Default Tuning questions

Excuse my ignorance on this topic since I've never had to tune any of my cars.

I picked up Pipe's GSX and I need to get it tuned. If you don't know about it, it's a 2.3 stroker 6 bolt in a 97 with the factory ecu and harness to make it work.

What do shops do when they tune it? Do I need special equipment like an safc or are they programming my ecu? Sorry I'm lost here. Please clarify.

Buy dsmlink, and take it to darkside and be done with it. v3 lite is $375. darkside charged $275 for full dsmlink tune.

Thanks for your input. There has to be more to it than "just buy this product". I've seen a long list of things to choose from and I don't know why I'd pick one over the other.

I can tune DSMLink and 98/99 DSM Ecus...SAFCs too..I will hook you up too since no one knows me...lol...but ask "wishiwasfast" and "GNEn!st" .. I know what Im doin

DSMLink is the nice, easy, clean solution.

Evo/98/99 ECU will give you alot of options, as many if not more than DSMLink, but will cost half as much. On the other hand, its not as "plug and play" compatible and friendly as link.

SAFC had its place in time but now its just old hat...

Isn't there some type of restriction/limit you run into if you get the DSM/ECM Link V3 lite (like tunable up to 6500RPM or so)? I like how quick and easy DSM Link is to set up and the support forums are extremely helpful (it also help me figure out how to tune with the Evo ECU as well when I moved on). It's nice to give back to the community, but it seems like you may be able to get help/support locally, so it's up to you, good luck.

Just noticed one of my buddies has an Evo 8 Ecu for sale for $150, looks like it's still for sale over here on the west coast:

Injectors, Evo ECU, bolt-on filter, etc - Evo Empire Forum

One thing I remember with the DSM ECU and running DSM Link V2.5 is that the sample rates were faster than what the Evo ECU could log, but with everything the way it is now, i guess it doesn't really matter once you get the hang of it.

Let me google that for you

Check out a technical forum if you want to learn more - this site is not going to give you a good basis of knowledge.
