan of hybrids, the slightly better gas mileage isn't worth the awful power. I'd want the jag tt diesel though, assuming it every comes to the US.

Diesel for sure. I hate Hybrids with extreme prejudice. And for you that haven't seen a good video about MPG's...

I get 32MPG with 220HP, no complaints here even though I have to run 93 octane. If I had to choose a new fuel source, natural gas or hydrogen. Both of which have been in use for years in production vehicles made by Honda. I don't know if anyone realizes how cheap even natural gas is. It would cost you like $1 to fill your tank.

I dont know if you realize how easy the fucking question is to answer.
