Default pontiac grand prix, sputtering wont go over 3 grand

hi, Just wondering if any one could help me go in the right direction. I have had a scanner hooked up to the car and it threw no codes. Some times, more often than not tho my car will jerk and sputter not allowing me to go over 2.5-3 rpms and the egnine pouffs and pops like a missfire sounds like. Like I said tho I threw no codes at all. It has new spark plugs and a new fuel filter so I know those are good. weird it dose it some times but not all the time. right before the car started not allowing me to go over 3 grand I had a coule days where id be driving and the car would want to die and unless I gave it WOT and maintained a higher crusing speed it would jerk and putter like it wanted to die out and would die while driving some times.

Im buying a universal cat to weld in place of the old one. Just wondering if I drive the car after I cut the cat out to the place Im going to weld it at if the computer will go into "limp" mode because the o2 sensor in the cat will be gone temporarily wile I drive to the place. If so, Do I have to remove the code from the ecu to get the computer to go back to "regular" mode of reading that o2 sensor or will it automaticaly change back mode(if it even dose change modes in the first place) when I put the o2 sensor back in.....

ignore my last statement. I dropped the cat and "down pipe" from the car cut the cat in half and the inside "honey comb" had melted into a hard messy clog probley because the car came from california and or I was driving it home from california to florida msot the way 105 mph non stop for about 20 hours of the trip. thanks guys, Im going to reweld the cat without the internals I took out since theres no emissions law here and Im broke lol.

For future reference, you don't have to cut the cat itself in half. You don't even have to take the cat off. All you need is access to one side of it through the exhaust piping. Jam something hard into it and break it all up. Then start the vehicle and floor it. The gas pressure pushes out all the pieces of the cat.

Or if you want to do it the really good way, take the cat off, without cutting it in half, and just start chiseling away at the stuff inside from one of the ends of the cat. Both save you from having to reweld your cat back closed.

now you have to figure out what caused the cat to burn down . it's usually a bad injector. The cat burning down , 99% of the time , is a symptom not the cause. I'd start pulling plugs after it runs better to see if an injector is leaking
