Default Anyone have/had similar problems?

I am looking into purchasing a 2G Eclipse GST. I took the car to a shop and had it checked out. There's a problem that worries me and I am kinda stuck on whether I want the car or not.

The timing belt was coverd with oil, it seems that something is leaking oil onto the timing belt, could be the oil pump, balance shaft? I don't know if this is something to worry about due to the notorious crank shaft walk.

Anyone?

Thanks

Could be alot of things.
If you are not comfortable with the car then dont buy it.
If i really liked the car and it was cheap enough to justify the oil on the T-belt then i would get it.
If you dont know your way around the motor real well then you probably want to pass on it.

don't buy a 2g that you are nervous about. i was nervous when i bought my '97 TSi, and it threw a check engine light on the way home from the dealership, and the motor threw a rod bearing within a month. I was really frustrated, but I swapped a 6 bolt engine into it and it has been great ever since.

if you can wait until january, I have an incredible '98 GST that will available. best looking 2g GST in tampa..perfect paint, meticulously maintained. The 7 bolt engine bit the dust (as they all do eventually), so I've got a 6 bolt engine that I'm swapping into it. The engine has only 10k on it and was built by a reputable DSMer (nouseforaname) with topline .020" over pistons. It will come w/ a 14b turbo, chrome 5 spoke wheels, goodyear eagle f1 tires and i'll be asking around $8000. given the condition of the car and the exceptional engine, this will make someone really happy.

Also, if requested, I can also build it to suit w/ ACT 2600 clutch, walbro fuel pump, and some other goodies i have laying around.

For 8k that GS-T would be a steal if you/when you do sell it in January. If I were to buy one, I'd wait to buy that or a GSX.

About the oil thing... I heard somewhere EVERY DSM leaks oil? Mine does (1g GS) Right on top of the alternater too. I'm just adding thicker oil so it doesn't leak out as fast, temp solution till I sell it.

No, every DSM does not leak oil. If you fixed it then it wouldnt leak anymore.

Watch this guys, this is one post where I actually give usefull information.

Was a timing belt done recently? If so I'm going to assume it was done with with the pulleys and tensioner replaced. If the bolts that hold the tensioner are not completely tight it will leak oil since one of those bolts goes through an oil passage. I had the same problem and didn't drive my galant for a while due to fear of the oil causing the belt to jump timing from oil all over it. Pulled the cover off, checked all the bolts and sure enough one of the tensioner bolts was not fully tight. Never had a problem with it after that.
