Default Classic 12 Hour of Sebring, Pistons and Props, December 1 - 4 2016

Stars and cars arrive for Classic 12 Hours of Sebring
HSR

Racing champions of the past and present, and an amazing lineup of legendary racecars from the last 50 years will descend upon Sebring International Raceway this week for the inaugural Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, December 1-4.
Officially entitled the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network, this weekend's event pays homage to the iconic Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring that celebrates its 65th running this March.
Modeled after the instantly popular Classic 24 Hour at Daytona presented by IMSA, which was run for the first time in 2014 and 2015 on the road course at Daytona International Speedway, the Classic 12 Hour will see HSR competitors from all corners of the globe race in tribute to the grueling half-day Sebring event.
Among the international racing legends participating include 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jochen Mass, Andy Wallace, Butch Leitzinger, Frank Stippler, Ollie Bryant, Chris Dyson, Randy Pobst and recently crowned IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Prototype Co-Champion Eric Curran.
Mass will be driving a classic 1969 Ferrari 365 Daytona, while Wallace returns to the same Rogers Motorsports 2005 Audi R8 LMS he co-drove to victory in the inaugural Classic 24 Hour in 2014 with Doug Smith.
Leitzinger co-drove with Smith to a Classic 24 Hour repeat in the Audi last year at Daytona but will co-drive an Oreca FLM09 "PC" car with Juan Gonzalez at Sebring.

Curran, who clinched the IMSA Prototype crown with co-driver Dane Cameron just last month, will coach several Hudson Historics Corvette Daytona Prototype competitors, including co-driving one of the Vettes with teammate William Hubbell.
Dyson will compete in a Dyson Racing 2000 Lola/MG B01/60 while German GT driver Stippler will co-drive a 2006 Ford GT Mk7 with Georg Nolte.
Bryant, who co-drove a GTE-Am-class Corvette in this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans with Johnny O'Connell and Mark Patterson, returns to HSR competition for the Classic 12 Hour. Bryant and his father, Grahame Bryant, will share their big-bore 1967 Camaro Z/28.
The equally impressive racing machines these drivers and other to Classic 12 Hour competitors will race at Sebring is a rolling collection of top sports cars and prototypes from the past 50 years.
Classic 12 Hour competition will be divided between six distinct and period-correct Run Groups, each showcasing different eras of race cars, many of which were raced in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in their prime.
Group A: 1952-1972: The oldest and perhaps most memory-stirring division, Group A features such legendary race cars as the Ford GT40, Lola T70, Chevron B16, McLaren M1B, Lotus 23B and a full lineup of production-based GT machines that includes a Ferrari 365 Daytona, Alfa Romeo GT Jr., several 1960s-era Corvettes and Mustangs and a strong field of early Porsche 911s. Two entries of note from the United Kingdom are the 1965 Ginetta of Ron Maydon and the extremely rare 1963 Aston Martin DP214 of Robert Rawe.
Group B: 1973-1982: Evoking the same emotion and memories of Group A with a little more turbo-power and wide-body aerodynamics, Group B is another showcase of memorable prototypes and GT machines. Notables include a March 75S, Chevron B23/36 and a 1970s era Greenwood Corvette and De Tomaso Ford Pantera. Among the European competitors making the trip to Sebring to race in Group B are Gilles Boyer and his 1973 Porsche RSR from France and a 1976 Porsche 935 driven by Belgian Nico Verdonck and Germany's Altfrid Heger.
Group C: 1983-1993: The prime of the IMSA GTP and Group C era is at the heart of Group C. The group includes everything from a Porsche 962 to a Nissan GTP-ZX-T to several early-generation Porsche 964 Cup cars. One entry that will likely be making the first appearance at Sebring for a car of its type is the 1992 Toyota 94CV of Gerard Lopez. The Lopez entry is one of several race cars competing in the Classic 12 Hour from Art & Revs of Luxembourg.
Group D: 1994-2002: Historic but familiar, the highlight machines in Group D include a Riley & Scott Mk III and a Lola B2K/40S. Period-correct GT race cars also have a place in Group D, and such production-based machines include an Oldsmobile Aurora GTS, BMW M3 and several Porsche 993 and 996 RSR, GT3R and Evo models.
Group E: 2003-2012: Featuring everything from Audi R8 LMPs that were winning races and championships over 10 years ago, to a full lineup of recently retired Daytona Prototypes, Group E is a showcase of modern prototype and GT sports cars. Two Audi R8s and a Pescarolo 01 LMP highlight the group, which also includes the Dyson Lola/MG B01/60, several Oreca FLM09 "PC" race cars and ample modern GT machines such as the Audi R8 LMS and various Porsche GT3 Cup cars. A rare entry is the 2001 Chrysler Dallara LMP900, another race car from Art & Revs that will appear at Sebring for the first time in the hands of Florent Moulin.

Group F: HSR Cars: Home to HSR classes that are not represented in the other five groups, Group F also lets competitors with race cars that were never eligible to compete at Sebring a chance to build a little history of their own on the legendary track in the Classic 12 Hour. The wide array of machinery has race cars from the last six decades, including everything from big-bore 1960s pony cars like Mustangs and Camaros to the usual mix of Porsches from all generations.
The entry list for the 2016 Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic 12 Hour at Sebring is available by clicking here.
Classic 12 Hour event updates, race format information, the official event schedule, event class breakdown, run groups and more information is all available on the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring web site by clicking here.
The Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, is also a celebration of the lasting connection between legendary race cars and Sebring's rich aviation history. The on-track and on-the-runways Classic 12 Hour celebration pays tribute to both the legendary auto race and historic Hendricks Field, the iconic military and civil aviation facility on which the 12-hour event is run every year.
Still in part an active airport, the Classic 12 Hour, Pistons and Props, will see vintage aircraft land on one of the Sebring runways and taxi into the paddock to be displayed right alongside the historic race cars. A group of race car drivers will be asked to judge the planes for "best in show" honor and much more.
Sebring's motorsports heritage began with the running of the Sam Collier Six Hour Memorial Grand Prix on December 31, 1950. Founder and Promoter Alec Ulmann then established the first 12 Hours of Sebring in 1952. The race quickly evolved into one of America's most important international road racing events.
Joining event presenting sponsor, the Alan Jay Automotive Network, and JSI Logistics as partners of the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, is leading vintage and historic motorsports publication Classic Motorsports Magazine.
Using the same program in place at the successful HSR Classic Motorsports Mitty each April at Road Atlanta, Classic Motorsports will support the Classic 12 Hours of Sebring with car club corrals, sponsor and spectator promotions, vendor areas and much more.
The Sebring event weekend also includes the season-ending events for the 2016 HSR sprint and enduro series, including the year-end awards celebration.
Tickets for the Classic 12 Hour of Sebring, Pistons and Props, December 1 - 4, are available in the ticket and credential office near the Sebring International Raceway main gate.

HSR: Close Group A battle at Classic Racecar 12 Hours of Sebring

Sunday, 04 December 2016 HSR
Night racing and a parade of vintage airplanes came to the inaugural Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Classic 12 Hour at Sebring on Saturday where a full schedule of day and nighttime racing segments were watched by one of the biggest crowds to ever attend an HSR race at Sebring International Raceway.

Officially titled the Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network and Classic Motorsports, this weekend's inaugural event is an on-track and on-the-runways celebration of the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring auto race and historic Hendricks Field, the iconic military and civil aviation facility on which the race is run every year.
Kicking off today's Classic 12 Hour schedule was Group A for 1960's era sports cars. The field fired up its engines at the command of John Hendricks, grandson of Hendricks Field namesake Lieutenant Laird W. Hendricks, Jr. This year marks both the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the airfield and what would have been Lieutenant Laird's 100th birthday.

Group A has developed into a dogfight that would make any flying ace proud. The 1969 Lola T70s of Gerard Lopez and co-driver Franz Wallenborn and the similar No. 77 machine of Toni Seiler are just one lap ahead of the 1969 No. 186 Chevron B16 of Martin Lauber and Malte Muller-Wrede.
The No. 10 Lopez/Wallenborn Lola won both the day and nighttime segments on Saturday and, like Seiler's T70, has completed 51 laps. The No. 186 Chevron has completed 50 laps, and all three entries have a chance to take the overall Group A win in Sunday morning's fourth and final 42-minute segment.

Things aren't as close in Group B where John Harrold enlisted winning professional driver Randy Pobst to co-drive his Team Mean 1979 No. 94 Chevron B in the Classic 12 Hour. Pobst drove both Saturday segments and he and Harrold head into tomorrow's Group B finale with a healthy four-lap lead on the field in the KMW Motorsports prepared Chevron.
The Group D leader is the 1996 No. 4 Riley & Scott MkIII of Rick Carlino and Derek Jones that has completed 52 laps and swept all three segments despite a steady challenge from brothers Hunter Harris and Hamilton Harris. The Harris twins co-drive a 2000 Lola B2K/40S, have stayed on the same lap as the Riley & Scott and will no doubt take the Group D battle down to the wire in Sunday's final segment.
Group D is sharing the track with Group C, which has developed into an all-Porsche 964 Cup car battle. With 47 laps completed, Alan Benjamin and co-driver Robert Ames lead Group D in their 1990 No. 17 964, just ahead of the similar No. 931 1993 model of Alex Welch and Alexandra Sabados, which is on the same lap.
With 2015 Le Mans 24 Hour LMP2 winning co-driver Richard Bradley in his camp, the GMT Racing 2007 No. 18 Pescarolo Judd LMP of David Porter has opened up a decent lead in Group E. The No. 18 is two laps ahead of nearest challengers Butch Leitzinger and Juan Gonzalez, who co-drive the 2010 No. 52 Oreca FLM09, and the similar No. 11 "PC" car of Keith Frieser.
Before Classic 12 Hour competition began on Saturday, an impressive parade of Vintage Airplanes taxied along the Sebring race course to a full-display area in the infield. The collection includes World War II era aircraft such as a BT-9, P40 Warhawk, two Stearman PT-17s, a Vultee BT-15 Valiant and a Beech C-45 named "Beech Baby."
