Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones idolized him before they became legends while A.J. RACER's Robin Miller looks back at a checkered career that ended when Ruttman was only 34.

1953: Bill Vukovich
1953 INDIANAPOLIS 500 RACE "THE HOTTEST 500" 75814

Produced by the Perfect Circle Corporation as a publicity project in 1954, THE HOTTEST 500 shows the 1953 Indy 500 won by Bill Vukovich in 120-plus degree heat. The 1953 race was infamous as one of the most memorable on record, with more relief drivers used than in any other year. Tragically, driver Carl Scarborough actually died of heat prostration. Bill Vukovich, who led in 1952 but ended up losing due to a mechanical failure with his car, led almost the entire race and ended up taking the checkered flag. The highlights shown in the film include time trials with Vukovich qualifying. The film also shows pit row and various work on the cars, and footage of various drivers including Tony Bettenhausen, Freddie Agabashian, Jack McGrath, Paul Russo, Duane Carter, Duke Nalon and Marshall Teague, The race ends nearly after nearly four hours with Vukovich in the victory circle. We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example like: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference." Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2k. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com

NASCAR Legend Smokey Yunick prepared this car. Click here, scroll down around posts 79-80.
https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/g...history-2.html

This is the 44th Indianapolis 500, run on May 30, 1960.Although I use the host segments that Brock Yates used from "Faces of Victory: Memories of Indy" on the 1960 race portion of that program, the vast majority of this program came from the Indy 500: The Classics episode that dealt with the 1960 race, which explains why there's no mention of the "car #10" dropping out that Brock mentions in the opening of this presentation.

Because the majority of this presentation comes from the speedway's official film of the race (which was the first the speedway ever did), most of it's in black and white, as the speedway didn't film the race in color until 1961. Also, qualifications are extensively covered, including Jim Hurtubise's record run that earned him Rookie of the Year honors for the race. Also seen during the qualifying coverage are Tommy Milton, the first two-time winner of the race (1921, '23) and actor Jim Garner, who would drive the pace car multiple times in the 70s and 80s.

As for the race, it's considered by many to be the greatest Indianapolis 500 ever run, even to this day, with five drivers swapping the lead a total of 29 times officially, a record that wasn't broken until last year (2012). Among those swapping the lead were pole sitter Eddie Sachs, 1959 pole sitter Johnny Thomson, 1952 winner Troy Ruttman, defending champion Rodger Ward, and 3-time runner-up Jim Rathmann.

But Ward's and Rathmann's cars were the best, as they swapped the lead at will during the second half of the race. Ruttman and Sachs dropped out, while Thomson had engine problems late inthe race while gaining on the first two, forcing him to slow down dramatically, dropping him to fifth behind NASCAR driver Paul Goldsmith and Don Branson.

But in the end, tire and race strategy would finally allow Rathmann to upend Ward and finally win the race after 12 years of trying. Incidentally, one of Rathmann's chief mechanics was none other than Smokey Yunick, who had already won championships in NASCAR with Herb Thomas (with considerable help from another Indy legend, three-time winner Mauri Rose), and would win the next two Daytona 500s with Marvin Panch and Fireball Roberts.

And from the front to the back, Dempsey Wilson gained infamy by being the first driver in Indianapolis 500 history to start last and finish last in the same race.

All credits go to SPEED (SpeedVision, the predecessor to the current SPEED channel, originally aired all parts of this presentation), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, USAC, and Championship Racefilms.

If there are any others who I'm forgetting, please let me know so I can add them to the list of those to credit.

cjs83172
@eriq affandi, what happened was that on his first pit stop, Rodger Ward stalled his car coming out of the pits, which cost him a lot of time, which his car was fast enough to make up, enabling him to engage Jim Rathmann in that duel for the entire second half of the race. Then in the closing laps, both Rathmann and Ward ran their cars hard, putting excessive wear on their tires, which was an important thing at Indy back then because they had to make their tires last for one-quarter of the race, since they usually pitted around laps 50, 100, and 150 for fuel, and because the cars were so heavy and the tires so thin (they were using tires first developed in the 1920s), tire wear became a frequent concern. What ended up happening was that, with four laps remaining, the cords came through on Ward's right front tire, and he saw it, so he slowed down to make sure of finishing, and would up second. And actually, of all the races he ran at Indianapolis, and he ran 15, Ward said that this race from 1960 was his best, even though he didn't win and did win two other times. Tire wear would also decide the race the following year, with Eddie Sachs not willing to risk running the last three laps on a corded right front tire, so he decided to pit from the lead instead of gambling on his tire lasting, which handed that race to A.J. Foyt, the first of his four Indy wins. But when the track was repaved following the 1961 race, tire wear ceased to be a factor, and it really has never been a factor in the Indianapolis 500 since, and because the cars now have to pit more frequently (every 25-30 laps), tire wear is likely never to be a factor in the Indianapolis 500 again.

Eisert #001 is the oldest remaining mid-engined American Indy Car, the revolution that changed the race forever. It represents one of the finest eras of Indy history, the last where a regular guy with a dream could build a car and compete against the world’s best. A time where the cars became brutally fast but were still uncomplicated and fun to drive. No downforce. No exotic engines. No computers. Just a builder, a driver and a dream.
One of those combinations was Frank Harrison and Jerry Eisert. In 1964 Harrison commissioned Eisert to build a brand-new Indy car. Based on the very successful Formula One Lotus chassis design, the result was called the "Harrison Special.” Its history, while not a winning one, is one of two guys building a new car and taking a hard swing for the fence and making a damn good show of it. Car #001 was raced in 1965 as #96 by Canadian Billy Foster after Skip Hudson failed his rookie test in the car. Al Unser then took over driving duties but was also not fast enough to qualify the new car for the big show. Undeterred, Foster later finished 11th at the Phoenix 150 on March 28th, and 7th at the Trenton 100 on April 25th in #001. Johnny Rutherford then ran the car at the Milwaukee 100 on June 6th 1965, finishing 15[SUP]th[/SUP]. In 1966 the car made a second appearance at the Indy 500 as the #69 Arciero Brothers car with driver Ronnie Bucknum but again failed to qualify. Eisert #001 returned to Indy with Otto Becker for the last time in 1968 as the #46 "Lotus Chevrolet Special."
The mid-engine revolution this car helped usher in didn’t go unnoticed and #001 was featured on the cover of the May 1965 issue of Sports Car Graphic magazine, with a 6 page feature article inside that included a cutaway drawing.
After many years in retirement the car has been painstakingly restored to its 1966 "Arciero Brothers" Indy 500 livery. It retains its original chassis, body, and Corvette small block race engine de-stroked to 302 CI. It now produces 485 HP at 7,500 RPM with its correct Enderle Fuel Injection, Joe Hunt Magneto, and dry sump oiling system. The original Mickey Thompson valve covers fitted by Eisert with his hand stamped valve lash and timing instructions are still in place, as is the original Colotti Type 37 4-speed gearbox and its original four-wheel disc brakes with Girling BR racing calipers and vented rotors.
It has been thoroughly sorted by Newman-Haas Racing’s former championship winning Chief Mechanic, Don Hoevel. Properly set up for historic road race use it has also been fitted with an onboard starter and battery, and tuned to run on gasoline rather than methanol. It has raced in the vintage Indy Car event during the 2009 Indy 500, the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2009, the HAWK with Brian Redman at Road America in 2012, and shown at the invitational "Stars of Indy" at the 2013 Barrington Concours.
Most recently it was one of the five historic Indy Cars chosen to represent the 100[SUP]-year[/SUP] anniversary of the Indy 500 by Road & Track Magazine for their May 2016 cover story entitled “Dancing With Giants.” As a part of this story, Eisert #001 was tested at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where it performed flawlessly. It was also the cover car for the issue.
Unlike most vintage racecars it is also extremely original retaining most of its original components. But most importantly it has been restored, prepared, and sorted regardless of cost into a reliable and extremely fun and easy to drive vintage racecar. Unlike later cars, with its Chevy V-8, robust chassis, and simple construction it is also easy to maintain.
Road & Track writer Sam Smith stated after driving it at Indy: “It’s a Formula Ford on steroids. You’re one with the car. It has the grip, the brakes, and Hand of God power. And that sound! You can’t help but want to race it. I’m hooked.”

INDY '65 the untold story
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WFZKcYH-uw
Fifty years ago - on May 31, 1965 - Memorial Day in the USA - Jim Clark secured the first half of his historic achievement with Team Lotus. In becoming the first "Foreigner" to win at Indy since Dario Resta in 1916 - and the first to win in a rear-engined car - Clark set the scene for a double-whammy that will never be repeated. Clark would go on to secure the F1 World Championship that same year with a stunning series of wins but in May, 50 years ago, all his focus was on Indy - on rocking the establishment and changing the way the Americans went racing. Here, for the first time, Jim Clark's mechanic for the month of May - Australia's Jim Smith - looks back at that epic time. A marine engineer who captured the attention of Colin Chapman while he was back-packing in the UK, Jim is a no-nonsense Aussie who perfectly complemented the brilliance of Clark and Chapman. He remained a friend of Jim''s long after he left Team Lotus and today resides in Sydney, where we spoke. For more images of Jim Clark's 1965 Month of May, visit http://peterwindsor.com

REAR VIEW: The neutered turbine

Thursday, 01 December 2016

Robin Miller / Images by IMS Photo, Marshall Pruett
When:
1969

Where: Indianapolis Motor Speedway
What: Qualifying
Who: Al Miller & Jack Adams' turbine

Even though Parnelli Jones and Joe Leonard fell agonizingly short of Victory Lane, their turbine-powered cars scared the hell out of the United States Auto Club in 1967 and 1968. So by the time 1969 rolled around, that engine had been neutered.

The annulus area started at 25.9 inches in '67 and was chopped all the way to 11.8 by May of '69 when veteran Al Miller arrived at IMS to drive Jack Adams' car, which was designed by Professor Glenn Bryant and sported an Allison aircraft engine. It was a slender, cigar-shaped chassis more than four feet longer than a conventional car.
It looked like some kind of missile but, sadly, was lost in space.
Miller, a four-time Indy starter, could only go 180mph on the straightaways while his piston-engine competition was cresting 210mph. He did manage to qualify at 156.440, but that wound up being 4mph too slow and was bumped.
It wouldn't have mattered anyway, because USAC disqualified the run a few hours later when it was found Miller's team had tried to cheat the intake rule.
"That's laughable," Miller said afterward. "We supposedly broke the rules and we're still 4mph too slow because the thing is such a pig down the straightaway."
Adams returned in 1970 with Jigger Sirois in a different turbine, but he could only run 157 mph, and that proved to be the final act at Indy for the quiet engine that made a lot of noise but never won a race.

[h=2]Al Unser's improbable fourth Indy win[/h] By Robin Miller

The Vegas odds of Al Unser winning the 1987 Indianapolis 500 were off the charts, literally and figuratively, because the three-time winner had no ride during the first week of practice.

"It was the first time I'd ever come to Indy without a ride and I was just hanging around but it was boring, and I told myself if I didn't have a ride by a certain day then I was going back to Albuquerque," he recalled 30 years later. "And then Danny got hurt."
After Danny Ongais piled into the wall on May 7, the day before qualifying began, he suffered a concussion and was expected to be on the sidelines a few days but was ruled out of action six days later by the IMS medical staff.
So, like he did in 1985 when Rick Mears was recovering from his 1984 injuries, Roger Penske went to the bullpen and called in his ace reliever who had captured the '85 CART championship.
Of course they had to find Big Al a car and that required going to Reading, Pa. and pulling a year-old March off the floor of a motel where it was on display. And since there were no more new Chevrolets available in The Captain's stable, an old Cosworth was fitted into the No. 25 Cummins Special.
Unser qualified 20th and barely drew a second glance from anyone in Gasoline Alley because all eyes were on Mario Andretti and his Lola-Chevy. He'd won the pole position by two mph and nobody figured to have a chance.
Al's race was almost over before it started as Josele Garza (No. 55, pictured) spun right in front of him on the opening lap and somehow he avoided contact. "I had to decide whether to lock it up and spin or try and out-race him to the short chute, so I did and thankfully he missed me," he continued.
Andretti led 170 of the first 177 laps, owned a one-lap lead over second-place Roberto Guerrero and was two laps clear of Unser, whose usual pick 'em off one at a time pace had thrust him into third.
"I got my car working pretty good but let's not kid anyone, Mario had us all covered," he declared afterward.
But Andretti's ignition failed with 23 laps to go and that left Guerrero only one pit stop away from drinking the winner's milk before a faulty clutch caused the car to stall not once, but twice, and by the time he rejoined the action he was a lap behind Unser. The kid from Colombia who was so good so fast at Indianapolis roared back to unlap himself but was 4.4 seconds behind the old man at the checkered flag.
Big Al joined A.J. Foyt as a four-time winner and it easily one of the most improbable triumphs ever – but not because of the driver.
"It was the best one," he admitted after becoming the oldest (4 winner ever. "Not so much because it was #4 but because I was older and because of the crazy circumstances of the month.
"I still have trouble believing I won that one."
