Before and After...a Refresh and Update Project on a '93 s13 Hatch
As a side note...the car feels good likely because it wasnt that great to begin with...so like most things, its relative.

Hey I probably missed it, but where did you get all your suspension bushings? I'm probably gonna start replacing all of mine soon. Any tips?
Phil -
Thanks sir. I'm making the trip on the 11th of June. The trip was a blast last time...but that was a ton of mods ago. Wheels, Brakes, 180sx (4.36) LSD, Header, Short Ram, Battery relocation, to name a few. One thing is for certain...the ride/feel of the car is much more aggerssive then last year. I could actually attack the dragons roads this trip as opposed to riding on it.
I'm currently running KYB AGXs up front and stock replacement z32 shocks on the rear. The springs are megan lowering springs. I like the spring rate of the front but the rear rate is way too soft. Saving up for coils, of course. Those will top off the suspension. But that install wont take place until after the motor is complete.
David-
I grabbed the bushings from Autozone, same price as most catalogs and free shipping...plus you can get them by the piece from the store.
Use map gas (propane is fine too) to burn out the bushing, its a little faster (hotter). Clean the arms thoroughly and freeze the bushings to press them in. Its kinda neat how much easier they are to put in when they are cold. i dont have a press so this did the trick for me.

The Starting issue...
I replaced the starter and that did NOT fix my problem. I then checked out the wiring diagram for the clutch safety switch and starter relay. As I checked this out I noticed how an anti-theft system that is on my car was wired in to the ignition. I never use it, but it some sort of early version of chip type key...only larger. Its like a removeable card that completes the circuit. Without that card-key installed th car wont start. It will run without that car-key, with a jump start though, as long as the key is turned to the on position. Its an odd quirk that I didnt think of because, like i said i never use it...didnt take the time to understand it until now. I redid those connections and removed and cleaned the card and since then the car has started perfect everytime. So I can only guess it was some sort of contact or connection issue. (long explanation but i know you'll appreciate that Phil...lol)

Ought to really scoot through the turns up there this trip.
I've been seriously thinking about taking the N/A Z up there just to get a "base" to go off of once the builds really get going.
I've never been a big fan of megan springs. BUT, what you could do to help firm up the rear is just get a pair of the agx's back there and set them more firm. That will keep the bounce from the spring under control, but still give you enough squat to really bite the tires down on the exit of the turn.
I have seen one set up that I thought was really neat. Seemed like the car handled well. The guy did agx's all the way around. Then took the megan springs and cut at least a whole coil out. Maybe a touch more. Then made a custom "perch" to keep the ride height where he wanted it. The shorter spring was more firm, but it wasn't at tight as the typical coilover.
I've always wanted to experiment with that kind of thing. I've considered doing it to the Z suspension once I piece together the pieces I'd need to make a spacer/perch. It would have to be something that I could take off easily, while I was experimenting with different heights/spring lengths. Then weld it in place when its all done.

I do appreciate the longer posts. lol
Thats really great that, that worked.
I wouldn't have ever thought of that either. Glad it ended up being something simple like that even though it cost you a new starter to figure it out.
Wasnt so bad...I installed a $25 starter I got from a seller here on TR and its worked flawlessly since. Now i have a spair...not terrible.
I do have a set of Coilover springs that I wanted to use for a custom Koni set up out back. But might just go with a Ground Control/Koni set-up because i'm having a hard time finding the perches seperately. Dont get me wrong, the Megans are "ok"...but they seem to soft for any sort of spirited driving. That and I think the bushing in the Z32 knuckles could use to be replaced at the shock mounting point.

Back From NC...
Just a quick up date...
First off, We had a blast in NC. The Dragon was awesome as usual and we were able to do some of the moonshiners 28 too. Though our first attempt was rained out we did managed to get back for another run soon after.
My first pix are of some damage the car, that occurred while driving thru Atlanta to NC, Maggie Valley. If I never get to drive thru that city again I will not lose any sleep. Some butthead dropped a floor mat or a mud flap in the highway...it was hit by another driver and it proceeded to slam into the bumper and driverside flip up cover....as you can see from the pix it was scuffed pretty good. Thankfully the damage was no where near as bad as it sounded. When it hit I thought there would be a big tear in the cover or a broken light, maybe worse. Luckily the damage was minimal.
I havent had a chance to wax it to see if the scuff will buff out all the way...but I'll post up the pix of the end results when I do. It did leave a decent sized rubber scuff on the nose though.
Not a good start, but that was the biggest issue I had with the car on the way to an from and in all the driving we did while in NC. Aside for a phantom dissapearence of my clutch master cylinder fluid...I hads no there issues. (filled the fluid and checked for leaks...none found - puzzling)
And, since this is a build thread I figured I would post up the pix of the flange that arrived in the mail while I was vacationing in the NC. This is the beginnings for the custom intake manifold for the superchargers intake/inter-cooler set up.
More to follow...
Thanks for looking,
-Royce
