Spoke to some people and it appears to be the Valve stem seals. I won't know for sure until I pull the piping and see if there is any oil from the turbo. But I suspect that it may be the seals or in the worst case, the guides. I guess 27+ dyno runs up to 8500RPM on the stock GSR head has taken it's toll...

Sounds like valve seals. The oil leaks down into the cylinders when the car is shut off and when the car restarts, there is your smoke.

the valve stem seals and guides aren't very expensive and not hard to replace. I just hated putting back on the springs well that was the case when i rebuilt my y8 head. understandably your's could be more expensive.

sorry 2 hear you are having so much trouble with your car.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

Ok..

I am gonna buy the oil and saw that they have 15w50 Mobil 1.

Should I use 15w50 or is it too heavy for my engine?? Should I stick with 10w30 Mobil 1?

Thanks.

Go ahead and use 15w50 Mobil 1. Talk to the person that build your motor too. I do that all the time.

How is your return line? My friends return line didn't have enough elevation drop and it would get backed up from time to time.

Bad valve stem seals would not show up on a leakdown test. The actual seals themselves run about $11-15 for the set.

I'll take a pic of the return line and see what you guys think..

I'll be using 15w-50 Mobil 1 and checking everything else tonight.

Maybe it is the return line too. Who knows?

Thanks everyone for all your help.

Default Good Advice

Most of what has already been said here is pretty good advice. I agree with a couple of the guys that you need to isolate what is causing the problem. A little leak by the valve stems is not a big deal and the engine may run fine for some time.

If it is a broken piston ring (will be detected by leak down and/or used oil analysis) it needs to be fixed.

If it is the turbo seals you will also want to fix those before running it too hard or permanant dmage to the turbo bearings will eventually occur.

I have used oil analysis kits in stock in Clearwater for $25.00. How this works is you take a sample (about 4oz. Jar included in kit) of the used oil (acquire during oil drain) and mail the jar (postage paid mailer tube also included) off to a lab in Cleveland. The lab does a spectroanalysis to determine wear and contamination. The results take about two weeks to get back but it will tell you if there is anything abnormal (like a broken ring, spun bearing) going on in your engine that is causing your extra oil consumption.

I checked everything out last night...

Return line was fine.

There was some oil residue in the tube from the turbo to the intercooler.

I put in the 15w50 Mobil 1 last night and let it idle for about 15min and then drove the car a few blocks. NO SMOKE.

Drove the car this morning for about 35miles NO SMOKE AT ALL!!! It looks like the 15w50 Mobil 1 was the answer. The car runs ALOT smoother, I can't believe the difference. I was also having problems with a rough idle - GONE. And at WOT I would have ALOT of black smoke, now there is barely any.

I am very happy that it only took $23 in oil to fix it. Thanks ALL!!
