let's say i can get an authentic jdm car imported into a port in canada. what would it take to get the car into the us an legally for street use? can it be done? also any one know any prices of different terms? like regestration, smog (in florida??) anything and all help will be greatly appreciated, thanks TR!!!!

 

I know you can title it in Alabama and then transfer to Florida with a $400 impact fee. I have a friend that has done it but I am not sure of specific details.

1) florida does not do emissions testing anymore

2) the main reason a specific car is not legal here is crash testing. the US is far more stringent than most other countries, so automakers have to design north american versions that meet US crash standards. i know that any company (i.e. motorex) that imports on a regular basis does pretty extensive modifications to make their vehicles crash-acceptable.

i do not, however, know the extent of these modifications (other than bumpers and side beams and whatnot) or how much they cost, or how much the state checks for when registering a vehicle.

why dont you call the DMV/DOT and ask them for registration advice/prices?

I called and my boy said no emisions in Alabama and they register them as a collectable, also it CAN NOT be financed. Must have a paid bill of sale with title from the point of sale, i.e. Canada or whatever. Then you must wait 30 days to transfer title to Florida and have a valid Fl. D.L. Impact fee is $400
