Roush donates tribute car to Yates' son

The NASCAR community lost a giant in 2017 when Robert Yates died in October after a long battle with liver cancer. He was 74.

Jack Roush, who partnered with Yates and Ford in 2003 to form Roush Yates engines, and Roush Fenway Racing ran a tribute scheme on Ricky Stenhouse's Ford Fusion at the Phoenix race in November. On Wednesday, Roush presented Yates' son Doug with that car at the Roush Fenway shop.
Robert Yates will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Jan. 19.

Bowman Gray Stadium is a hidden gem in motorsports. In 2004 Totally NASCAR took a look at the Short Track that is so rich in history and present-day success. The story is shot and produced by Matthew Dillner.

 

Memories of Bowman Gray Stadium...
When I was in grade school, mom and dad would pick me up right after school
and we would take off to Winston Salem. We cooked Vienna sausages on the exhaust manifold and ate crackers. At the stadium we would buy french fries with vinegar on them.

At the end of the night, we had glistenings all over us from the asphalt dust, and we would get a dozen doughnuts from Krispy Kreme near what has become historical "Old Salem". Krispy Kreme was right across from the old coffee pot where a colonist hid from the British one night in the 1700's.

The smell of alcohol/racing fuel mix has never changed from then until now all across
the small tracks still scattered around Florida and the South. Once you smell it, it never goes away.

Step back into the past and see 13 different Old Speedways that many have long since closed. Watch what these tracks were like in their heyday with several Hall of Fame Drivers at the wheel. Visit tracks like Pine Bowl, Greenport, Coxsackie, Burden Lake, Cairo Fairgrounds, Onteora, Route 66, Albany-Saratoga, 1975 Fonda Car Show, Accord, Orange Co. Airport (1960 NASCAR Grand Nationals), Orange Co. Fairgrounds, Lebanon Valley (1987 World of Outlaws). An extensive compulation of 8mm movies and photos will bring you right back to the speedways. In the Albany-Saratoga section, there is rare footage of Ernie Gahan in-car camera competing in a heat race from the early 1970's.

See N.A.S.C.A.R. Grand Nationals race at Orange Co. Airport in 1960 on an odd triangle shape track made of runways. Lebanon Valley segment is flag to flag coverage of the 1987 World of Outlaws feature event announced by Jim King. Also at the end of some speedway segments, there are current airviews depicting the tracks as it rests quietly today. Northeast Stock Car Old Timers (N.E.S.O.T.) with over 200 members since 1985 has been an active club keeping the spirit alive with the history of auto racing holding several functions and events throughout the year and celebrates the career of many drivers, crew, and race fans.
