IndyCar drivers not behind push-to-pass at IMS.

Push to pass is also push so you don't pass me.......has anyone thought of that? When he nails the gas to pass you, you nail the gas to keep him from passing you. Did we forget that from last time?

The push-to-pass test Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway didn’t get rave reviews from the four drivers on hand, but it did get their attention.

Experimenting with more boost for the 2023 engine, Josef Newgarden, Alex Rossi, Pato O’Ward and Scott Dixon ran alone and together in a pack to gauge the affects of the additional horsepower.

“I’m not sure if it was 50 or 60 more horsepower; the manufacturers never tell us. But using the longer variation of P2P, it jumped our speed up 5-6-7 mph. With the draft, you arrive at the corner 10 mph faster than normal, and I think we all had some, ‘Oh crap!’ moments because it’s not what we’re use to,” said Dixon after parking his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda for the day.

“I’m not a big fan of overtake on a super speedway because we’re all very vulnerable and sometimes crazy situations (arise) that aren’t necessarily good and might make the racing worse. It’s going to raise the speed and abuse the tires, so there are lots of questions to answer.”

Rossi is not a fan of push-to-pass at IMS either following his run in the Andretti Autosport Honda, and he had a solid reason.

“Indy is always a fuel-saving race and nobody is going to use theirs until the end. Then everyone is going to use it to defend, so it’s not going to change anything,” explained the 2016 Indy 500 winner.

Newgarden represented Chevrolet (along with McLaren’s O’Ward), and said it was a learning experience in his Penske machine.

“It was an interesting day, a data-gathering day. We ran the car in a couple configurations with some good cars, and there were some good parts and some not so good,” said the two-time IndyCar king. “I don’t know that you necessarily need it here at Indianapolis, that’s my initial feeling. Maybe we try to implement it at a short oval.”

Newgarden was more impressed with what this May could bring.

“The hole in the underwing is filled, we’ve got strakes on the car, and there are more aero parts you can play with as a team. I think we’re all looking forward to that.”

Get to know Lee Anne Patterson, one of the few women working in IndyCar during the 1990s. Prior to IndyCar, Patterson led promotions at Sonoma Raceway and ran the Shelby Can-Am feeder series, then took part in her first Indy 500 in 1996 as a team co-owner; helped introduce Sam Schmidt to IndyCar and launch Sam’s team – known today as Arrow McLaren SP – in 2001; and now is working with an Indy Autonomous Challenge team from her home state of Georgia.

IMS Museum Exhibit Celebrates Rick Mears’ Fourth Indy 500 Win

Indianapolis, IN — The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is counting down to the May 2 opening of “Rocket Rick Mears presented by Racemaker Press,” a new feature exhibit honoring an Indianapolis 500 living legend. It runs through March 2022.

The exhibit will offer context on Mears’ formative years and what molded him as a driver and humble champion, as well as his early struggles to gain a foothold in Indy Car racing and his comebacks from serious injuries in 1980 and 1984 — plus the artifacts and race cars central to his career:

— Indy-winning cars: the 1979 Gould Charge Penske PC6; the 1984 Pennzoil Z7 March 84C; the 1988 Pennzoil Penske PC17 and the 1991 Marlboro Penske PC20

— the 1982 Gould Charge PC10, part of the famous 1982 Indy 500 race-ending duel between Mears and Gordon Johncock, who beat Mears by only .16 of a second

— the 1977 Eastside Café Special Eagle — the car in which Mears first attempted to qualify at Indianapolis

— Mears’ 1976 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb-winning car and several examples of Roger and Rick’s championship off-road racing vehicles

Adding to the display are video, photographs and artifacts from the IMS Museum collection, plus items loaned by Mears, the Penske collection and other collectors.

When Mears earned his fourth Indianapolis 500 victory in 1991 after dueling with Michael Andretti in the waning laps, he joined A.J. Foyt and Al Unser in the four-timer winners club. Mears’ other victories at Indy were in 1979, 1984 and 1988.

Mears earned victory number four in only his 14th “500” start, while Foyt earned his historic fourth win in his 20th Indy start, and Unser achieved four-time glory in his 22nd start. And 30 years after earning his final Indianapolis 500 pole position, Mears still holds the record for the most-career “500” poles, with six (1979, ’82, ’86, ’88, ’89, ’91).

At various points during his 80 years, he was the spoiled brat of an Indy 500 driver, an up and coming IndyCar mechanic, a damn good sprint car driver, a fine fabricator, a foil for A.J. Foyt and a bully of USAC’s sprint division with Pancho Carter (main image, with Stapp in 1974). He was a good husband to Rosemary and father to Suzanne and Andy. He survived crashing a sprinter on his 70th birthday, being run over by a train and other old-age maladies.

But the essence of Steve Stapp is that he was a racer to the core, a friend to all and a man who never met a conversation he couldn’t hijack.

The Bopper, who died in his sleep Friday in his Brownsburg home, was one of those characters that made every day an adventure and most days a lot of fun. His storytelling was so entertaining until you looked at your watch and realized he’d been yapping for an hour. Of course, that’s why so many people loved Stapp and hanging out with him.

Fathered by Babe Stapp, a 12-time starter at Indianapolis, Steve always admitted he was incorrigible as a kid and once kicked Indy winner and perennial nice guy Johnnie Parsons in the shins. But he caught the racing fever and was running a sprinter by the time he was 21, and the highlight came at Terre Haute in 1960 when he broke Foyt’s track record.

He promised Rosemary he’d stop driving in those lethal 1960s when they had their first child, and that set him in motion to become a respected and in-demand mechanic for the big cars. He was helping A.J. at Milwaukee with his dirt car in 1965 when he recalled a memorable exchange.

“I’ve got a stopwatch and I’m timing him and he’s quicker than all the rear-engine cars, so when he pulls in after practice I tell him the good news, and he cusses me out and said I was either blind or stupid. So I threw the watch at him and told him to go time himself because he was the great A.J. Foyt. After he won the pole, things settled down.”

Yet the turning point for Stapp came in 1973, when he asked a young hot-shoe named Carter to drive his sprinter at Knoxville. Driving for The Bopper didn’t come with a lot of job security since he was liable to fire a driver at any time. “I knew about his reputation, but I also knew that (Larry) Dickson and J.R. (Johnny Rutherford) had driven for him and he had good cars,” said Carter.

Thus began an amazing run of success and bickering for the next four years as Carter/Stapp claimed the 1974 and 1976 sprint titles while 40 of Pancho’s 42 victories in sprinters were in a Stapp chassis.

“I had my way and he had his, and we argued back and forth so we just agreed to disagree and it worked,” said Carter with a chuckle. “Steve was a great fabricator with a good knack for setting a car up, and he relied a lot on what he’d done as a driver and it was a good combination.

“It was the best time of my career because we couldn’t be beat and everyone really wanted to beat us, and Stapp loved that.”
