Can someone explain why thicker oil would fix his problem? Why was the thinner oil getting past the rings?

The thicker oil did not "fix" a problem. No oil can "fix" a mechanical problem.

The thicker oil IS less prone to slip past rings and valve guides and therfore burn less and this probably what has helped QuickCivic.

This does not suggest that thicker is always better. Modern cars are designed to run on 30wt. oil and as such, you should run your car on the thinnest oil as recommended in the owner's manual.

Running on the thinnest oil possible will add a few HP and give you better gas mileage, but it will also reduce oil pressure a bit and should not be used for a street car with a "race" engine...

Also, JE pistons are known to burn oil when the engine is not running hard, due to the "relaxing" of the aluminum and when its running hard, the aluminum expands and seals more complete...

This may occur on other pistons but JE is notorious for this...

Well at least you have it isolated to when the engine is under vaccum, which could be valve seals or I guess the turbo seals, the fact that it is nopt burbing it at WOT is a good thing. I doubt it's a broken ring. But that is easy enough to test for.
