[h=1]George Waltman display now available for view[/h] Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 4:06 by GODWIN KELLY
Fifty years ago a British Airways pilot named George Waltman took a car that a friend found at a police impound lot in the Bronx and drove it down to Florida for the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
George Waltman 1968 Rolex 24 display

The big difference between Waltman and others coming down for the event was that he then raced the 1964 Morgan Plus 4 street car, by himself, finished the race, took a side trip to Miami and then drove it back home to New York — all on the same set of tires.

Waltman set a Daytona International Speedway and sports-car record unlikely to be broken.
He is the only driver in Rolex 24 At Daytona history to run the entire race solo and take the checkered flag. It is a tale packed full of racing lore.
“He always said an endurance race should not be all about the endurance of the car, but the endurance of the driver, otherwise it breaks it down to four races,” his daughter Tara Waltman said of her father, who died in 2013. “That was always his belief.”
To celebrate this achievement, the ISC Archives and Research Center has set up a display with items on loan from the Waltman family, including the helmet he wore for that solo run.
Each week this blog will highlight items from the ISC Archives and Research Center.
Fans may visit the ISC Archives and Research Center as part of a Daytona International Speedway “VIP Tour” that provides race fans an opportunity for an intimate, exclusive look behind-the-scenes at the “World Center of Racing.”
In addition to the ISC Archives and Research Center visit – where fans can see artifacts, past champion trophies, historic images and more – the VIP Tour provides an insider’s look at areas such as the Drivers’ Meeting Room, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series garages, tech inspection and the Daytona 500 Club President’s Row.
Fans can have their photo taken at Daytona’s famed Gatorade Victory Lane and enjoy a birds-eye view of the entire 2.5-mile track from the new Daytona Rising Stadium. The tour concludes with access to the Coca-Cola Theatre and a close-up look at Denny Hamlin’s Daytona 500 winning car.
In addition, VIP Tour guests also get a visit to the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, which has moved to DIS from Novi, Michigan. The MSHFA is located in the DIS Ticket and Tours Building.
Admission to the VIP Tour is $52 per person and advanced reservations are encouraged as availability is limited. Reservations can be made in person at the Daytona International Speedway Ticket Office or by calling 877-306-7223.

[h=1]More renovations at Daytona[/h] Monday, August 28, 2017 at 4:10 by GODWIN KELLY
In the recent months, Daytona International Speedway has been working another renovation project, just this time, it’s on a smaller scale.
Daytona 500 Club renovation [PHOTO/DIS]

After completing the $400 million Daytona Rising project in 2016, a three-year project that transformed the Speedway into the world’s only motorsports stadium, the track now has its sights set on the Daytona 500 Club, the four-story building located in the infield just outside of Gatorade Victory Lane. The renovation project is a significant facelift for the building that was first constructed in 2004 as part of a massive infield overhaul.
Among the improvements slated for Daytona 500 Club include modernized flooring, lighting, tile and new furniture. The Banquet and Lounge Levels (first and second floor) will have new carpet and tile, lighting and furniture. In ad
dition, the Banquet Level will have two new portable bar set ups and the Lounge Level bar is also being renovated. The Suite Level (third floor) will also see new furniture and carpet and tile throughout.
Much of the improvements have already been completed.
The Daytona 500 Club is used throughout the year for many functions. During events, the Daytona 500 Club provides a premier hospitality experience for fans that includes food and drink, UNOH Fanzone and Pre-Race access and access to Gatorade Victory Lane post-race.
It’s available for the Rolex 24 (called the Champions Club), Speedweeks events and the DAYTONA 500 and the Coke Zero 400 Weekend. A wide selection of packages are available (season long packages, multiple days or DAYTONA 500 only) to choose from.
For more information, call 1866-887-6475.

[h=1]Fireball Roberts nabbed Ford’s first win at Bristol[/h] Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 2:22 by GODWIN KELLY
Ford won it’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 31, 1963 when Fireball Roberts, who lived in Daytona Beach, won the Southeastern 500. What made the win so noteworthy is that it marked the debut of Roberts with Ford as a teammate of Fred Lorenzen’s at Holman-Moody.
Fireball Roberts

The duo put on a dominating show that day as they combined to lead 329 of 500 laps with Roberts leading 165 and Lorenzen 164. Roberts passed his new teammate with eight laps to go and won by five seconds as the race saw only one caution for nine laps. Roberts went on to win four races in 1963 while Lorenzen won six times.

[h=1]3-time Daytona 200 winner Klamfoth remains active[/h] Thursday, March 16, 2017 by GODWIN KELLY

Dick Klamfoth back in the day. Photos: ISC Archives & Research Center

Dick Klamfoth is in town this week, 88 years young and acting nearly as spry as when he won the Daytona three times when he really was young – 1949, ’51 and ’52.
If you’ve never met Klamfoth, you’ve missed out. He’s one of the original bad-asses who built his legend on the old Daytona beach-road course. He was known for his talent – and for his unique racing uniforms.
Hand-made by a family member, they featured an artistic “K” logo on satin that made him look like a comic book superhero. Sort of like the Flash on two wheels.

Klamfoth visited the ISC Archives & Research Center in Daytona Beach several days ago, in a quest to replace a number of photos he and his wife Beverly lost in a house fire in December 2014, in Thornville, Ohio.
Mission accomplished. When Klamfoth heads back home, he’ll have replacement images of many of his greatest career moments.
The center provided us with two pictures of Klamfoth – one from his DAYTONA 200 glory days and another “instant classic” of him holding court in the center, telling one of his many stories about his personal good old days.

Also this week, Klamfoth was part of an annual gathering at the oceanfront DAYTONA 200 monument. In the 1990s, he and his wife secured a small plot of land near the beachside band shell and raised money to build the monument. It is dedicated to the champions of the DAYTONA 200 races held on the beach from 1937 to 1960 prior to the event moving to Daytona International Speedway in 1961.

Klamfoth, 88, visited the ISC Archive & Research Center earlier this week.

Daytona Xfinity finish closest in NASCAR history

Tyler Reddick wins closest NASCAR race ever at Xfinity Series Daytona race

NEWS ANIO
Published on Feb 17, 2018

Tyler Reddick needed five overtimes, a brief red flag and the closest finish in NASCAR history to take Dale Earnhardt Jr.to victory lane.Reddick won the Xfinity Series' season-opening race by beating JR Motorsports teammate Elliott Sadler in a photo finish. The margin of victory was 0.000 seconds, breaking the mark set by Butch Miller when he beat Mike Skinner by 0.001 seconds to win the Truck Series race July 15, 1995 at Colorado National Speedway."How do I protest that? It's a tie, and it should go to the elder," joked veteran Sadler of the win that went to the 22-year-old Reddick.Reddick later joked a protest was still a winning proposition for the organization."Either way, JR Motorsports wins, right?" Reddick said."That was insane.I saw a picture of it 10 minutes ago and it was just enough." It was a nail-biting and tense opener at Daytona International Speedway for NASCAR's second-tier series, which celebrated its 100th race sponsored by Xfinity on Saturday.FOLLOW FOX NEWS AUTOS ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE The victory came in Reddick's debut race for JR Motorsports, the team in part owned by Earnhardt Jr.This is Earnhardt's first season in retirement from full-time racing and his presence at the race track is still strong through his race team.JR Motorsports has won five of the last nine Xfinity Series races at Daytona, and Reddick's victory led a 1-2 sweep for the company."Either way, fine with me," Earnhardt said of the finish."I watched the whole thing, it was incredible.I was surprised by the amount of overtimes.Fans want to see a green-flag finish and NASCAR tries everything it can to give them that opportunity." Sadler was temporarily crestfallen.Sadler finished second in the 2002 Daytona 500 and was passed for the lead right before the rain came in the abbreviated 2009 race. His best finish in all three of NASCAR's national series at Daytona is second."This one hurts a lot," said Sadler."I don't know how many more starts I'll have at this race track.I really want to get one of the trophies here at this place." For Reddick, it was his second Xfinity victory and in the biggest race to date of his career. He won once last year driving a partial schedule for Chip Ganassi, then moved to Earnhardt's team this season."A hell of a way to start the year off with JR Motorsports," Reddick said.Ryan Reed was third, and Kaz Grala fourth, in Fords.Garrett Smithley was a career-best fifth and Daniel Suarez was the highest finishing Toyota driver in eighth."Was it only five overtimes? It felt like a dozen," Grala said. The race was zipping right along and dominated by the combination of Kyle Larson, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott. Then a late accident sent the race to overtime.Larson, who led a race-high 61 laps, tried to block Aric Almirola after the restart and the contact caused Larson to spin and trigger an 18-car accident.Logano, who had led 28 laps, was also knocked out in the race.

It was worth the wait.

After the Xfinity Series race needed to go to a fifth overtime attempt Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway, the margin of victory between Tyler Reddick and Elliott Sadler ended up being 0.000 seconds, officially the closest finish in NASCAR national series history.
Officials had to review photo evidence to declare Reddick the winner over his JR Motorsports teammate.

“He did a really good job of coming down on me right at the last minute to slow me down enough to get to me,” Sadler said. “But I still thought we were really at the line, which we were. But I didn’t know. I just didn’t know, and it’s hard to tell a lot of times with the angle that you’ve got [in the car].
"When my spotter came on the radio and said it was the 9 car, my balloon got deflated pretty quick.”
Said Reddick, “That was insane. I just saw a picture of it 10 minutes ago and it’s not much. … It just came down to the side draft.”
The previous closest finish was a 1995 Camping World Truck Series race at Colorado National Speedway where the margin was 0.001 seconds.

Enter the world of stock car racing in the late 1950s. In "The Famous Measured Mile", a film presented by the Perfect Circle Corporation, gorgeous cars are modified within regulation rules and pitted against each other in the most grueling test of speed, safety and ingenuity. Immediately followed by an announcer narrated play by play of the 42nd Annual Indianapolis 500. These guys endure all 500 laps bending around curves at 140 miles an hour and navigating through obstacles as other vehicles spin out of control and crash around them. This is a real treat for any car lover who enjoys top speed cruising, skilled driving and automotive ingenuity. The film starts out featuring the sands of Daytona Beach where performance stock racing takes place, we soon see the Air Force Tthunderbirds followed by the Daytona Beach speed safety test and some old school racing. At Mechanic / hobbyist welding a vehicle guys working under the hood while narrating lists what forbidden and legal modifications that lighten the car and increase safety in case of emergency during the race. cars are out for test runs on back roads. Opening up the vehicle at top speeds and brought to the beach to test vehicle and gain mastery for the driver. Driver explains the route as we watch dash came footage. Once testing is done we’re treated to anotherThunderbird salute as the cars line up. Cars set up for 80 laps at 120+ miles an hour for top performing vehicles. Race begins. It’s shocking and chilling too see how close crowds were allowed to gather near the sand filled track with cars fishtailing and spinning out of control. The crashes are fantastic as the vehicles really go head to head vying for space and an edge into the lead on the narrowest turns in the track. Goldsmith’s #3 Pontiac is incredibly aggressive on the track looking to maintain his position in first. The drivers go in for a victory lap, flanked by fans on all sides. The 42nd International 500-Mile Sweepstakes was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday, May 30, 1958. The event was part of the 1958 USAC National Championship Trail, and was included in the 1958 World Drivers Championship. The race is best known for a massive first-lap, 15-car pileup that resulted in the death of fan-favorite driver Pat O'Connor. Jimmy Bryan was the race winner. The race featured young rookie A. J. Foyt's debut at Indy. On lap 148, he spun in an oil slick, blew out the tires, and dropped out of the race. This marked the first time that one car would carry two drivers to separate wins at the race, in back-to-back years, with Sam Hanks winning the previous years race in the same car. Juan Manuel Fangio arrived at Indy under much fanfare as he attempted to qualify for the 500 and score points towards the World Championship. He practiced early in the month, but withdrew when he could not get up to speed. Indianapolis 500 roadsters begin rolling in. Annual race with more formalized setting in stands and marching band. Each of the drivers are introduced. Balloons are released as the crowd silences and attention is turned to the track. The purring of the motors is exhilarating as the cars are anxious to go and the parade lap begins. The race begins and we watch the cars speed around the bends. The announcer excitedly calls out the driver’s movements and a catastrophic spin out takes out 14 cars littered all over the field. The mechanics, with no radios, don’t know what’s happening. Russo gets into the pit and announces the crash. 97 is totaled. Russo gets his boys going as he works on his car with them to get back in the race. He’s in! The cars are bending around the curves again, much fewer cars, pacing at 141 mph. Cars are passing left and right as the lead struggles to maintain his position. It’s an all-out dog fight on the track. Watch as the pit crews use vintage tools to quickly get the cars retooled and onto the track in record times (29 seconds). close up of a driver whose face is completely exposed to the elements, covered in dirt. 46 second pit stop ends as 1st place car, Brian, keeps his lead Boyd enters the pits The total race is 375 miles, as the skill and engineering put themselves through the rigor of the hours long race. Cars begin spinning our as the wear takes its toll on driver and car. Brian and Amick get through the last two laps as the leaders The race ends for the 42nd Indianapolis 500 Jimmy Brian promotes the piston ring from his sponsor. Singer closes out the video singing about cars This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2k. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com
