Dan R

I attended 7th grade in the Los Angeles Unified School District. During that year you were required to take, wood shop, electric shop, metal shop (this was 1967). We actually had a foundry at our Jr High School (George K. Porter Jr High School). I made many a sand casting in metal shop, learned basic AC/DC circuits in electric shop and basic wood working skills in wood shop. Strange but no girls took the shop classes. Guys were allowed to take "home economics". I started my first auto shop class in the 9th grade (funny I can't remember what shop classes were given in the 8th grade). The 9th grade auto shop classes were the beginning of an auto shop class every semester until High School graduation. It was discovered I had a talent for auto repair and I was an auto mechanic until early retirement in 2005, then back to school to train as a Network Administrator (computer work). I credit these early shop classes in setting me on a path of many years of employment. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that shop classes are not so common in today's public schools.

Simply amazing! i had no idea the level of specialized heavy tools they utilized back then. It gives me a new respect for what went into cars from that era. I wish more were around today. I wonder if it was the problems with rust older cars had, or just people 'throwing their old cars away' that did so many in. From my experience with cars made from the 1960's on, which I've worked on, it's really more about people neglecting their cars than anything else. Unless a car gets into a bad wreck, there's no reason why most cars ever made shouldn't still be around to enjoy today. Cars made before 1970 certainly were better looking.
