Default Good things from GM 6.0 engines, C6 supercars

Corvette. Details are emerging about the all-new, 2005 C6 (sixth generation) Corvette that will be introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. Though the new chassis is now shared with another car (the Cadillac XLR luxury sports car) for the first time in Corvette history - the two cars have distinctly different missions and differ substantially from each other. The new Corvette is five inches shorter than the C5 in overall length but retains the same interior room. The overall road presence of the new C6 exterior design and stance is improved dramatically – certainly enough to make C5 owners drool over it and feel compelled to get one. But the new car should turn heads of non-Corvette-owning enthusiasts, too, because of its improved quality, upscale interior materials and outstanding performance capability. The standard 6.0-liter V-8 will now deliver 400HP and around 400 lb-ft of torque, just under the 405HP figure of the current ultra-performance Z06 C5. The front tires will be 245/40ZR 18s, mounted on 8.5" wheels. The rears will be 285/35ZR 19s, mounted on 10.0" wheels. The Z51 Option for '05 will include bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, specifically tweaked tires, gear ratios, springs, shocks and sway bars, plus an engine oil cooler and a power-steering cooler for serious off-road performance work. Other details: the HUD on the new car will have a built-in G-meter, a power top will finally be available (long overdue) on the convertible, and a six CD in-dash changer will be an option, as will an onboard navigation system. There's no official confirmation (yet), but there's also a "super" C6 rumored to be on the way with 600+HP (with assistance from McLaren engines). This super C6 will take Corvette's classic performance-value-for-the-dollar equation to new heights and could potentially embarrass all of the other high-priced supercars from around the globe in the process. The "super" C6 will cost more than the standard car by a bunch, but it may still come in at "around" $100,000, undercutting even the Ford GT in cost. And its performance is said to be simply mind-boggling, making even hardcore enthusiasts weak in the knees. The "super" C6 will not appear before mid-2006 at the earliest, but it may be considered enough of a milestone car in the pantheon of great Corvettes to wear the storied "ZL1" designation. Stay tuned...

Soo 600hp but a price tag around $100k? Thanks GM for abandoning the enthusiast market and moving "upscale".

It aight so bad.. i plan on being rich by then... We can always take out a house mortgage to buy one.
The super c6 isnt any different from the ZR1 back in the day... Even though the ZR1 was cheaper it wasnt that much cheaper when you throw in standard of living and inflation into the equation.
Help designed my lotus... so the C6 is helped along by Mclaren...
Im happy to see the C6 go up in quality and power.. Its already awesome that the C5's make more expensive performance cars look silly in general.
Now we can just make em look stupid.
I think i'll start saving for one now actually... Hopefully i can save a little quicker this time took me many years to save up for a big down on my camaro.

I am impressed!
A new vette with all the goodies is nearly 50k now. Z06 is certainly above that.

And the 100k supervette will probably be a twin turbo done in conjunction with Lingenfelter or the rumored 3 valve per cylinder motor done with Mclaren or something along those lines. Just like the Rousch's and Saleen's.

Lets see...a 60k Rousch that runs 12.9s at 112 mph or a 100k Vette that will run low 11s at 130 mph. I know which one Id like

Anyways...I was actually thinking along different lines. Im a gearhead and Im commited to my SS platform for years to come. All this 6.0 and larger stuff, better heads, better intakes will all share the same basic architecture of the base LS1. Basically I am going to go faster and faster for cheaper the more this LSx stuff stays around. Woohoo...the future looks bright for modding LS1 based cars.

Al has a point. If the new 6.0L alum block pumps out pretty good #'s base. That is good news for us. The 346ci LS1/LS6 is already getting closer and closer to that 500rwhp mark. I am talking about a highly streetable car here. At this rate going to a 382 Alum would be 500rwhp no matter what with a crazier amount of torque. I think they should keep playing with the LS1/LS6 based platforms. It only makes us faster..

Zate where do you get the 03 Cobra is the better bang for the buck? Can a 03 Cobra keep up with a Z06 at Sebring? It can barely keep up with a Z28 at Sebring. Z06 is less than 3100lbs. 03 Cobra is over 3600lbs. Z06 gets 28mpg on the highway. 03 Cobra is barely getting 20mpg on the highway. No 03 Cobra runs the same exact low 12's as a stock 03 Z06. You want to talk about best bang for the buck. Lets look at a 02 Z28. By the time you get to 35k. You can have a 427ci in the car pushing 550rwhp. A base 02 Z28 goes for 23 to 24k.. Just adding a cam, Mac Headers, tuning and valvesprings puts you at 40rwhp more horsepower than the 03 Cobra stock. You ask how much for those mods.. Less than 1500 bucks. Guess what? You are still under 25k invested in the car and have 10k to go to get to the initial cost of a 03 Cobra. I really do not know why they even compare the 03 Cobra to a Z06. There is no comparison. This IJMO.

this "super vette" wont ever see day light. a $100k vette, IMHO, will be a huge loss. i just dont think many people will go for it, especially at $100k. for upgraded parts, and a better motor, it should be no more than $60-80k. look at the new viper. 550hp less then $100k. GM needs to take it slower. id love to see a 600+hp vette, but why would i spend an extra $50k when i can take that money and drop into the C6 and make any hp figure i want too. (can u say twin turbo )

Al, do u know if the new motors will be camless? as rumored to be previously?
