JUDGES NOTE:
When judging the conformation classes at APBC shows this is what I am looking for:
Since we have different styles of Pit Bulls/Bullys in the ring together, the dog is judged by the style he or she most resembles (ABKC, UKC, AKC or ADBA)
When judging, I judge 75% dog and 25% handler (handling). So work on handling and you will have a good start. A lot of times it comes down to that, as there are so many nice dogs.
Here are some things that I am looking for in the ring for conformation and what the faults are.
Disqualifications: Aggression and or Viciousness to people or another dog.
HANDLING: (Coming into the ring) The Handler should handle their dog on their left. When you come into the ring, keep your dog on your left. Do a light jog around to your spot. When you come around to your spot, stack your dog in front of you with his head facing to your right. Your dog should be facing the dog’s rear in front of you, keeping a respectful distance. Your dog should not be shy or aggressive when being checked. Gaiting your dog (see below) is also part of handling.
TOPLINE:
The Topline and Structure of the dog is being checked when your dog is stacked as described above. See below picture for a proper Topline and stack.
Faults: U Shaped arch, High Rear
BITE: A dog's bite is the way his teeth fit when his upper and lower jaws are closed. The standard is called a "scissors bite," in which the upper incisors just overlap and touch the lower incisors. A level bite is one in which the incisors meet edge to edge. A level bite is acceptable, but not ideal.
Faults: Overbite, Underbite
TAIL: When relaxed, the tail should not be between the legs or standing past the level of the backline.
Faults: Long tail, Kinked Tail, Bobbed tail, Broken Tail.
FEET: Feet should be arched, tight and straight.
Faults: Toes too spread apart. Feet facing East & West “Easty-Westy”
EYES: Eyes are set well apart and low on the skull.
Faults: Albino or Pink Eyes
GAITING: This is when I ask you to trot out from me in a straight line and come back. When trotting, the gait is effortless, smooth, powerful, and well coordinated, showing good reach in front and drive behind. The dog should be focused on where he/she is going. The tail is carried level with the backline. The tail may be carried in a raised, upright position, but never curled over the back.
Faults: Stopping, Legs not moving on the same plane
HINDQUARTERS: Should be strong & muscular. The rump is well filled in on each side of the tail. The bone, angulations, and musculature of the hindquarters are in balance with the forequarters. The thighs are well developed with thick, easily discerned muscles. Viewed from the side, the hock joint is well bent and the rear pasterns are well let down and perpendicular to the ground. Viewed from the rear, the rear pasterns are straight and parallel to one another.
Faults: Narrow hindquarters, hindquarters shallow from pelvis to crotch, lack of muscle, cow hocks, sickle hocks, bowed legs.
*Good Angulation facilitates a long stride. Balance facilitates good foot timing.
*Poor Angulation shortens stride because the bones meeting at the shoulder
joint and hip are steeply set, forming joints with wide angles.
A dog with good angulation and balance will have joints that flex easily and smoothly, providing strong thrust from the rear and spring and resilience in the front. Dogs with poor angulation must take shorter steps, and more of them, to get where they are going. Their action is bouncing rather than smooth. A dog that is straight, front and rear, has a short, stilted gait, but, if in balance, may be better off than a dog lacking balance, where one end has to compensate for the faultiness of the other.
