Default sunroof

has anyone ever had a problem with the sunroof leaking on a 2g, and fixed it? my sunroof leaks water when it rains, and i cant figure out whats wrong. the rubber stripping along the outside of the sunroof is fine, and where the two ends meet is fine too. ive searched on vfaqs, and it mentioned some runners or something to clean out with pipecleaners, but i dont know where those are, and ive looked all over the sunroof area.

also, my sunroof wont close all the way unless i hold the button down while i push up on the glass. if i dont push up on the glass it just stops moving.

I can help you, because this has happened to me. This helps if you have an air compressor, I tried the hanger through the tubes non-sense and that's what it is non-sense. Compressor air = fixed without doubts.

So you remove your headliner. You will see a tube on each corner, one that runs through your driver side A-pillar and one that runs through the passenger side A-pillar. There's two more, one runs through your driver side B-pillar and one runs through your passenger side B-pillar. Once you found those... you can't miss them they run off from the sunroof unit... next step...

You can release the hose clamps and try to remove the tubes off the piece that goes into it, once tubes are removed blow compressed air through them a few times till you hear clear air moving through your fender walls.

Be careful when removing the tubes you do not want to break them. I played it safe and just put a hose extension on the air gun to reach the holes from the top of the sunroof. This way I believe you don't have to remove your headliner but you may need to remove your sunroof glass.

It's up to you which way you want to do it. I removed the sunroof and the headliner to get everything cleaned up and cleared to make sure I had no more leaks.

As far as the sunroof not closing and you having to hold it, sounds like the motor is going on it. Has there's been any maintenance done to the sunroof like greasing the rails and what not? If not, it may be all dried up and could also be causing the problem. Still though it seems the motor might be going bad.

BTW, the reason you can't find the runners is because they are just holes. Two in which you can see when the sunroof is all the way open at the front of the sunroof on the ends. Those are the holes that you need to blow compressed air through or remove the headliner and get to them easier that way. The headliner is not difficult to remove. Just check what I said and you figure out a way you want to do it. Like I said I removed both sunroof glass and headliner.

so is the sunroof designed for water that gets in there to run out those runners and to the ground? and the runners are just gummed up or something, and the water just spills out into the interior?

Water does seem to pass through the seal on the sunroof glass they do tend to rust over the years. Once it does, if it collects a certain amount it starts to roll of into the nearest runner (hole/tube). If the runner is clear then it keeps running that way. Over time it tends to build up gunk and so fourth while you open and close your sunroof. Eventually it gets clogged or clogged enough to where the water can't flow consistently. If you open your sunroof you'll notice from the top and bottom that it seems to have a lip, a little high rise, to keep the water from coming in the car. Once those tubes are too clogged the water starts to go pass that, hence bringing water inside the car (headliner, seats, etc).

The only solution is clearing out those tubes. If you clear out those tubes completely (hearing tons of air coming out the wheel areas) you shouldn't have this problem continuing. If it continues then you have a rust build up between the seal on the glass somewhere. I replaced the glass and seal thinking that was it on the 2g I used to own and it ended up being the tube(s) were clogged.
