Hello. Recently bought a 97 Eclipse 2.0 non turbo. Its in decent shape just needs a few cosmetical repairs and maintance. Got a problem thats driving me crazy seems like something that should be easily fixed but I honestly have no idea what is going on or why. Here is the problem. When I bought it I was informed the tensioner pulley needed to be replaced which was causing problems with the p/s belt. No biggie. Got a new one straight from mitsubishi,got it installed- bought new belt ( also bought the alternator belt , figured Im going to be down there might as well get it replaced too). Got it installed everything fine and dandy. Later on that day the belt was split in two. From what I could see the belt seemed to slip from the bearings tracks and the grind of the bearing split the belt and basically the belt was done. My mechanic and myself we looked at the bearings and they all seemed to be fine and lined correctly. Thought that perhaps the belt was defective, got it replaced. And a day after I noticed it was starting to do the same thing ( belt sliping from the tracks ) but now it was also the alternator belt doing it too. So this is where I am at now. Car is parked and kinda wondering where to go with it as it hard to pin point the problem. The bearings are lined correctly, 2 belts have been installed, and have looked/research the interested for any similar threads and havent really found anything that shows rays of a solution to this. Any help or idea are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

 

Is the crank pulley in good shape? Also, is it an OEM or aftermarket. Pics would help. Also, you may wish to duplicate this post on 2GNT.com - home

my belts came off...maybe yours is broken in a different spot causing it to shred them. the wall holding the belt in place on mine was eaten away...maybe the tracks on yours are doing the same....

 

have similar problem on my gsx. the bracket for my p/s pump is bent causing the pulley to be out of line so it's tearing my belt. i didn't even notice it until i actually stepped back from the car. you could have a similar problem.

 

Well first off, thank you all for the quick responses...really appreciate that , glad to see that the site actually has people that log on and communicate and help out others. Thanks appreciate that. Also glad to see that Im not the only one with this problem hehehe. And apparently its basically the same thing you guys have mentioned. And when i researched the problem... harmonic balancer also was mentioned. so i think that might solve it. I will take some pictures tomorrow and post em on here. Need-where did ya buy urs and if possible how much ? I bought my tensioner straight from mitsu, a bit expensive( yes oem ) but figured its better in the long run. Again thanks.

 

i got mine at tire choice i think...im sure they went thru napa....about a $400 fix...or you can look in a junk yard 4 1...i recomend brand new....
