Trans Am event at the historic 17-turn, 3.74-mile airport-based circuit, sharing the asphalt on this occasion with the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) and its Sebring Vintage Classic. The late Jochen Rindt, the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hour winner for Ferrari and future Formula 1
world champion, won the first Sebring Trans Am race, the Four-Hour Governor’s Cup, held on Friday, March 25, 1966, the day before the 12 Hours.Related
Retro: Trans-Am's 1969 season
Impressively, Rindt drove an Alfa Romeo 1600GTA that he had rolled in pre-event practice. There were 40 starters and the early laps of the race featured a side-by-side battle for the lead between A.J. Foyt in a Ford Mustang and Charley Rainville in a Plymouth Barracuda. But Bob
Tullius would survive the long race to finish second in a Dodge Dart, as Alfas claimed the next three positions.Trans Am returned the following year as the Four-Hour International, drawing a then-record 61 entries. Jerry Titus won in a Ford Mustang, lapping Mark Donohue’s second-
place Chevrolet Camaro Z-28. Peter Gregg and Sam Posey took honors in the Under-2 liter class, sharing a Porsche 911.In 1968, Trans Am ran concurrently with the 12 Hours of Sebring. While Porsche backed up its 1-2-3 finish in the Daytona 24 Hours by taking the top two
positions at Sebring with its potent 907s, Donohue and Craig Fisher took Trans Am honors with a third-place overall finish. Roger Penske-entered Camaros placed third and fourth overall, with Joe Welch and Bob Johnson finishing behind their winning teammates. The Under 2-liter
class ran separately on Friday, with Bert Everett winning the Three-Hour Governor’s Cup in a Porsche 911.With the series moving to shorter races, the next Trans Am race at Sebring was not until 1999, with a standalone weekend serving as the season finale. Paul Gentilozzi put the
icing on his championship title by winning in a Mustang. For 2000 and 2001, Trans Am ran in support of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring. Brian Simo won the 2000 season opener in a Qvale Mangusta, while Boris Said won the following year in a Mustang. Trans Am next returned in 2011 during the 12 Hours weekend, with R.J. Lopez winning a 103.5-mile race in a Chevrolet Corvette.
Since 2013, Trans Am has been a major component of the SVRA Sebring Vintage Classic, held two weekends prior to the 12 Hours.Doug Peterson scored the 2013 and 2014 overall victories in a Corvette, while Cameron Lawrence captured both TA2 victories in a Camaro. The two
drivers went on to win their respective titles in both seasons.Amy Ruman won the 2015 season opener to begin her successful bid to become Trans Am’s first female champion, while Lawrence took his third consecutive Sebring TA2 triumph, this time at the wheel of a Dodge
Challenger.Kenny Bupp led the 2016 event by winning TA while Gar Robinson led TA2, both driving Camaros. The following year, Cliff Ebben led TA and Dillon Machvern paced TA2, both in Mustangs.Last year, Ernie Francis Jr. won the lead TA class in a Mustang. Dodge Challenger
driver Marc Miller took a dramatic victory in TA2, passing Rafa Matos for the lead with only two laps remaining. Mark Boden took his second consecutive Sebring TA3 (now SuperGT) triumph in a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, while Andrew Aquilante paced TA4 (now GT) in a Camaro. At this
weekend’s event, each of the four Trans Am classes tested on Friday to open on-track activities. Today began with late-morning practice, qualifying for each of the classes beginning at 4:55pm.The TA2 race will take the green flag tomorrow at 11:10am, while the TA, SGT and GT
classes will race together beginning at 3:25pm. The Sebring Vintage Classic offers racing for all SVRA race groups, highlighted by an MG Marque Reunion. Click hereClick here for SVRA entry lists and event schedules.

Johansson’s ‘planes, trains and automobiles’ adventure at Sebring 1984 Images by Sebring Int'l Raceway
176 sharessharetweetemail
By: Marshall Pruett March 14, 2019 9:22 AM Stefan Johansson is half convinced the crazy adventures and obstacles he faced while trying to reach Sebring in 1984 inspired the popular 1987 movie ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ starring Steve Martin and John Candy. Some 35 years ago, Johansson was doing his best to keep a shaky Formula 1 career from flaming out. Invited to race at the famed 12-hour endurance event in Florida in an aged Porsche 935 against cutting-edge IMSA GTP models from March, Lola, and Jaguar, a battle of eras was at play. Taking paying rides when offered, Johansson accepted the challenge in the Joest-built 935 arranged by Colombian gentleman racer Mauricio de Narváez. Along with German pro Hans Heyer, the trio weren’t expected to do more than pad an obscene entry list overflowing with sports cars.Provided Heyer and Johansson made it to Sebring. From the outset, everything that could go wrong for the spiky-haired Swede did, and often with comical results. What ensued was an endurance race to get to the endurance race that far surpassed the rigors of racing a Porsche 935 around the old school airport circuit.Stefan Johansson. Image by Richard Dole/LAT.
“Oh, this [is] a really good one, actually,” Johansson says. “It was with Joest, Reinhold Joest, because I’d been driving for him the year before in ’83 with a [Porsche] 956 in Europe, and this deal came together very, very late, with Mauricio de Narváez who was the third driver in the car, [who] came up with the money, I guess. And they actually pulled out this old Moby Dick Porsche, the 935, out of the museum. Literally, the Porsche museum. It had been in there for years. I mean it still had duct tape numbers on the sides… Like, absolutely last minute. Just fill it up with fuel and send it, more or less.“But the funny part of the story is that Hans and I, we were leaving Frankfurt [Germany] to fly out on…I’m guessing it would’ve been Monday probably, to arrive here Monday night in Sebring. Anyway, it was like that movie ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ on steroids ’cause we didn’t arrive [until] Saturday morning, before the race.”De Narváez, left to practice and qualify the retro 935 without the support of his professional co-drivers, must have been wondering if he’d be driving solo for 12 hours after his teammates failed to materialize for five full days.“It was like, unbelievable,” Johansson continues. “It was engines broken, snow delays, diversions, trains literally from somewhere up in upstate New York down to some other airport. I mean, it was crazy. To make a very long story short, this went on for like four days to try to get there. And we arrive on Saturday morning, by car. We flew in, so we had to drive like three hours. We arrive here at like at 8:00 in the morning.”It’s worth mentioning at this point that, despite accepting the invitation, and going through travel hell from Monday through Saturday morning — race morning, to be more precise — Johansson had never seen the Sebring circuit. Never walked it. Never driven it. And if that wasn’t enough, he and Heyer were completely exhausted. Compounding the problem, Johansson had never driven a Porsche 935.

Part 2 Images by Sebring Int'l Raceway
By: Marshall Pruett March 14, 2019 9:22 AM In a trance-like state due to sleep deprivation, our hero would get to know the 935, and Sebring, and where its dozen-plus corners went…during his first stint in the race.“[I was] destroyed because we hadn’t slept for like, four days,” he says as his eyes grew wide. “I mean literally, I was sleeping on airport benches and stuff, you know. And… I’d never seen the track, I’d never seen the car, no idea where…you know, of anything. We arrived at the track, I’m not even sure we signed in. Given de Narváez qualified the car like in… I don’t know, 50th place or something because there was like 80 cars or something starting the race then.“So he starts to race, and kinda just stayed in more or less the same [position], and then Hans jumps in. And he gets up to speed pretty quick, you know. So he starts picking up some places and then it’s my turn. I said I’d never driven the car, I had no idea of the track — I did see the [circuit went] left after the pits…”Once inside the brutally powerful turbocharged flat-six-powered Porsche, Johansson was stunned to find the transmission was not suited for road course racing. The 935, however, would have been perfectly suited on the high banks of Talladega.“And Sebring back then was like a huge airfield. To just get your bearings right, where to turn even, was difficult,” he adds. “And then this car had this locked rear differential. So if you lift completely, like if you’re turning right and you’re going a pretty hefty speed as you did that and you lift off completely, the thing would just turn left because the diff would just steer it…“I knew nothing about it. I mean literally, it was like half an hour to get our s••t together, helmets and everything, and then just, all right, you’re on! So, I was being passed by anything you could see out there. Ah, bloody hell.”Considering all of the obstacles he faced, and the extremely long odds of hauling the old and cranky 935 from the back of the field into a competitive position, simply making it to Sebring and taking the green flag was a victory for the No. 48 Porsche team. But in typical Johansson fashion, that couldn’t be the end of the story. How did de Narváez, Heyer, and the irrepressible Swede fare at the 1984 12 Hours of Sebring? They won!
Listen in to the rest of the tale that sounds like a Hollywood script, but actually happened 35 years ago in the Sunshine State:

12 Hours of Sebring Race 1966

The 1966 12 Hours of Sebring was an endurance race held at the 5.2 mile (8.3 km) Sebring International Raceway, Sebring, Florida, United States on March 26, 1966. It was the sixteenth running of the endurance classic and the second round of the 1966 World Sportscar Championship season. The race proved to be a disastrous event; one of the darkest in
American motorsports history. Ford had just come off a 1-2-3 triumph at the first 24 Hours of Daytona in February, with 2 of their 7-liter engined GT40 Mk.II's being run by Carroll Shelby. They had effectively trounced Ferrari and Porsche, and were looking to do the same thing at Sebring in March. Ford's assault on Sebring (which has always been a good
preparation run for Le Mans) was unprecedented. There were 11 GT40 Mk.I's, Mk.II's and a special X-1 Roadster (which was a heavily modified GT40 Mk.I with an aluminum chassis, a Mk.II nose, no roof and a 7-liter 427 engine, the same motor in a Mk.II) at Sebring- these cars were entered by at least 5 different teams- all of whom had direct factory support. The
two main works teams, however, were Shelby-American, a team with direct connections to Ford and seasoned with lots of road-racing experience; and the Holman & Moody team, which was known for its successes in NASCAR. There were also 2 works Ferrari's (originally there were supposed to be 5) and 2 Chaparral 2D's. American Dan Gurney qualified his
Shelby-entered Mk.II on pole position with a lap record of
.6, followed by the new Ferrari 330P3 of Bob Bondurant and Mike Parkes, then a Mk.I of Britons Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart, then another Mk.II of Americans Mark Donohue and Walt Hansgen, then the X-1 of Briton Ken Miles and American Lloyd Ruby and then a Chaparral 2D of Americans Jim Hall
and Hap Sharp. Ford would dominate yet again. Gurney and Grant were leading- and on the last lap, while Gurney was driving, the car's engine failed. People at the pits were expecting Gurney to take victory- but Ken Miles crossed the finish line first in the GT40 X-1. Gurney was pushing his GT40 Mk.II on the course, and he made it to the finish line. Although
pushinlg a car during the race was illegal- and the car was disqualified, and the Holman/Moody entered GT40 Mk.II was awarded 2nd place. 3rd was an Essex Wire entered GT40 Mk.I of Skip Scott and Peter Revson, and then a works Porsche finished 4th. Text from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1966_12_...
