Turbo Car Burning Oil
Turbo Car Burning Oil
Alright here is what is going on...
Have a fairly new - (8000mile) built engine, turbo charged with a Garrett T3/T04E Turbocharger.
Since the engine and turbo were new I have been using 10w30 dino oil. The car would occasionally burn oil out of the blue when idling, maybe once a couple of days.
As you may know, turbo VTEC cars use oil. So when my car has been low on oil the past couple of weeks I have been adding Mobil 1 10w-30 to get it prepared for the switch to Synthetic and kind of wean the engine off of dino oil gradually. I have put about a quart and a half total by now.
Well now the damn thing will burn oil when cold in the morning. Once it gets to temp, it stops. When I get on it - it does not burn oil. When I am at a stop light it will burn oil every once in a while, not all the time - and it is quite a bit of smoke. Car runs fine and nothing seems to be wrong and it only burns oil at idle. Could my turbo seals be going bad? Any suggestions?
I am going to drain the oil and put in full Mobil 1 10w-30 and see what happens.
Thanks for your help....

Do not mix oils. It does weird things to the viscosity(sp).
Sounds like your valve stem seals could be gone. Nothing too harsh to worry about just check your oil levels weekly. You will need to replace those seals before this problem will go away.
This could've been caused by adding too much oil, or by running low on oil for too long.
This can also cause your turbo seals to have failed.

When the motor was rebuilt. Was the block bored .020 over or just a light hone? Burning oil on cold starts is a bit normal and stops when it reaches temp may be a cause of thermal expansion.Run a compression & leak down test to determine if there is any serious problem other than that just change the oil. Royal Purple is great but a bit expensive.

Cronic, thanks for the info. I check my oil levels every morning before I start it up. How hard is it to replace the valve stem seals? How much do the parts cost?
Spence, I will let you know if I need any help. Thanks for offering...

What about the intake pipes before the intercooler? Any signs of oil?
